Birds of Prey Birds of Prey General Discussion and Speculation

I remember being very leery about the accent she chose to give Harley in the trailers and feeling like it was gonna annoy me but she won me over within 20 mins of BOP and i didnt even notice it after a while. She really put on a charismatic performance.

I thought she was going to be as irritating as Madonna in the Who's That Girl movie but, like you, she won me over (for the most part).

On another note, this amused me:

She really loves playing that character.

I mean she burst on the scene with Wolf of Wall Street. She always was seen as talented...also very hot. Maybe not funny, but she has been a respected actress since her breakthrough

Yeah it's weird to me. To this day I have yet to meet an actual person who has seen Aquaman in theaters. Or Jurassic World 2. Or Spider-Man FFH. But that's anecdotal and obviously they were very successful
I mean I knew she was a decent actress but a lot of them tend to be feeling themselves way too much, but being as hot as she was and willing to act goofy and have it be genuine is usually a keeper. Nowadays you see a lot of insanely attractive women in the game trying their best to be "relatable" by acting like a goofball Youtuber or some ****.

And failing miserabely.

She didn't. She was awesome. And so was the rest of the cast. Huntress' intro and overall persona had me in stitches.

Also true.

Matter of fact, if this movie were an Arkham game, it would feel like a side mission anyway. Threat level was low.

Gotham's a big place and Batman can't be everywhere at once and GCPD and Arkham Asylum aren't exactly good at keeping the criminals at bay.

And also, why the heck does every story need to be big scale?

Should Harley have stopped an atomic threat in Gotham? Saved the DC universe? Why?

There is no one way to tell a comic book inspired story, even if the success of the MCU has made people think there is.

would be funny if Harley and co did all the work and Batman shows up at the end and snatches Black Mask.

Fits the narrative of the film but would cause so much controversy, which might be what the film needs right now for exposure and box office lol

Can I ask, what in the actual Hell was with that
dance number when Black Mask was slapping her around?
Like i know this is supposed to be super quirky because this is from Harley’s pov but that was some weird editing.

reminded me of the Joker/Harley baby scene at the end of SS haha

It was her mind trying to make an unpleasant situation a little more tolerable while also showing us that she’s not quite that stable.

I liked the lower stakes and it wasn't some oh black mask is gonna blow up the city And harley and her new friends have to stop him. It was a simple story and gave them more time to focus on the new characters and there backstories and motives all filtering into this particular story.

This Type of story telling is what the suicide squad movie Desperately needed. Also top marks to the fight choreographer on bird of prey, clean and I could clearly tell what was happening.

sounds like the box office thread

Birds of Prey in a weird way reminded me of Marvel's Netflix series before they were cancelled in that they existed in their own little corner of the universe. Perhaps HBO Max might be a good place for these sorts of DC projects.

Disassociation is a common thing with abused women. That's actually one thing I really liked about this movie - it didn't gloss over Harley being a survivor, nor her intelligence.

Just my two cents on where we will go with this franchise

- Hamada takes the hit for R rating, even though Cathy and Margot pushed for it in the first place.

- Hamada shakes off the marketing blame (per Deadline, they probably will blame on the first cut somehow) and uses the reshoot as his credit for good responses.

- Margot continues cooperating with WB, and she gets her passion projects going and stars in duds like Tarzan

- both sides compromise for the next outing

- PG13, stronger and longer marketing, and WB decides the title and cast (eg if Patty’s WW just broke even we might end up with Emma Stone as Cheetah etc)

- we might see a HQ/Ivy film, and if does 300-400M with the corrections, we get GCS vs BOP, with Oracle in team bird, with a bigger actress. If that makes similar or more, we might get a BOP proper with Oracle

- no more R films for this series, but they can negotiate R for blu Ray releases.

I think these can happen IF they can get it past 200M, ideally a x 3 multiplier to break even or not lose too much.

They were happy with Alicia getting a sequel for Tomb Raider, Margot’s even more in-house, so as long as it doesn’t flop badly anything is still in the cards.

Its reviews and audience reactions and brand is just too good to cut it off here, Batman Begins didn’t make much but became a huge franchise, they have the goodwill, just need to package it better

I'm going to give my capsule review of this movie. I liked it quite a bit as a Harley Quinn movie. But I do think it left a lot to be desired as a Birds of Prey movie. I like how a lot of the characters fit into the story, but I do think the movie focused a bit too much on Harley Quinn for the new characters to work. I would like to see in the movie more evenly focused amongst everybody. But that being said, it had interesting style, since great performances, and was very entertaining.

I did really like this movie actually use the fact that she's a psychologist in the movie. A lot of things with Harley Quinn tend to just portray her as crazy or like a female Joker or some version of Deadpool for DC, but this one actually used her backstory to the movie's advantage.

I just don’t want them to end Margot’s time as Harley with this. It’s clear that it’s liked but maybe the R rating hurt it the most.

Shes not going anywhere. The character is fine but I don't think Most are that interested in birds of prey and are more into suicide squad etc properties with bigger name villains.

i cant say the R rating hurt when you had dead-pool set the record in 2016 in the same month.

I liked huntress, black canary, the cop and little girl all had a part to play in the story overall and Harley just happened to stumble into the middle. Such a simple story but highly effective with a clear direction. I keep going back to the suicide squad because of how butchered that movie was in editing and story when comparing to this.

birds of prey feels like a perfect marriage of suicide squad and guardians of the galaxy on a small scale.

Birds of Prey were just introduced in this movie, despite the movie's title, it not really a BoP movie.

I am aware of this and I knew this going in. But, even knowing this I do think that the new characters were not served as well as they could have been. Particularly feel like Huntress should have been in this movie more. Again, as a Harley Quinn vehicle, I think this movie works. I often see this movie referred to as Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey, and I do kind of feel like that's the title they should have rolled with.
