It seems that this year the battle for the best movie score is between Michael Giacchino's UP and James Horner's Avatar.

I'm a man who listens ONLY movie scores, and they are my music. My opinion is that Horner's score is absolute brilliance! Up was good, but not that mutch.

For you what is the better? (we talk only score not movie).

I agree with you, dude. While Up's score was actually mreally good, I don't see how anything but Avatar's score could win. Horner's score was absolutely beautiful and powerful. He did an amazing job with Titanic, but it seems as if he built on that and created an even better score.

I don't even remember Avatar's score.

UP for the win.

Avatar's score was entirely forgettable. I'm obsessed with film scores. But I barely noticed Avatar's. It had no central theme that gave it inner strength and weight. It was just a tool used to enhance individual scenes. It was effective, but hardly brilliant or memorable.

UP's score was brilliant. Very memorable, even to the point where you can whistle the main theme.

UP all the way -- and I didn't even like the movie. Overrated as hell.

Option C: Star Trek. :o

i haven't seen Up yet. My sister has it. only Pixar film i haven't seen. :csad:

But i've listened to both soundtracks. Both are great.

I only listen to film scores too man!

but for me? angels & demons pwns all of 2009

Up. Just on the waltz that opens up the movie alone.

 :word:

Angels & Demons score was BRILLIANT.

But I'm split between Up and Avatar. Up is rather consistent but there are parts in Avatar that are really good and other parts that are just plain bad imo.
For now I guess I lean more towards up

I’m listening to movie scores since I was seven. That is the music of my life, and that’s the only music I listen. The score is the fist thing I notice in a movie, and Avatar score was not only the best of the year, but also one of the all time best for me. Even if the movie sucked, the music was gona save it for me. Horner’s combination of two separate scores in to one brilliant one is the best there is. I personally haven’t heard better score since 2007’s Atonement by Dario Marianelli.

Up had totally forgettable score. It was the same with Ratatouille. Simple and emotional score, perfect for animation.

Avatar’s score was complex, and had as dramatic, emotional and epic tones, that made it so brilliant.

PS: Octoberist, do you remember Avatar? Because the score was half of the movie, and if you don’t remember it, you have never really watched the movie.

PS 2: I respect all of you’re opinions, and I want to express my gratitude that you all take of you’re time to post here. Thank you.

Let's take the fanboy equation at hand here:

One half loves a movie so much that if you don't like as much as them, they'll get mad.
The other half hates a movie so much because it's so popular and will understand why people hate their opinion.
Then they butt heads till kingdom come! It can be fun..sometimes..It depends on the debate I suppose.

I'm completely reasonable (for a geek). I liked Avatar, I mean..I'm gonna buy it on Blu-Ray. Not perfect but very enjoyable and an event movie.

I just think that the score wasn't it's strong points. It's not bad but Horner has done better in the past. But think about this: a bad John Williams score where his bad stuff are still better than most. That can applied to James Horner. Compliment to the max!

Up's score is not forgettable, or at least I don't see what you're talking about. I'm not too sure if you're just saying in spite of my comment or for your fondness of Avatar's score. Up is pretty darn catchy, and it hits the emotions right. It does not matter if it's animation or live action.

Thank you for posting.

I liked Up's score, and it is catchy, but I guess for me Avatar score was perfect, but let's face it, we are all different.

Hope we made an enjoyable thread, and just talk the brilliance of movie music.

PS: By the way, my opinion is that Giaccinho's score in Star Trek better than Up's but...

Tough one, because both are beautiful scores. Had to hand it to Avatar though, it moved me while i was watching the film, and it moves me when i listen to it now.

I have to admit, this one was awesome too.

You thought Avatar was a bad movie yet your avatar is Neytiri?

For me Avatar is the best movie of the year. That's why i put IF in the sentance. IF the movie sucked, the music was still gona save it, but thank god, the movie was brilliant.

Star Trek and Up had the best scores of the year. Giacchino had a helluva year.

i liked AVATAR's main theme of I see you in "one of the people" I think it needed to be in the movie more and to be more epic maybe with more of the Navi's chanting in it.

other than how :lmao: - worthy batman and robin is, that's the film's one saving grace for me to watch it again, Goldenthal's score

I have to admit, this one was awesome too.

I lean more toward Avatar's score...
