I think Black Mask would be the bets choice for the main villain of the third film.

The villains in nolans series have always attempted to outdo Bruce Waynes own situation in each film:
*in BB, the villains were the seemingly "untouchable" mob bosses, a character inspired by -and using - fear, and finally Ra's, who takes Batmans own mission much further than the hero
*In TDK, batman is established, and the joker attempts to "out freak" him. Two Face, similarly is a vigilante, though without batman's rule(s).
*By Batman 3, the hero has become an outcast. At this point, black mask (a merging of freak and mobster) takes him chance to exploit batman's weakness - his status as an "bad guy"

Sionis appears on the surface a respectable, young memeber of gotham's elite (moreso than bruce can be, neccesitated by his callow "act" as Wayne). Sionis put a bounty on Batman's head for the good of the city. At this point, Sionis seems a (slightly misinformed) good guy. Unbeknowst to characters (and some of the naudience) he is actually a high ranking mobster, using a facade of respectability to kill off the hero.

I think riddler would be a good sidekick (a la Long Halloween) but the conflict between the elite of gotham and the noble outcast could be pretty strong

By the end of the film, black mask has his disguise burnt to face (as in the comics) signifying the point gotham realises who the true bad guy is

or something..

re: The Joker

Recasting the joker would be anticlimactic, i feel, and not mentioning him would diminish his character. I think the best way to deal with him would be to place the film between the joker breaking outr of arkham (mentioned in the introduction by Gordon) and the joker sending batman a calling card at the very end of the film. This way, the joker isn;t onscreen, but casts a shadow over the film - effectively batman's struggle in this film - to stay alive and defeat black mask, is almost a prologue for his future (off screen) battles with the joker ("i think you and i are destined to do this forever")

If the Joker sends a calling card to Batman at the end of the film, then the audience will expect to see him in the fourth movie. I doubt the next director who comes to helm the franchise will want to have his hands tied that way. Just mention the Joker once or twice in BB3. Audiences are used to villains showing up in a movie, then being defeated or killed and not appearing in the next movie. Besides, everyone will understand why we won't see the Joker again.

I don't want different director...

X-Men 3 *cough*

I'm talking about the fourth movie since I'm assuming that Nolan's going to be done after he finishes his trilogy. If Nolan's coming back for the fourth he can end the third movie however he wants.

I was think Joaquin Phoenix but now since hes retired im not sure
also i was thinking Matt DIllon but he might be too old

we need someone around the same age as Christian Bale since Roman and Bruce met each other when they were little
So like around 32-36 year old range

Just as long as they make Sionis into a mob boss/cult leader, that could make it really interesting. Phoenix would have been a good Black Mask, but he has quit acting.

Meh... Going from Ra's/Scarecrow over Joker/Two-Face to... Black Mask??

Weak, very weak. Black Mask has a lame origin story and no interesting modus operandi. He's just a sadistic gangster in a mask. There's no way that can succesfully follow TDK, even if you throw in Bane for good measure.

Actually I always felt Black Mask is one of the few remaining villains that could allow for another Oscar type performance from someone. I can see scenes were he's talking to his mannequin being deeply disturbing and twisted. He's unique in that he's as much a threat to Bruce Wayne as he is to Batman.

I can see scenarios where he starts kidnapping Wayne board members eventually getting to Lucius Fox. The False Face society is another aspect that would be interesting in that it paints him as an almost David Koresh style villain, causing a siege on Gotham to the level of the Joker, but in a different and fresh way. We all know the Joker was using goons that escaped from Arkham to do his deeds, perhaps he can up the ante from that to some of Gothams more "affluent" citizenry

Josh Brolin or Viggo Mortenson would be PERFECT as Black Mask.

I totally agree, although I think there have been quite a few good suggestions in this thread - Ewan McGregor, Ryan Phillipe and Benicio Del Toro especially.

I think it's a shame he wasn't a few years younger because I've thought for years that Andy Garcia would have been an excellent Black Mask.

Ahaa yea Andy Garcia is a legend. I think he could still pull it off, he doesn't look that old. Well he didn't the last time i see him! :D

Phillipe might be a good Black Mask.....DiCaprio would be solid, but Casey Affleck might be more ideal overall because of the creepy look he has.

Affleck kinda has that Joaquin Phoenix look to him.....

Viggo in a Nolan movie? Count me in!

Good points DK.

But i'm favouring Viggo at the moment. He just has that stare, that menacing stare that could just cut through you. With that creepy Black Mask and his eyes piercing straight out would make for a very menacing villain IMO. Hell, Viggo looks like a bit of a nut case anyway.

Benicio Del Toro or Al Pacino as Black Mask. Since the success of TDK we could see bigger names. Pacino has worked with Nolan before right?

Haha I can imagine Pacino delivering some lines in a Batman movie.. that should be fun :funny:

Yea on Insomnia.

But Al wouldn't work as Black Mask because Roman is a similar age to Bruce.

And I could see Del Toro as Bane.

This is what I meant in my previous post :funny:

idk I think they could change some things up and make Roman a business partner that Bruce ends up looking up to because they a similar up bringing.I think it would be good for a character like Black Mask to have a big name like Pacino casted.

I'm ok with big names. Not that big, though.

Yea if ol big Al was cast then i would fear it would be more about him than Batman/Bale. But the idea of Pacino in a Bat film is quite tempting.

Oh yeah! If Nolan wants an older actor for Black Mask....then Viggo would be a great choice!
