Blade Runner 2049 - Part 3

In this post-modern world, you can call any sound "music". But there's a difference between something really musical and vast planes of just sound design. There was literally nothing "musical" like this in BR2049:

You can hum the melody, it can stuck in your head, you can whistle it a week, a month, a year after you listened to it. There's no such thing in the whole BR2049 soundtrack, except where they took the Vangelis' melody and put it into the score.
Yeah, that's nice. Its music, it fits the film and it is rather beautiful and effective. Why I haven't stopped listening to the score since leaving the theater yesterday.

Alcon are the rights holders and they were the ones who brought Denis in because they also worked with him on Prisoners. Only reason WB are involved is because they have a distribution deal with Alcon in North America. Sony became involved later as WB didn't want to put all of the money up for this seeing as its' not one of their 'in house" movies so to speak.

But I didn't say that 2049 isn't an independent film, I was wondering why Valerian shouldn't be considered one since both films are produced by independent companies. The only reason I could see for separating them would be if 2049 was financed by a private person, but it wasn't.

True, let's just say they both cost a hellluva lot of money for a none studio based movies. :funny:

Hmm possibly. But wasn't Fox involved with the original trilogy financing? Not into SW history dude.

Fox paid for Star Wars. That is why they own the rights for it still. Lucas financed Empire and the rest of the SW films he made himself. He spent 33m in loans against his earnings from the first film. 33m in late 70s money.

Just got back. It was a solid sequel. I expected less Harrison Ford, and was pleasantly surprised. My only major complaint is the story was incredibly predictable. It's not as good as it's predecessor, but it also wasn't a jaded cash grab either. This film felt incredibly genuine. I'm sitting in the 7-8 range. I'd like to see another one..

Why are we so preoccupied with how much this movie will generate? As long as the movie is great, what difference does it make?

I would rather this completely bombs and is considered worthy of the "Blade Runner" canon than if it became another dispensable blockbuster. "Transformers" movies crack a billion dollars. Box office isn't indicative of quality.

It's human nature. It helps validate the film's greatness. It's evidence that Blade Runner is more than just a cult classic. It's a worldwide global phenomenon.

It's similar to Rotten Tomatoes. Fans want movies they care about to get great reviews. If critics like the movie, it's symbolic that these movies are more than just commercial popcorn pieces, they are cultural landmarks and cinematic art renowned as more than just disposable entertainment.

Honestly it just sucked to see a good honest sequel flop, and other much more mediocre and bland movies succeed. It just doesn't bode well for cinema, really makes you think about your fellow humans as well. It was a risky movie to make, but all this means is less risk taking in making movies. We're gonna keep getting half a dozen lousy superhero movies every year and bland star wars sequels every christmas for so many years to come. The thought of that makes me want to keel over and die.

Honestly my largest concern now is that they release the exact same movie I saw last night on blu ray, and do not tamper with anything. I will protest that crap if they release some alternate shorter cut or do some weird stuff to this movie for the blu ray dvd release.

I'm seeing this again in IMAX. I can't wait.

And my favorite scene?

K finding the horse. Gosling's acting was incredible and even though you know what's coming the sense of it and K's reaction cuts deep. And not a word is said. What amazing directing.

I just saw it and it's quite good, but it is really bloated. There was easily 30 minutes that could have been left on the cutting room floor without changing the story one bit and I doubt anyone would notice.

Box office is hugely important. Good or daring movies flopping mean we won't be getting more good or daring movies. Studios will be reluctant to green light stuff like this if the execs know they won't make money

Gosling is hands down the best actor out when it comes to play stoic characters and one of the best out period. The same guy who does this does something like La La Land, The Nice Guys and Crazy.Stupid.Love and still crushes it

Incredible

Some of the characters and plot threads are already a bit underdeveloped. As much as I liked Luv I felt like she and Wallace didn't get enough time to become more realized villains like Roy whose motivations were actually pretty clear and relatable. Cutting the movie down might make it go by faster or be easier to sit through. But the end result is a weaker movie that already has a couple problems. People seem to like watching a movie and racing to the finish line instead of enjoying the ride. If there is any part of the movie that could have been cut if it "had to" or re thought its the replicant resistance thing.

Makes me wonder how this might affect Dune, which was really something I was looking forward to.

I loved it. If Roger Deakins doesn't get his Oscar this year, we riot!

Also, seeing some people complain about the runtime, I'm SO happy they didn't cut this down. It was well worth the runtime.

Dune isn't affected. He's already started prepping on Dune. Also as someone stated in the thread Dune has more action pieces and different Houses fighting etc to make it more popcorn-centric for audiences.

How do you think studios determine what films get made? If over the next 5 years we get all the best films of all time and they all bomb, we’ll never get those kinds of films ever again and will be stuck with Transformers equivalents for the rest of time. Thanks for your logic mate ;)

He is very watchable as the main focus of a film. I really rate this guy.

If he doesn't get it for this, he never will.

Just two. The Atreides and the Harkonnens.

The main ones yeah. I seem to remember other factions in later books though. Or am imagining that?

When you said families I thought you meant the big royal families fighting over Arrakis, like the Atreides and Harkonnens. But there are factions in the book like the Bene Gesserit and the Fremen.

This was an engrossing and intoxicating story of almost biblical proportions. It's indescribable for me. Just staggering.
