Birds of Prey Birds of Prey General Discussion and Speculation

Yeah but now very few are dressing as BTAS HArley or comic Harley they are dressing as Margot Harley which is a completely different look.
And? It means the liked her character. She was one of the few highlights from Suicide Squad.

I’m just hoping the script for this is good.... It looks good but that’s only one half of the equation for a good film.

I was listening to someone who made a very good point about this film. Given how crappy their relationship was developed in SS the entire premise of this movie is really dependant on the audience knowing the history of the HQ/Joker relationship in other stories. And given Leto is not in this movie it waters things down even more because it means you can't set anything up properly in the beginning for anyone who isn't familiar with SS. So, this is a really strange film that has a premise based on someone leaving an abusive relationship, that won't be able to show just how bad that relationship actually was. It's entirely reliant on you filling in the blanks.

I respect the director Cathy Yan for moving away from the "Mute Asian girl" trope. In fact I expected it but yeah, everything else what happened? It's like they didn't even try to respect Cassandra Cain as a character.
Yeah, "The mute Asian girl who has fighting skills and is angry" would have come across as stereotypical derivative version to general audiences, not to mention the fact that Critics will complain she is an example of cardboard thin characterization which means bad writing.

The things that are positive for Birds of Prey.

* Stunt scenes directed by John Wick stunt Director.
* Great Cinematography by Matthew Libatique who was cinematographer for movies like - Iron Man, Black Swan, A Star is Born and Venom.
* Musical score by Daniel Pemberton who worked on musical scores for movies like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, King Arthur Legend of the Sword.
* Cathy Yan, who's first movie was received well by Critics.
* Script by Christina Hodson, who worked on well received movie Bumblebee. For what was reported a few months back, this script is also well written.
* Presence of CGI Hyena in this movie as Harley's Pet.

I’m too tired to jump on the “DC sucks” train after this trailer. It happens after every trailer. I remember when the trailer and costuming for Aquaman sucked. And then it didn’t. I remember when the trailer and costuming sucked for Shazam!. And then it didn’t. I remember when the trailer and costuming for Joker sucked. And then it didn’t.

This looks fun, it looks unique, it looks well written and it looks like the sort of movie that Marvel wouldn’t make. I say that not as a dig at Marvel, but simply in recognition that DC has to pave its own way.

The same people complaining that Huntress and Black Canary are nothing like the comics are the same people complaining (correctly) that you don’t see anything of them. How you can accept the latter as proof and draw the former as a conclusion is mystifying.

The reason why everyone looks the way that they look is given in the first few seconds of the trailer - Harley isn’t the only one of them that needs emancipation. They’re supposed to look bland, while those who are oppressing them look colourful and over the top.
Yeah, I can already see the same people say that Matt Reeves' The Batman, James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, Andy Muschietti's The Flash will suck, as DC Sucks. Great arguments right there. :o

I wanna like this trailer, but I just can't. Don't like Harley's new look, or that weird Yiddish accent she can't pull off. And there's no literal black mask. And the plot sounds zany for the sake of being zany. I also hate the aesthetics and tone.

They should have just called the movie, Harley Quinn. I didn't see Birds of Prey in that trailer, like if I didn't know the official title, I would have guessed, Harley Quinn is just the title of the film. Its a meh trailer and its giving me Suicide Squad vibes. Style over substance once again.

I liked it a lot. This looks like a fun time and a good movie to me. Maybe it’s cause I’m not a huge comic reader but the Birds of Prey thing doesn’t bother me. I can see how it would bug fans though. And while it’s obvious the trailer was focusing way too much on Harley and the movie itself will be focusing on her a lot, I’m hopeful that the other characters get their moments to shine and please the fans. I’m especially excited to see MEW :atp:.

That was all I was saying. I dont know whether any of them liked the film I was just commenting they liked her in it.

Like I've said before, it'll probably be a good movie. It's just not what I personally wanted out of a BOP movie, or even a HQ movie. It's just a vanity project for Margot and to a lesser extent Cathy. But I hope it does well cause I always root for comic book movies. But it's getting harder to do with the MCU's stagnant formula and tone, and DCEU new aforementioned wacky approach to everything.

As far as I know Cain didn't stay that way in comics and this didn't have to be her origin, so she didn't have to be like that in the movie. And I also question why use the character if they don't want to, as far as I've seen, use the character.

Filmmakers have creative freedom to some extent, for example Sam Raimi introduced the concept of "Organic web-shooters", which was not present in Spider-Man comics. Did he not want to use the Spider-Man as he existed in comics ?

I liked the organic web shooters, but I also understand why people didn't. The complainers aren't always necessarily wrong. Both sides have their fair points.

I think changing something like how they use their weapon, similar to what I think the webshooters thing is, as different than changing something I think is more connected to their origin. I also think similarly about the webshooters issue, if someone doesn't like it I can accept that, in the case of the Raimi movies I'm not against it, but I prefer mechanical since.

That is not even remotely the same. Giving parker organic web shooters did not drastically change him as a character. Taking a character who is mute, an assassin, and a dangerous one at that is not the same as turning her into a kid who talks and for all we know has zero traits of the character and what made her popular.

Organical web-shooters were connected to Spidey's origins though, he got that ability as he was bitten by a genetically modified Spider (and not by a radio active spider as in comics) Peter Parker getting his powers is connected to his origins, which was changed and so was his ability to shoot webs.

Mute Asian girl who's an assassin looks derivative and stereotypical, which could be the reason why they decided not to use it, besides making her mute robs her of any opportunity to have verbal interaction with Harley and other BoP, which would make viewers think that her character was not developed fully and she was given a 2-dimensional character.

Based on the trailer I watched, this is basically a Harley Quinn movie and has very little to do with the idea of Birds of Prey. At least Margot Robbie is having a time of her life but it just feels like its a vanity project for her and that WB is only doing this film to keep Robbie on board. But I acknowledge that I'm in a minority since most posters think this looks like a zany fun movie and I'm sure this movie will make a lot of money in the box office.

You can tell that they were heavily inspired by Deadpool.

Margot's accent reminded me of someone...I finally realized she sounded exactly like Rita from Doom Patrol, she was also the hot chick from 2 and half men

I can see the film making 600-700M+ and hardcore fans hating it lol

The trailer looks a Harley film but TDK looked like a Joker film until you see it's actually a Harvey film with Joker and Bat in support, totally a good move to reintroduce HQ back to the mainstream, a film where she breaks away from a monster, get them interested, then morph the marketing into a team, girl gang film later on, we hardly saw MEW properly in this one, they are just teasing now. I am sure they know what they are doing especially seeing who sold the most shirts in this cast.

I laughed at the post credit scene lol little girl's reaction
