Biggest Oscar Robbery

That's debatable. Star Wars is a landmark in cinematic history, sure. But Annie Hall was intellegent, funny, innovative and moving. It's much more of a thinking man's movie than Star Wars. And it's still a classic. Saying that Annie Hall robbed Star Wars implies that it didn't deserve the Oscars it won. It was only a shame that they were both made in the same year.

I've always thought that the biggest problems with the Oscars were this practice of "make up" awards. I'm not talking about prosthetics and mascara.

Some examples: Morgan Freeman won for Million Dollar baby. He was good, but it wasn't his best role. His best roles were probably in Street Smart and The Shawshank Redemption, which he was not awarded for. Same thing happened with Denzel Washington, who got the statue for Training Day when he was robbed for his work in Malcolm X.

This happens all the time. Al Pacino got an Oscar for Scent of a Woman when he should have gotten it for The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon or even Scarface. Tom Hanks should have gotten Oscars for Big and Cast Away, not for Philadelphia or Forrest Gump.

It's a silly political practice that has no place in a system based on merit.

Damn, you had me 'til mentioned Hanks! The idea that his role in Big was more deserving of an Oscar than Philadelphia or Forrest Gump is a bit laughable, IMO. And wasn't he at least nominated for Cast Away?

Gwenyth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love over Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth.

Robbed I tell you.

Morgan Freeman for Shawshank

Denzel Washington in Training Day over Russel Crowe in A Beautiful Mind and Sean Penn in I Am Sam. There's nothing I hate more than affirmative Oscars.

Training Day was brilliant... Penn got his Oscar anyway.... and Crowe wasn't going to go back to back....

I thought of another one:

While I do think One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest is a superior film, I think Steven Speilberg should've won for Jaws as Best Director over Milos Forman.

Tom Hanks should have gotten Oscars for Big and Cast Away, not for Philadelphia or Forrest Gump.

It really was a shame that Gladiator and Cast Away had to come out in the same year. It's Hanks' strongest performance and movie to date, I think.

Denzel Washington not winning for Malcom X

Morgan Freeman barely winning one last year, (he should have a counter full of those)

Jim Carrey not even being nominated for the Truman Show

Martin Scorsese not winning one

Two more I just remembered

DeNiro not winning best actor for Raging Bull
Joaquin Phoenix not at least getting a nomination for Gladiator.
I believe Joaquin was nominated (and rightly so) :)

I agree on Shawshank getting nothing
A Beautiful Mind getting best picture over FotR

in recent memory, the two biggest atrocities would have to be Roberto Benigni over Ed Norton for American History X (hell, every actor in that category was robbed) and Julia Roberts in Erin Brokovich over Ellen Burstyn for Requiem For A Dream.

So many, the oscars are a joke. Some examples more.

Chaplin withou any oscar.

Same with marx brothers or with cary grant or Hitchock, or peter o'toole, or richard burton.

Ordinary people winning over the elephant man and rainning bull.

Dancing with wolves winning over goodfellas.

Shakespeare In Love over Saving Private Ryan for best picture. The Hollywood honchos need to be slaughtered for making that decision.

Another one, Helen Hunt winning over Julie Christie

Jessica Tandy winning over michelle pfeiffer

Genna Davies winning over michelle pfeiffer.

Harrison Ford should have gotten that Best Actor Oscar for Witness.

I think Denzel Washington getting an oscar for playing a crooked cop was just horrible. Two words, racial stereotype. Same thing happened when Hattie McDaniel, first black woman to win an oscar, won it by playing a "Mammy" in Gone with the Wind. Same still, Halle Berry winning the oscar for screwing on the big screen and fullfilling that "Jezebel" stereotype.

Elizabeth taylor for butterfly 8 winning over shirley maclaine for the apartment.

With a great difference, Denzel and Halle were only good, Hattie was Amazing and a well deserved winner.

I thought of some more:

Ann-Margret not winning for Carnal Knowledge
Kate Hudson and Frances McDormand not winning for Almost Famous

That's such bull****! People praised Diane Lane and nominated her for Unfaithful, heralding it as the reboot of her career, for playing a chick who cheated on her husband. People keep getting hung up over that damn scene in Monster's Ball 'cause it's wasn't a traditional love scene. Her performance was still strong even if you exclude that scene.

As for Denzel, crooked cop as a racial stereotype? We usually associate crooked cops with white people, especially with all the nationally publicized instances of police corruption concerning the LAPD (Rodney King, OJ evidence tampering, Shooting of Notorious B.I.G.). I know everyone wants to ***** about him playing a crooked cop period, but damn, y'all act like white people don't get nominated and win for playing criminals. Again, a great performance, and I was happy to see Denzel play such a character. You have to admit, his career has been somewhat one-note. You can't always play the good guy.

Actor over actor, actress over actress, movie over movie...that´s always debatable.

The only blind robbery (at least that i can think of) was in 1995, for Best Visual Effects, when Forrest Gump won over The Mask.
True Lies was even better than Forrest Gump in the FX department, but, The Mask.....The Mask was 100 minutes special effect.
