This is a story about a boy, a boy and a promise he made. The boy, Bruce Wayne, son of Thomas and Martha Wayne, a very wealthy family who live on the outskirts of Gotham City.
Thomas was a very successful doctor, and at one time the family had a very happy life together. Until one night all that changed, and Bruce lost his childhood, earlier than anyone should, and in a way no one ever should.
On that fateful night the Waynes were leaving a movie theater after seeing, The Mark of Zorro, they started walking down the alley on there way to where their butler, Alfred Pennyworth, was to pick them up, but Thomas and Martha would never make it to their limo, and in a way neither did little Bruce.
From the shadows stepped a dark figure, masked in the gloom of the alley-way, he pulled a gun demanding Thomas' wallet, he quickly turned his attention to Martha's pearls. Thomas leapt in front of the gunman to stop him from harming his wife, two shots rang out, in a flash Bruce's parents were dead, and Bruce was transformed. His cold stare pierced the souless gunman, he lowered his gun that was now fixed on Bruce, and ran off into the night.
Bruce fell to his knees and held onto his parents' hands, that were now turning cold, as death pulled them from their loving Son. Soon the police arrived and took care of Bruce, he was no longer little Bruce Wayne, son to Thomas and Martha Wayne, he was Bruce Wayne heir to a fortune, and much, much, more. One officer at the scene when looking upon Bruce could've sworn his eyes were like two ghostly white slits staring out from the darkness, it gave him a chill and he had to look away from the small boy.
The night after his parents' funeral, Bruce snuck into the cemetary, he knelt by their graves and swore into the night, 'Mother, Father, I vow to you, I shall protect the innocent,so that none will be lost as you were, No other shall know the loss and pain I feel!' As if in answer lightning flashed behind Bruce, and the long shadows of the graves grew around Bruce, then dissappeared.
After that night Bruce took it upon himself to begin his training, he took up studies no other eight year old would take interest in, or comprehend. He was always a genious, always had the best of grades, his great mind would one day be considered one of his greatest assets, more-so than any tool in his arsenal of fear, and fear would play a big part in what he had planned.
One night after returning from years of training abroad, a twenty five year old Bruce Wayne sat in his study in his home, Wayne Manor, he thought of how criminals were a supersticious and, cowardly lot, he would need a symbol, something to aid him in his battle against all the scum, all the evildoers of the night, and he would meet them there in their element, and make it his own. He was determined to clean up his city, and make sure that what happened to him would not happen to another innocent person.
Then flying through the open window, a black shadow swooped down and over Bruce's head, he exclaimed, 'A Bat! That's it, I shall become a Bat!!!'
Now, standing atop the towering gothic buildings of his city, he watches, and protects, a gargoyle come to life, an avenging angel, the boy keeping his promise, fully grown into...The Bat-Man!
I know we all know the story, but I just felt like writing it, like how you'll see the legend revisited now and again in the Comic Books.
