Birds of Prey Birds of Prey General Discussion and Speculation

I think my main issue with the trailer is that Harley is just not very funny in it and her lines are not witty at all. The Suicide Squad trailers made her seem like genuinely unique aND funny character- here she just seems annoying

Mute Asian girl who's an assassin looks derivative and stereotypical, which could be the reason why they decided not to use it, besides making her mute robs her of any opportunity to have verbal interaction with Harley and other BoP, which would make viewers think that her character was not developed fully and she was given a 2-dimensional character.
I don't agree. Logan had a I think younger girl who didn't speak english, but I don't think I've heard 2 dimensional complaints about her.

But even then, it didn't have to be a story about this character so young and the story doesn't have to have her speak to give her dimension and I think it could have her grow to be more vocal throughout the movie. If they didn't want to do that story, why position the story this way?

What films exactly have a mute Asian girl in it?

Harley really is better in small doses, anyway.

At this point I'm pretty convinced none of the other Birds of Prey got any positive feedback during test screenings.

Reactions have been positive lol, unless you are Jett

Marketing is based on Margot because she's Margot freaking Robbie, sold a bunch of merchandizes 3 years ago, familiar for the GA, just popped up in the Tarantino film, and will pop up again around award seasons in the same period as film release.

If lack of others in a teaser means poor reactions, then Harvey must got poor reactions at the TDK test screenings

Margot's Harley Quinn is not funny at all.

X-Men Apocalypse. Olivia Munn and Lana Condor had four lines.

Jubilee in X2/X3 didn't really have lines as well.

Well said.

It's a combination of already existing movie tropes, which is why I said in some of my posts that it looks derivative concept. Angry girl as side kick ? Hit girl and X-23 in Logan are examples of that, while I admit, X-23 in Logan was not mute but she had few lines of dialogue. Then you have numerous examples of young Asian girls shown as expert in fighting skills and they are often depicted as antagonists. Comic book accurate Cassandra Cain would have been a combination of all that.

That'd just be poor writing. You can do plenty with Cassies tragic origins. Especially someone as serious as her playing off of quirky Harley? Writes itself. And Cassie does go on to talk but that's all character development. If you strip her of her mob father and Lady Shiva as a mother, complete martial arts background, it's not Cassie. (All assumptions at this point).

Giving Peter organic web shooters did not rob him of his character or origin. He was still a nerd, still into science, he just had unlimited webs.

There are many instances where they changed Peter's back-story too, for example in Spider-Man:FFH, Peter gets his tech suit from uncle Tony Stark, there's no uncle Ben, but I feel we are going off topic, so I will stop.

What the hell did they do to Mary Elizabeth Winstead? :yuk:

She's merely wearing baggy black pants and a beach-like tube top fishnet shirt.

Also, is Renee kicked out of the GCPD in this... or why would she be working with these criminals/vigilantes?

Its one thing to be apart of Gordon's team that is ok to be associated with Batman, but this seems odd.

Since this movie will be just introducing some members of Birds of Prey and we will learn about the origins of BoP, they wanted costumes that can be made using everyday clothes, it would look odd to see comic book accurate costumes right from the start as the team is not fully formed and they have not really started the crime-fighting, so basically they are just regular people not super-heroes. Think how Jessica Jones looked in her Netflix series.

Besides, in Marvel's Defenders, how comic book accurate costumes were these ?

Not sure if you watched Defenders but if you did, why did you pick that picture when you know the context behind it?

For the record, I've just seen few clips on YT but as far as I know.. Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage were seen in everyday street clothes in their first season. Daredevil had a very basic costume in first season, so that particular Defenders pic captures what they were going for in their series.

Still not feeling it. At all.
To add to this, it just feels like Suicide Squad 2 (or a spin-off) to me. That’s not surprising, of course.

And Black Mask feels like they wanted to use Joker, but everyone was tired of Leto and his on-set bull**** so they wrote him out.

The whole season of Defenders takes place in a fairly short time period and that picture is from when all 4 end up in the same place by accident and things suddenly escalate. Daredevil gets into his suit in the finale.

If there's one positive thing I can say about BOP is that it will lure in casual fans of Harley Quinn and gets them into Huntress, Canary, Cassandra Cain or even Montoya.

As a huge fan of the character, I'm annoyed that Cassandra Cain in this movie feels like a completely different character from the one from the comics. Stripping away her disability and reducing her as a sidekick to Harley feels weird to me.

Couldn't Cass still struggle with speech without being totally mute? I'm thinking of a character like Eleven on Stranger Things whose speech had limits, due to isolation and exploitation, but was able to improve once removed from that environment.

I prefer that to her being totally voiceless, because I agree with others in this thread that it's kind of a stereotype and trope to create these quiet or non-speaking Asian women who kick ass. It was a criticism leveled at Karen Fukuhara's Katana and her character, Kimiko (The Female), on The Boys. Also, I think calling Cass a sidekick of Harley's is a bit of a stretch. They're all more or less swept up in the same madness as opposed to a genuine partnership or mentorship.

As for her look, it kind of reminds me of this panel from the new Shadow of the Batgirl book.

Trailer is so-so, I didn't have much interest in seeing this in the cinema beforehand & the trailer hasn't exactly swayed me.

I guess she's the "butch" one of the bunch :o

Daredevil had a basic costume for most of season 1 but got his superhero costume towards the end and we had promotional pictures showing said costume, so we knew it was coming. I don't think the "BOP" will get flashier costumes for the final battle or whatever because the whole point of this movie seems to be that they want the barebones version of these characters, I guess :o

If there's one positive thing I can say about BOP is that it will lure in casual fans of Harley Quinn and gets them into Huntress, Canary, Cassandra Cain or even Montoya.

Assuming of course that the characters are memorable in this movie...

Reminded me of Maggie Q in one of the die hard movies, the one where Willis killed a helicopter with a police car, that was incredible

Neither did most of the other X-Men not named Wolverine, Deadpool, Xavier, Mystique & Magneto.

Like Jean, Cyclops, Quicksilver, Hank, Ellen Page...

if they didn't want asian girl assassin with few words then why put Cass in there but i guess they needed a token asian girl.

but hey we've only seen glimpse of her so she could be a badass assassin in the actual movie who knows.

Ya I think that's it, seeing how we have latino, black, white, and they need an asian rep but don't need another ass kicker, so just use Cassandra....Margot's worldview of diversity I guess, these Hollywood people mostly have weird views vs actions, kinda like the outrage with a white actor playing a Jap character in Hellboy, so they cast a very well known and relatively well fed Korean actor (compared to other asian, or Jap actors in Hollywood) to play a Jap and call it a huge victory.

I still doubt this Cassandra will become Batgirl, but my friend's already going nuts about this actress becoming Batgirl lol, i was like calm down dude...

Though where's the Indian and Polynesian rep in this, could have given Black Mask and Zaz to those roles if they wanna be complete =P

Where is this Cassandra only has a "few words" rumor coming from?
