Yeah, they grew up...now. But think about the OT and how old kids that went crazy for it were back then... i would say a lot younger than 18 in most cases. Of course, the OT resonated with adults aswell (and that's part of why it got so big), but it was mainly for a younger generation.
Really, my dad stood in line for Episode 4 and told me it was mostly teenagers to 30 year olds in line. The action figures that came out after that Christmas is what brought kids to love it.
I grew up liking Star Wars for the action and special effects but eventually I realized there was more depth than blue and red swords. The reason the franchise carries on with you is because it has more meaning than its face value.
