How come no one else has picked Smaug vs the dwarves? I thought it was better than the Barrel chase.

I was just about to post this, this is one of the best scenes of the year for me it was amazing, loved the barrel chase but the Smaug sequence is just on another level. My nominations are now:

Hong Kong Sequence (Pacific Rim)
Yukio and Wolverine vs Shingen (The Wolverine)
Smaug sequence (The Hobbit: DOS)

Honourable mentions to the Smallville and Zod fights in MOS, the opening of Gravity, the finale of Elysium and the finale of Kick Ass 2.

i was blown away by most of the Arena section in Catching Fire (God love you, IMAX cameras) but it is difficult to single out one bit of action as a year-end highlight. lots of great stuff, though.

Fast & Furious 6 has some really great action scenes throughout, but the never-ending plane runway scene was the cherry on-top of a ridiculous sundae. It was hilarious, but still entertaining.
