If you're talking about historical terms, Cleopatra, which starred Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, was made for $44 million. However, if you throw inflation into the mix, that 44 million in 1963 is probably upwards of 440 million today.

Apparently, it almost bankrupted MGM.
 
Using the same inflation as ticket's prices', Cleopatra cost around $330 million.

But it also made a lot of money.

And then there's the inevitable Heaven's Gate.

It made 57 million, which is equal to about 427.
 
Not exacly, if you consider that it took several years and re-releases (around a decade I think) to reach that number, so it's pratically impossible to calculate the exact number.

In fact, it took so long to make that money back that for a LOOONG time it was considered the biggest fiasco ever.
