Birds of Prey Birds of Prey General Discussion and Speculation

I think you’re misunderstanding me. I don’t like that the Birds (and to a lesser extent Harley) don’t look like themselves, but I respect and understand it as an artistic choice.

What annoys me is the idea that we need to see characters undergo a 2 hour journey to get them to a place where it’d be appropriate for them to wear a cape or a mask.

Ah, yes, I see what you’re saying.

And if it’s bad sequels suffer, so, yeah, I’m not betting the house on this one matching that figure.
The sequel to SS is being made by James Gunn. That's the one that will live or die by its predecessor's reception. This looks like a spin-off, so it's a crapshoot. Could go either way depending on word-of-mouth and how many people want to see Harley without Joker. If people didn't like SS but liked Harley, then they might prefer to see her free from that group, IDK. Her popularity as a character eludes me and always has, so I'm not going to presume to guess. I just know I'll be checking it out because it looks like a fun time and because of the talent involved.

A film doesn't make $750mil with no fans, sorry.

And I say this as someone who absolutely hated it, and doesn't like Harley Quinn (any version) at all. But people obviously dug her. I think you're confusing online chatter with the actual public. The vocal people online rarely speak for the majority. Money is the only surefire gauge of how general audiences feel, because the only way movies make big bucks like that is through repeat viewings and word-of-mouth. Which means, yep, they loved Venom and Transformers, too.

Not to mention the amount of Margot Harley cosplay is through the roof. She connected with a lot of people.

It’s the animated series that kicked her off, the thing is she wasn’t nearly as insufferable in that as she’s become in the last 10 years. Cosplayers have a lot to do with it too. You go to any con and there are dozens of Harley’s there.

Its...kind of like a BvS/WW situation. Audiences hated BvS but liked Gal and as a result BvS had no affect on her solo and it did incredibly well. Now, thing is...Harley didn’t really have a “Is She With you?” moment in Suicide Squad did she? How are we really guaging how much audiences really loved her in that movie?

She was always insufferable to me, from her very first appearance in BTAS. But I'll admit she at least had her amusing moments there.

Do you guys have hope in this movie? I personally think it could be really good thanks to Robbie, who seems to love the character.

I can't say I was hugely impressed by the trailer, but I didn't hate it either, although it's hard for me to be trash something that I had absolutely no hype for. Suicide Squad was such a hot mess of a movie, but Margot Robbie was definitely one of my favorite things about it, so I do like the fact that she is getting a bigger role in this. This looks like it could just be a better version of SS, and if that's the case than honestly I'd be fine with it.

Harley cosplay was popular long before 2016's SS. SDCC 2014 held a huge Harley cosplay event. I still contend that her popularity with a movie going audience is overrated. I still say that Will Smith brought in a lot of the audience for the first film.

While true, something needs to be said about Cassandra Cain. DC takes a major L on this one.

I respect the director Cathy Yan for moving away from the "Mute Asian girl" trope. In fact I expected it but yeah, everything else what happened? It's like they didn't even try to respect Cassandra Cain as a character.

WB: "Give the people what they want." :o

It helped that Wonder Woman was actually good.

Well that’s the thing, liking something from one film doesn’t mean you’ll support a spin-off. But I guess this will be the truest test to the strength of that claim.

I can respect them wanting to do their own thing in terms of costuming, but I’m starting to get sick of hearing, “x will come in a sequel.” I understand taking characters on journeys, but good God. Not everyone and everything needs to be Batman Begins-ed.
Um, that’s the opposite. Nolan made film by film... he never intended to but the egg before the chicken ala Snyder or Webb’s Spider-Man.

I was using that movie as a relevant example of taking a significant amount of time to bring a character to a place where they feel the need to put on a costume or be theatrical. It’s a deliberate approach that can work, but isn’t always necessary.

I’m too tired to jump on the “DC sucks” train after this trailer. It happens after every trailer. I remember when the trailer and costuming for Aquaman sucked. And then it didn’t. I remember when the trailer and costuming sucked for Shazam!. And then it didn’t. I remember when the trailer and costuming for Joker sucked. And then it didn’t.

This looks fun, it looks unique, it looks well written and it looks like the sort of movie that Marvel wouldn’t make. I say that not as a dig at Marvel, but simply in recognition that DC has to pave its own way.

The same people complaining that Huntress and Black Canary are nothing like the comics are the same people complaining (correctly) that you don’t see anything of them. How you can accept the latter as proof and draw the former as a conclusion is mystifying.

The reason why everyone looks the way that they look is given in the first few seconds of the trailer - Harley isn’t the only one of them that needs emancipation. They’re supposed to look bland, while those who are oppressing them look colourful and over the top.

Very Harley-centric trailer. I was expecting more of the other characters. Hopefully they're in the next trailer more, as this one was establishing where Harley is now (i.e. no Joker.)

I really liked the fights at the end. Really want to see more of the action.

I do hope there is a good crime plot amidst all the Harley shenanigans and the other characters get to shine too.

At this point I'm pretty convinced none of the other Birds of Prey got any positive feedback during test screenings.

And now you're just projecting. There's been no chatter about that, rumors or otherwise, whatsoever. The only buzz we've heard about test screenings has actually been positive. The marketing is focused on Harley because this was obviously designed as a vehicle for her, and she's the familiar face for audiences.

We'll see.

Harley Quinn has arrived
The trailer wasn't wow awesome like something out of Avengers or the MCU but its DC's own little brand of female team up that we haven't gotten yet in cinema outside of charlies angels

We'll see.

Well no...we have seen the reactions.

So we have seen that the movie got a positive reaction from the test screenings.

Even those who themselves have been sceptical have conceded they’ve heard nothing but good things.

Passing on this like I expected. I like Black Mask but never been into the Birds of Prey much and Harley is cool and all but overrated to me.

The film has Roman Sionis but not Black Mask and Harley Quinn shouldn't have such a huge role in a BOP film

Yeah but now very few are dressing as BTAS HArley or comic Harley they are dressing as Margot Harley which is a completely different look.

You're new to the reported, "positive test screenings" for a CBM game, aren't ya?

Oh is this the part where you start telling us about fan screenings of other films and pretend it means the test screening for this film is the same way? You are like 2 months ahead of schedule then ;)
