This bouncing baby droid has already endeared itself to the Star Wars faithful with just a few bleeps and squawks of droidspeak. Its exact role in the plot can’t be determined, but it likely serves a similar role to R2—the sweet, childlike, non-threatening David that plays a small but critical role in facing down an intergalactic Goliath. Abrams may have named his company Bad Robot, but this is clearly a nice one.

The robotic toy company Sphero, which Iger himself mentored, announced it is partnering with Disney on a "Star Wars"-themed toy. (Details weren't revealed.)

theres 3 or 4 guys already in the process of building the soccer droid as we call him lol there is quite a few great ideas on how to make him work, i would be surprised in 3 months if we see real good replicas rolling around, once is being 3d printed as we speak

They never cease to amaze me with what they’re able to come up with, you know? I said, “How are you ever gonna top R2-D2, the most adorable droid in movie history?” And then they have this new one. I can’t even tell you his name, but you saw it in the trailer. [Editor’s note: the name of the droid has been revealed as BB-8.] And when they were demonstrating how they did this thing, live on set — because it’s not CGI, that’s a live prop — I was just amazed. They let me play around with it. [Laughs] I was running it all around at the creature shop up in Pinewood. I’m telling you, it’s an absolute delight. And not having thought that I’d ever go back there, to go back into that world, is just – I get the chills. It’s just so much fun.

it could be two pieces and the top part is magnectically attached or something using a sort of WIFI to be two parts.

The guys on the replica forum got word the lower ball is between 18-20"

So if that's true this driod will be skittle over 2ft talll

Makes me like that little droid even more than I already did!

It's also hilarious because I saw a lot of complaints saying stuff like..
"A droid like that wouldn't even work/work in that type of environment"

I took my daughter to the set, and she met BB-8, the droid you see in the trailer. She sat with him for ages, and just talked to him. The guys were operating it, just off camera, and she was there. I said, “Come on, we’ve gotta go,” and she said, “I just want to spend some more time with him and have another hug.” It’s just a ball with a thing on it, but it’s a testament to that character, how much he’s going to impact on audiences because he’s so full of life.
