Musicians aren't supposed to make money. They're supposed to suffer. Good music only comes from pain.
are you a musician?

I yell rhythmically in rhyme patterns over electronic instrumental beats

in other words, I rap.

I also used to play piano and french horn. but not really any more.

Don't forget skin flute, Ronny.

I also heard Ronny's a virtuoso on the upright organ.

I think 99.999999999999% of all people who throw the word sell-out around are sad pathetic creatures who want to live the life of rockstar through their hero "rock star". I don't really give a crap if someone makes something to make some dough, cause in the end that's what it's all about, and what it should be about.

Jeez...I thought I made a comment earlier about someone chasing the dollar only, and the "cheddar" being what drives you?

Would I consider someone with that attitutde "pathetic"??? Absolutely:) But again..it's all about what you want and who you are.

Sadly, there are too many people whos lone point in life is to make money, not to create "things" (define that how you will).

So, as a capitalist pig-dog I agree that it's all about the money. However, as a musician, writer, painter and photographer, I disagree with you, because when it comes to my artistic expression, the creativity and that entire process are all that matter to me. I do it for myself in order to fulfill artistic desires and visions and a deep-seated craving to realize those through their full expression. I've sold some work and was happy about that, no doubt, but I didn't set about creating something that I calculated would be something someone would pay me for, completely throwing out my own artistic needs in the process.

Now, I don't make a living solely off of my artistic endeavors. But if I did, I would want to do it on my terms and in a way that satiated my creative needs first and foremost.

Oh I agree entirely, but I think we have a different interpretation of what a sell-out is. To me a sell-out is someone who does something their "fans" want to do, whereas the people who get labled sell-outs a lot of the time are the ones who do what they want to do.

In the end though, making dough off of your "art" (I hate it when music is called art) should be, and most of the time is the biggest motivator. If it weren't then bands wouldn't sell t-shirts and such. I think it's funny though when I see bands like RATM selling t-shirts, but at the same token write songs about the ills of capitalism.

For me, a sell-out is someone who compromises their artistic integrity and does things that really aren't what they want to be doing with the aim of making money. In that regard, most of us are sell-outs at some level, because very few of us actually have our "dream jobs". So, going by that I definitely agree with you that someone who just tries to do what their "fans" want them to do with their music is a sell-out because they're not really doing what they want to do in terms of their artistic expression.

I think it's completely possible to stay true to artistic vision AND market the holy living crap out of it. Pearl Jam is a pretty good example of that. They told their record company to F/O so that they could set up their own label and continue to pursue the music they wanted to make. Money isn't their primary motivator for doing what they do, but they don't necessarily avoid making a buck, either, and I can respect that.

Limp Bizket.

I know I know, you don't agree. But think about it for a second.

If you've ever listened to their first album (3 dolla bill yall) it was unique and fresh. In fact, it ranks on my top 10 albums of all time. Then they started get popular. In comes the Significan Other. A MUCH worse album than the first. They sound like two totally different bands.

Then what happens? The grabbed hold of the bandwagon and released Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water. Crap. Utter crap. The guitarest left and they picked up some ****nut and released "The Green Album" (can't remember what it's called). Half the songs were with rappers or other people, or covers. It sucked hard.

They tried to make it better with the Unconvient truth vol.1, but that didn't go so well. And now where are they? Ask people who are 15 or so now a days if they've heard of Limp Bizket and they'll look at you like you're from mars.

That, my dear Hypers, is the biggest Sellout band ever.

I think I'm gonna start a bad, and tell everyone that my form of art is to milk free market society's for all their worth.

That way no one could legitimately call my band a sell-out band.
