what do you think are some of the best and worst? Not necessarily the movie score soundtracks but like the ones that have songs done by musicians and usually have nothing to do with the movie.

The soundtrack for Batman could go either way for me, depending on how I'm feeling at a specific moment.

I liked the Freddy vs. Jason soundtrack, but that music is definitely not for everyone.

The Mortal Kombat soundtracks are very good, (even Annihilation) akin to the Matrix, as are any of the Crow soundtracks (minus the 4th movie, haven't heard that one).

I say these three franchises have the best for that type of music--techno, DJ, alternative rock

Best: To Kill A Mockingbird, The Big Chill, Mr. Holland's Opus

Mr. Holland's Opus was definitely a good one along with Forest Gump and a heap of other films based in that era.

Fight Club has a great soundtrack. Mainly by the Dust Brothers plus one Pixies song.

Oh Brother Where Art Thou has a fantastic soundtrack.

Another great one: Goodfellas

And the Devil's Rejects is maybe my favorite. It's all classic rock/country.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly has a kick arse OST.

Empire Strikes Back (I chose this over the first one because of the Empiral March Theme)

The Godfather

Army of Darkness (Surprisingly good!)

To Kill a Mockingbird (very touching)

Braveheart

Lord of the Rings

Fight Club

My favorite score in terms of original instrumental pieces is a tie between Aliens and Tim Burton's two Batman flicks. Both capture the films' feel quite well.

The best soundtrack for me in terms of contemporary pop music is by far Almost Famous. Zeppelin, Simon & Garfunkel The Who, The Beach Boys, Joni Mithcell, Sabbath, Elton John and so many other great bands all on one soundtrack. Too bad the cd didn't even manage to include half of the songs. Fast Times At Ridgemont High also had some great tunes.

(As you can see, I'm a huge Cameron Crowe fan).

As for worst, pretty much any teen comedy today has a pitiful soundtrack.

Favourite soundtracks are - Matrix Trilogy, Daredevil, Elektra, The Punisher, It's All Gone Pete Tong, The Hunger, Ghost Dog, The Return of the King, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Amadeus, 1969, Go, Highschool High, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Swordfish, Rock and Roll Highschool, Attack of the Clones

Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, but no Kill Bill?

Best Films scores:
Anything By John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith and Alan Silvestri

Best Soundtracks: I will say that Most soundtracks got bad towards the end of the 90's. But to List Some that I like:

Highlander
Some Songs off Interview with the Vampire
Batman
Satuday Night Fever

The Worst: Not a huge Hans Zimmer fan.
Batman Begins
X2 score
Fantastic 4
Pirates of the Carribbean

I'd like to pound him with my fists. I hate his work and my room mate is a movie score freak and gets the magazine and I read interviews with him and I hate him as a person also. Makes me sick.

But this isn't scores, it's soundtracks with songs, so...

Best

The Devil's Rejects
Goodfellas
Casino
Dawn of the Dead (original)
Predator 2
Very Bad Things
Frequency
Velvet Goldmine
Flash Gordon
Almost Famous

Worst

Goodfellas has a kickass soundtrack.

Suspiria has an amazing soundtrack

ones that aren't just scores but actual bands that i remember liking are
singles
repo man
the crow

can't really think of any more but i'm sure there's lots

I dig pretty much anything by Danny Elfman. I think him a genius, really. My favorites are: Edward Scissorhands, BeetleJuice, Darkman, The Nightmare Before Christmas (in which he also sings for Jack Skellington), and the themes to Spider-man, Nightbreed, and Batman/Batman Returns.

I don't care for any "soundtrack" that is nothing but random songs by various artists--especially when they have absolutely nothing to do with the movie. If the songs are in the movie and/or vital to the movie, I get it. Otherwise it just seems like too much of a stretch.

the big lebowksi, thomas crown affair and meet joe black.

the kill bill ones are a lil overrated...

mask of the phantasm goes without saying.

requiem for a dream should also have a decent one once i get my hands on it.

I see your point, but don't you find him typecast? Most of those examples feature little differentiation.

This was proven to be a problem when Raimi asked him to do something "a little less Danny Elfman" for Spidey2. That, I believe is what caused the friction between the two, and why Elfman won't do Spidey3. This was also a criticism during a few Spidey1 reviews, as they said he had no distinct theme a la Supes or Bats.

I'd go with Williams anyday. I also love the Romeo+Juliet Soundtrack, that totally gets what the film is about.

i can't believe i forgot the top gun album, what an idiot i am...

i love all those songs...

Donnie Darko has a pretty damn good soundtrack too.

Best OST
The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
The Long Good Friday
The Usual Suspects
Fight Club
White Heat
Sleepy Hollow

others:
O Brother where art thou?
Casino (The music is almost non-stop)
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Snatch
Layer Cake

Dirty Harry and Get Carter both have a great (very 70's) soundtrack. Especially the latter. A true example of ''less is more.''
