Being... British?

I think they made it law that everything in Wales has to be equally available in Welsh and English (roadsigns, etc). I've never heard of any Scottish person speaking or reading Gaelic in this century, however.

My firm has a sister group in Wales and when they answer the phone it makes my ****ing head spin. They say their greeting in both Welsh and English, all mixed together at the same time, to the point that I don't even understand the English.

That reminds me of the time I accidentally watched a South African soap opera. I got very confused since I could understand half the words, but their sentences were all mixed up with Africaan or something.

I thought Welsh people only really spoke Welsh in the company of an Englishman.

Yeh, normally to piss you off.

We dun wun thim to knu wut we'are sayeng, boy-O.

Big brother 10 starts soon. Eggyman (my son) will set his sky planner.

Most languages native to the British Isles with the exception of Welsh and English are all but extinct, as the amount of people who speak them fluently is so small it is negligible.
That is sad when languages become extinct. Were there many other languages spoken in the Britain before English became the most common language?

Welsh is still taught in welsh schools. 20% of all pupils in Wales being are taught welsh.

1) Welsh has less words than english so isn't as expressive.

2) being a language spoken by a minority and even in Wales their are alot of people who don't speak the language its usage is not as prevalent as english which is the first language of britain. Welsh as a first language is largely concentrated in the less urban areas.

3)Even if you live in Wales and speak welsh you would still need to speak english if you wanted a job or anything so welsh usely ends up being a secoundary language although all public things are written in english and welsh.

I'm not sure if Colonizers had a mandate to spread the english language
Only 20%? That's a very small percentage, imo. The usage of the language may not be prevalent but still... it's part of Welsh's heritage that I think should be preserved. Even if it's not used commonly, it can be used as a second language at home.

Thanks for the link. I didn't realize the language is spoken by some in Argentina. Wow! Pardon my ignorance but is Welsh and Gaelic the same?

I recently to a trip to Scotland and Ireland. Good times.

How to say hello

In Irish Gaelic, it is Dia dhuit.
In Scottish Gaelic, it is Madinn mhath, or hallo.
How do you pronounce those words and does it use the same alphabets as the English language?

I need to learn to speak American.

Why? You'd get more chicks in America by speaking English. We love your accent.

I already have an American wife - yep the accent does work.

Hello - In Irish Dia dhuit (DEE-a GHWIT) [literal meaning is 'God be with you']

Lex, I am sooo not your son. That's like saying Luke Skywalker's brother was Greedo. But comPLETEly different.

Indeed it was a joke.

The apple would have fallen very far from the tree if it were true. Pitty you have potential.

Eggyman your real life persona.... what is that like? What are your hopes if any? Plans for the future?

England still has the best greeting known to man.

"OIOI!!" Followed by a swift headbutt.
The Old Glasgow Kiss

Plus Greedo can't shoot straight to save his life.

I think Big Brother has run its course they should cancel it.

Your right
Welsh and English has equal status in Wales so most stuff is in welsh and english.

To be honest throughout Britains history there have been too many languages (and yes I mean languages not dialects) it's hard to keep track. I mean even Anglo-Saxon (the proper name for Old English) is a separate (dead) language. In truth if it was up to me I would have everyone speaking Esperanto.

i like the principle of esperanto but not the formulation of it.

Was Cornish an actual language, or just a variation of English?

Any Latin influence on your languages, Brits? Britain was conquered by the Ancient Romans...

I think Cornish is an actual language.

Latin was spoken by the elite back in the day. Alot of latin crept into the language.
Its still taught in some schools in britain most of them private. a lot of the older schools have mottos in latin as mine did.

^^ I see...

By the way, how come UK doesn't use the Euro as currency when you're part of the EU?

because we figured the pound would stay stronger than the euro. it's always an issue with how much of a part of europe we actually are with us being an island.

oh and we also have latin influence via french which was used in the royal courts.

Because most british people are anti EU because they don't really understand what the EU is/does outside of the scare story headlines newspapers print.

Also we like being able to control our own currency somewhat which we wouldn't be able to do with the euro.

Oh and since chamber brought up newspapers I thought I'd mention, The Sun is filth, The Mail seems to be run by the BNP (all wankers IMO) and The Guardians Pro-Tory agenda is so in your face it isolates anyone who wasn't born into wealth and power.

Yeah I don't like newspapers, the sad thing is that I just love Andy Capp. :(

You only like Andy Capp because he represents all you stand for, with the alcohol, domestic chaos and pure laziness :o
