Blade Runner 2049 - Part 3

The box office is a damn shame.:( Besides the fact that it deserved better, I really wanted to see a third film dealing with [blackout]the Replicants and Deckard's daughter coming out of hiding and fighting for their right to live free.[/blackout]

I guess I'll have to hold out hope for a tv series, animated show, comic, or book.

I think just getting a sequel for a movie that was never all that big of a success critically or financially when it was originally released is gift enough.

One thing I really would like is a remastered version of the 1997 point and click computer game which was pretty impressive for its time. Has a very sophisticated script and you can actually interrogate suspects with the Voight-Kampf test.

Never gonna happen unfortunately. They lost the source code and all the assets to it ages ago when Westwood changed locations .They would have to rebuild it from the ground up.

Seriously? How do you lose stuff like that? There's no digital copy of it available anywhere?

With all these fan builds I see online, I feel like rebuilding it wouldn't be too insane, but then again, I'm not a computer programmer. Regardless, that's unfortunate news. IMHO the computer game is a cool little gem. There are videos of it all over YouTube if anyone wants to check it out.

You can find the game itself online in some of the more questionable places on the internet but the source code is gone. You can't pull that code from a retail copy. Without that, the most we would ever get in an official release would be the original game in wine wrapper so it can run on modern machines and thats if EA would ever allow it.

It's a real bummer because the game is really good.

Same way movie studios have lost entire films and film elements in the past century. Poor storage management, carelessness, general stupidity, and lack of foresight.

The original blade runner is an example of that. When they were doing the final cut they found some elements they needed in boxes in a garage. A damn garage. Studios would just trash stuff and auction stuff at random to make room for new film reels and elements. Partly because they didn't think theyd ever need that stuff for restorations and partly because some people in the businesses don't give a **** about preservation.

Is there any EU stuff worth getting into for the world of BR? (novels, graphic novels etc.)

Blade Runner 2: The Edge of Human, which is a direct sequel to the end of the original film.

Got out of my second watch today - caught a few more interesting details this time around.

I just love how the film opens. The eye opening isn't new, but the way the score just engulfs you - I get so many chills just from that.

Thought it was particularly interesting when K told Luv at Wallace Corp that Rachael was trying to provoke Deckard when they first met - and the subsequent line about how it must be nice to be desired and feel special. I thought it was an interesting and trite line to express one of the big themes of Blade Runner.

I also didn't realize Sylvia Hoeks portrayed the Replicant that Wallace killed - I think it adds an extra layer to the tears she cries as Luv in the same scene.

The smash cut to the silhouette of K in the radioactive Los Angeles with the smashing of the synth drums or whatever that was gives me chills. It reminded me of Akira or Ghost in the Shell or some of those other similar works of art that were inspired by the original BR - I love how slow and dreamlike Denis took that scene. Aesthetically, the walk through the erotic statues over to the bee farm and into the casino might be my most favorite moments of the film.

This analysis of Blade Runner helps express my feelings towards Joi and K really well. I thought I was alone in my interpretation of Joi and K's relationship.

The newborn replicant is played by Sallie Harmsen, not Sylvia. Just google her and you'll see the differences in face structure n stuff.

Doh, Wikipedia duped me. I knew something was off about that one.

It's so perfect. Intimate and about characters. Luv and K even have the same short-term motivation which is to stop Deckard from drowning. It is so refreshing given so many studio genre movies have to end on some "epic" battle. No, the loneliness of their silhouettes fighting against the darkness of waves while the light around Deckard faded was far more intense and engaging.

Yea, the ending was great. The whole fight sequence was shot in such a fantastic way, and those visuals, dark waves, Luv and K, and that shining car sinking into those dark waters.

Loved it. As well as the total ending [BLACKOUT]being just so personal and intimate, perfect.[/BLACKOUT]

How has this movie performed in the UK? I feel like everyone I know has seen it at least once - apart from me! I'm seeing it on Wednesday!

I'm sort of glad it didn't destroy at the box office... I've heard such good things about it that it's nice to know it's not going to be milked until it's run dry. If it had been a commercial success, there probably would have been endless spin offs and prequels etc.

Blade Runner has performed really well in UK so far. It's OW was 8 million (opened at No. 1) which is better than previous October Sci-Fi blockbusters like Interstellar (7.1 million), The Martian (7.3 million) and slightly lower than Gravity (8.2 million). It's PTA is also better than both Interstellar and The Martian but well behind Gravity.

In the sophomore weekend (we don't have actuals yet), BR2049 has collected 4.12 or 4.4 (depending on exchange rate) million. The movie led the weekend from Friday to Sunday but due to the Thursday night previews, Lego Ninjago will win the weekend. Still, the drop is very good. Total from UK is 16.2 million.

I knew us Brits had taste. Although I have to say, I haven't seen one tv spot for it over here. Then I'm also not a massive tv person. I also haven't seen many billboards or adverts on buses etc like you'd usually see. I do think the promotion for this movie has been pretty quiet over here, although I'm glad it's still managing to bring people in. The first movie definitely has a strong following here so I'm not surprised the sequel has done okay.

I'm really excited to see if the hype is real on Wednesday.

EDIT: Thanks for all the figures!

So damn gorgeous. It's no coincidence that the
memory-making device resembles a camera.
Denis's comment on photography/film and its important place in both capturing and sharing important memories in our lives. At least that's my assumption of what he was going for :)

I really can't understand how such a small number of people are interested in this. Even ignoring the visuals, the great reviews and word of mouth from the people who did see it and the reputation of the original, it's a film with Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford and Jared Leto!

I hate to say it but this might be a case where the wom amongst general movie viewers was toxic. People telling their friends "don't bother, its boring" probably is what caused it. :(

Even if that did happen, you'd expect a bigger opening weekend. I can see studio execs learning some very bad lessons after seeing the numbers from a probably award winning, very well made sci-fi film.

I might go see this for the third time in IMAX...
