Great post, and fully sums up my feelings about the whole 3rd act, that scene shows that evil cannot corrupt Superman, and it finally gives us the REAL Lex Luthor thats been hiding underneath the surface of the one we got for the 1st half of the movie. This Lex is altogther more bitter and viscious, and he takes obvious delight in the beating of Superman.

But then Superman comes back, in a way only Superman can, showing us his will and determination are his best super-powers..

All great scene's, and your first paragraph is pretty dead on about the type of Superman Singer gave us. I describe this Superman as a human god, because while he has the powers and abilities of a god, he is relatably human.

I dont see why he would, you can see by his face when flying over it how disgusted and pissed off he is at this corruption of his home-world, at that point he wanted nothing but to find the culprit.

Agreed, Aveit. I like this human god as you say. A totally perfect Superman is boring and dull, plus he is Not Jesus. He made a few mistakes, but he seemed to have learned from them by the end of the film. And that's what is all about. Plus, even when he felt the worst (he hears that Lois doesn't love him anymore, and after the beatdown), he still performes his duty of protecting and saving the world. Unlike Spidey...:cwink:

I'm surprised no one mentioned this scene, but my favorite scene is Superman vs. The Bank Robber. Just as the robber gets ready to gun down the two security guards, Superman flies in front of the bullets and walks towards the the robber as the bullets are bouncing off his chest. That always really pumps me up even though we all seen bullets bounce off Superman before. Then when the robber runs out of ammo in his machine gun, he pulls out a pistol and fires it in Superman's eye and the bullet crumples up and falls to the ground.

My second favorite scene is Superman and the airplane.

That scene you mention with the bank robbers is the sort of feeling the rest of the film needed to have.

I watched this the other day i must say the shuttle save was the most impressive scene, just the way he carried it on his shoulders and flew it off...

as for dialogue, when supes talked about how people were crying out for a saviour, i think that's probably some of the best dialogue given in a superhero film ever...

Agreed all parts of the film that uphold the idea and feel of who Superman is, if anything all I remember about that film are the good parts.

I do have to say it drags where lois gets on the boat and lex is revealing his plot and the boy shows his strength etc....

The biggest drag was the ending. After the fall to Earth, the hospital scene and the talk with his son was a very slow drawn out process.

Oh, I agree, I also freakin love that scene. It's soo Superman, and it reminds me of the Fleischer cartoons somehow. But I still think that there are other scenes in SR that are more compelling. :yay:

Agreed. It's such a compelling and deep scene. Superman shares his burden with the woman he so loves, since he can hear everything, and that being Superman is not as easy as she might think. Love it, especially the delivery and sincerity by Routh. Singer elevated Superman to the Alex Ross level with this scene, IMO.

Had to watch it again as I have been talking about it for a while.

Any scene with Jimmy in it was great, I really forgot how much this actor pulled the role off. It's a small part and kinda easy if you ask me. Play a nerdy loser.....but he did it well.

I agree. In the scene with Lois - without didactic scenes or long monologues - I got the deep true feeling of what Superman feels sometimes. At the same time helpful but alone. I think there was a 1986 Superman tv special (with Dana Carvey) where some old actor talked about the same. Superman being both powerful but lonely. Great scene.

Superman has that big issue there. He is always alone and so very different. That is one thing he does feel but I always saw Superman as being excepted into the human race so much that he starts to feel less lonley. At least I hope the next version of Superman on screen will have more confidence and less teenage angst.

I totally agree. I used to hate Jimmy's character and was against the traditional Jimmy in this movie, with that stupid tie and everything. But Huntington got it perfectly; convincing, natural and specially not annoying.

Best Jimmy ever for me.

Yes.... in fact the recent encarnations of Jimmy like in SR and Smallville have been some of the better cast characters to date in my humble opinion.

Well, there's more than to be accepted in order to not feel lonely. You can be accepted in a 100 people group but not having one true friend amongst them. No one special with whom truly share your thoughts and feelings (romantic way or not).

I think that is what that scene was all about. Hundred of people call for Superman when they're in need. But how many of them calls Superman to say thanks, to give him some support or a nice talk or dinner? Little to none.

Superman is highly accepted amongst humans. He's truly loved but most people actually love him because of what he does and represents. They don't have a direct touch with the persona behind the symbol.

Plus, how should Superman feel, when he realizes that Lois Lane claims to be in love with the man, but she has him close to her every day and she can't notice.

That's how Superman can find a smile for him in every people but still his true self being unknown for most of humans.

At least I hope the next version of Superman on screen will have more confidence and less teenage angst.

I didn't know that loneliness and impossible love were issues exclusively attached to tennagers?

I didn't see insecurity in Superman, I saw he was regretful for having gone so many years.

Not really true millions of people over the world would sell their soul to meet Superman and really get to know the guy for all the right reasons. I see that seen as the people of Earth asking for help and getting it. If Superman could hang around for five seconds after the event takes place he may hear a thank you. Better yet I bet the people do say thank you as he leaves and he can still hear it. He can hear every good and bad thing said about him and I bet the good out weighs the bad.

Yes many adults have those issues too....loneliness and impossible love

Insecurity maybe not but he hesitates too much.

Well, there you are. That's why Superman feels lonely in spite of everything. When he's not pretending to be someone else, he has to go too soon to link him with someone else for more than 5 seconds. It is part of his "work" but nevertheless it isolates him emotionally.

Hearing them is not to relationate yourself with them in an important way that gets people into who you are and not merely a saviour-saved relationship.

I think he hesitates because the situation is truly complicated. He loves Lois but he knows she would have to opt for leaving Richard and take Jason away from him.

Teenage angst? I don't know how old you are, but I am an adult and still have emotional issues to overcome once in a while. We never stop learning. And if anything, SR had a very adult treatment all over it. There was no whining by Superman at all, that's Spidey movies's job. :cwink:

Also, no matter how close Superman may be to humans, his amazing powers will always keep him above and apart from us in many ways, hence why he is called The Last Son of Krypton. This is an essential part of the drama of the character, that also makes him interesting, compelling, and utterly fascinating, IMO. Yeah, his powers are awesome, but his mind and soul are much more interesting to me. That's why I love Jason. He becomes a link between Superman and humanity, which brings depth to the character, if written well that is.

Now there you have some teen romantic comedy. Maguire's crying face provides the comedic bit. :yay:

I agree with this. Jason felt to me as a natural step in Superman's life. Much more than a stable marriage or normal romantic relationship.

Yes. IMO, Jason, if written, well has more potential and can be much more interesting to explore as a character to add to the mythos and legend of Supes than even Lois. I also find it extremely compelling how Jason links Superman and Lois forever, even if they couldn't find the way to be together as a normal couple. It's epic storytelling, IMO.

My teen angst comment was perhaps a little harsh ;)

You see I thought Lois was supposed to be the connection to humans...at least it should be.

I like that "You wrote that the world doesn't need a savior, but everyday I hear people crying for one." line as well. It show you one part why Superman start going everywhere around the world after he flew out of Earth & was listening to many things before he flew back in. That really describe Superman & how helpful his powers can be with that brilliant lines.

That was a great build up to some good heroic work, the house on fire being blown out in a second and the bank robbers etc.
