The Dark Knight BD Live Chat with Christopher Nolan

I've graduated with a degree in video and motion graphics, and most of my schooling was editing non-linearly, and I don't even know the answer to that question.

Most likely film is digitized, effects shots are sent out to studios, effects shots come back in, edited together with the rest of digitized film, everything reprinted onto film.

That's nothing more than a guess.

Nolan mentioned the fact that Two-Face was not in any IMAX scenes because of the CGI being rendered at a lower resolution than IMAX film. Well I would say Transformers 2 is screwed then, unless they have magically been able to build some supercomputers over night to handle the rendering of the robots for IMAX resolution. Bay's going to shoot IMAX scenes of people and then slap much lower resolution CGI robots on top of the fim. What a wonderful idea. LOL, total abomination (as expected from that dip****).
I pointed that out the second it was announced. :o

Instead of it helping the film's artistic scope, it'll simply be a marketing gimmick that adds nothing to the visuals.

Also, I got the feeling some people were writing certain questions with added tech specs to make themselves appear more intelligent, though most of the specific questions were pertinent. Him being a big fan of Year One and TLH was not at all surprising, though he did not mention TDKR, which many would have expected... and it was nice of him to add that while he enjoys the comic medium, he would never call himself a "fan" because he does not understand the history or could not speak about the past in any detail. He seemed to be into the event enough that he was not totally phoning in the answers... though I am certain it was not the most riveting thing he has done recently.

Yeah, right now Nolan is the ideal action director to use the IMAX format because he's old school and tries to stay away from CGI. In order to get the most out of IMAX, you need to actually use the cameras to film your sequences, not slap some lower resolution digital effects on top of what was filmed.

It was interesting, despite some of the questions being some of the most inane things ever conceived. I would LOVE to have been on Nolan's end with his screeners and see some of the dribble that was not selected, although I'm sure a lot of good questions were passed up.

I realized that I didn't have many questions, and those that I did have were already asked and answered either through the chat or the extras. So I started asking some unrelated questions, especially in light of what was actually being posted.

The ones I remember asking were:

1. What's your favorite Radiohead song and album?

2. Was Rory ultimately disappointed that this film wasn't about his first kiss?

3. I want to paint two adjacent walls of my bedroom bright red. The bedroom is 10 x 12, and the walls are 8 feet high. One gallon of paint will cover 400 square feet. The paint is sold in quarts, too. But I want to buy as little paint as possible. So, what’s the least amount of paint I can buy and still finish the job? One quart, two quarts, three quarts or one gallon?

4. What sort of mileage does the Tumbler and the Batpod get?

^^ Agreed.

About no mention of Bruce's parents in TDK: Not relevant to his driving force in this one as opposed to "Batman Begins". He is more influenced by tragedy here. (I think I paraphrased that right)

that was the question i asked and i respectfully disagree with his response.

i asked him why he didn't answer the '5 dead' question but it never went through. i tried probably 100 times haha

I did RSVP

That annoys me too. I had the choice of the PS3 or the blu-ray player. I thought for an extra hundred dollars I'd get the PS3 so I could get the live chat and maybe play a few games. Now I've missed the chat. Thankfully by the sounds of it this live chat is not that great. At least I can play Drakes' Fortune now.

PS3 worked Perfectly fine for me!

Thanks to everyone who recorded anything on these message boards. Saved me a lot of trouble.

I have a creative screenwriting magazine article in which Nolan uses the 'F' word numerous times. Gentleman? I think not.

Is it the one where he and Jonah discuss the screenplay for The Prestige?

Nolan: When you run voiceover and you have this huge ****ing exploding machine and Michael Caine talking quietly, It's a real puzzle that takes forever to put together...

he only used an f-bomb once but also used the word ******* earlier on in the interview.

I don't think that will be the case.

It's been close to a year and a half-two years now since TDK was filmed. Technology moves at a rapid pace. Industrial Light & Magic is one of the main companies working on the animation for the film and it wouldn't surprise me at all if they've already come up with the ability to do the animation at IMAX resolution. As anal as Bay is about eye candy type stuff, I can't see him being happy with a robot of sub-par quality on an IMAX screen.

Alot of people give Bay alot of hell for his "inability" to direct, but I've always enjoyed his movies. They are popcorn movies, and nothing more. If you're expecting an Oscar caliber film from him then that's your fault. If not for him demanding close to perfection w/animation in the first Transformers film then it would have been a total bust. People can say what they want to, but the animation of those robots definetley set the precident for future live action/CGI films.

LOL @ people complaining about the Live Chat. What did you expect? Nolan is a prima donna about his films, how they are made, his thought process, etc. He's not very open at all about any of these things. He gives open ended vague answers to such questions and you can tell he'd rather reveal nothing. We clearly know he's not going to reveal anything about Batman 3. Combine this with the typical fanboy response in these events, a wedding proposal? are you for real?, and its expected that it would be pretty lacking in substance.

"So, who are the five people who Two-Face killed?"

"I'll answer that one day, but not today."

HAHAHA!!!

It sounds like Nolan just stuck his hand inside a hat, and instead of pulling out a rabbit, he pulled out a card that said "Five dead"...And went with it.

Hmmm...Didn't Thom Yorke write a song using that same "technique" ? :hehe:

Oh my.... i am away for a day and all this pages appear! How am i supposed to read all this? I'll try...

So is there a video of the session out there?

What you have to realize is that 2008 movies such as Iron Man feature special effects at a lower resolution than regular 35mm. That's right, never mind IMAX. CGI rendering isn't even done at regular film resolution. IMAX is off the charts compared to regular film. Do you honestly think the technology has changed that rapidly in such a short time? Not a chance in hell. IMAX is 18k. That is nuts. There's no way they'll be able to do it, but most people won't give two ****s. Most people don't even notice the difference in clarity between 35mm blown up on an IMAX screen and actual IMAX content.

CGI at IMAX resolution is years away and hundreds of millions of dollars, if not billions, from becoming a reality.

Q: Did the Batmobile really need to be destroyed?
A: We intended to do so in Batman Begins but fell in love with the vehicle and could not bring ourselves to do it. This time we were determined to follow through on our threat.
I hate it when they destroy the vehicle in every film and bring a new one in the next. It screams "toy sales". Why would he get his car destroyed in only his first week as batman? Jesus Christ i hate that logic.

I hope they give him a new car in the next one, one which isnt too different from the tumbler.

Q: Do you think Batman is responsible for Harvey Two-Face's death?
A: I feel that Dent's fall from grace is complete - he has doomed himself. Batman's physical actions at the end are necessary to save the child. I think that dent's fate stems from his own psyche.
LAME
Who exactly are the five people, including the two cops?
I will answer this question one day. But not today.
Did someone really ask something as stupid and ridiculous as this? Does anyone really lose sleep over this? Well, at least that will teach Nolan to be more careful in the third film, just like he was in Begins. Everything was tidier in BB.

PS: About Bay and IMAX. Dont cry Bay, you ve been upstaged in action films. Dont cry!
Pathetic attempt to shoot in IMAX when it will just be normal film blown to a bigger screen. Pathetic!
