Five noms a piece, shoot.

(boring and obvious picks)

Alan Moore

Will Eisner

Neil Gaiman

Stan Lee

Frank Miller

very honorable mentions:

Kurt Busiek

Warren Ellis

Grant Morrison

Gardner Fox

Chris Claremont

i would rather this be a top 10, no order

Since that first response covered most of the obvious ones I'm gonna give a shout-out to Denny O'Neil. I mean a man invents Ra's Al Ghul and beats Jason Todd to death with the crowbar of Democracy, that is a mother****er who has earned his due.

Warren Ellis
Mark Waid
Grant Morrison
Kurt Busiek
Brian K. Vaughan (I have never enjoyed comics more than his. Y and Runaways are truely underrated masterpieces)

Ed Brubaker
Garth Ennis
Neil Gaiman
Alan Moore
Paul Dini

damn theres more.... 5 is not enough

Grant Morrison
Mark Waid
Greg Rucka
Peter David
Oh what the hell. Joss Whedon.

Cos I'm not the most in-depth comic fan in the world, a lot of these are just for a single, awesome pice of work.

Alan Moore - For lots of stuff, including Watchmen (which I don't enjoy reading as much as some others, but I have to respect the attention to detail)

Kurt Busiek - For Marvels (just cos of how all the pictures in it are from real comics, and the way it all fits together, quite astounding)

Mark Millar - For The Ultimates (I've never enjoyed six issues of a comic book more than the first 6 of this, and the next 3 arcs rocked pretty harshly too)

Garth Ennis - For the genre defying epic that is Preacher

Frank Miller - For Sin City (man, I wish I could be in one of those films, just to say some of that hard-boiled dialogue)

Not the most adventurous picks, but whatever, I enjoy and respect their work more than any others.

Really:huh: Not being a dick or anything I just want to know which of his stories are your favorites?

Grant Morrison
Alan Moore
Neil Gaiman
Warren Ellis
Ed Brubaker

i really wanted to include Denny O'Neil on my list- much respect for him.

and i completely forgot about Brian K. Vaughan.

but honestly, how could one single out just 5?

Other than the obvious choices, I have to say Vaughan. He hasn't written a comic I didn't like.

I also want to say Jack Kirby, but he was known more for his art than his written work.

Oops just saw the 5 criteria

Slott
Stan Lee
Geoff Johns
Chris Claremont
Grant Morrison

In random order:
Neil Gaiman
Alan Moore
Grant Morrison
Darwyn Cooke
Kurt Busiek/Mark Waid get halfsies.

Alan Moore
Neil Gaiman
Frank Miller
Mark Waid
Garth Ennis

Alan Moore will win, so close the thread.
