Blade Runner 2049

I agree with Doctor Jones. As I said on twitter, I think that 2049 is going to be the most over predicted movie of 2017.

It's right to be skeptical, considering that the first film bombed at the box office back in 1982. But, on the same token, I think it could surprise everybody.

Blade Runner 2049 is a wild card at this point.

We know it bombed but it was so far ahead of its' time that it took about 10 years before Ridley and the movie got any recognition. BR2049 won't be a bomb.

I think BR will do very solid in the op weekend and then die off. The fans will see it. But if the sequel is anything like the original it will attract the casuals like a shut-in attracts women.

I love Blade Runner but if the sequel is just like it, people will hate its deliberate pacing, somber tone and lack of action.

Blade Runner being a critically panned flop during its original run has absolutely no bearing on anything regarding this film. Villenueve has said in a few interviews that his film will be very different in tone and structure than the original. Basically, he's making a Villenueve film set in the Blade Runner universe and featuring the lead character from the original.

The film is either going to succeed or fail with critics and audiences based on its own merits. If the film is solid and the marketing department does their job, there's nothing holding this film back from being a financial success. Also, as others have pointed out... they're not going for a franchise here. Look at how long they've been working on this. If this were merely a cash grab, the film would have come and gone a long time ago. They've taken their time trying to get this right and give moviegoers something special. There isn't any "reaching to the bottom of the barrel" going on.

Bottom line, the original is arguably one of the best science fiction films of all time(it's my FAVORITE film of all time). Yes, it took a long time for the film to earn that distinction, but it earned it nonetheless. That alone gives this film a head start at doing well theatrically. The rest is up to how good the final product and its marketing are.

And it's a sequel because it's following the first movies timeline and main character. He said this movie will be able to stand on its' own. So it's a quasi sequel in all respects.

And who knows how big Deckard's role will even be?

And who knows how big Deckard's role will even be?

I'm betting it's going to be a lot smaller than most people think. If he has even fifteen minutes of screen-time I'll be shocked. I'm pretty sure this is going to be Gosling's show.

Maybe he'll only show up at the end...

Staring out in the distance on some farm. The Gosling will extend to him an origami unicorn. He'll turn around looking intensely.

Credits.

Premise of that sound's familiar Dave. I just can't put my finger on what though.

As for storyline there was a very early rumour that Gosling's character is either looking for Deckard or hunting him. Harrison Ford wouldn't show up till the last third of the movie.

Doctor Jones is being a Debbie Downer? No way. :o

I'm not a Debbie Downer. It just so happens movies lately have sucked and judging by where things are going, it makes me sad to say I don't think it'll get much better with blockbusters.

Yet you keep appearing in this thread evreytime I and others post on here. Seems like you want to love Blade Runner like the rest of us Doc that and you're certainly interested in the movie. :funny:

Of course I'm interested! Just because I'm interested doesn't mean I automatically think it will do well. One of my favorite new directors, the best DP in the business with a great cast. Sure, why the **** not? Thing is what's more successful than Blade Runner is its influences that have bled into the DNA of more successful films over the past decades.

I sorta miss the old Doctor Jones. There is a fairly dramatic shift in attitude that saddens me. :(

I'll be happy again when movies stop making me sad.

😂😂😂

Actually though, there are rumors that he only appears at the beginning. Ridley confirmed a while back that the first scene of the film will probably be what was originally going to be the first scene of the first film. If you've seen Dangerous Days, then you know what scene I'm talking about and what that means.

I hope I won't regret this, but I can't see how can this movie turn out to be bad at this moment. The director is Dennis Villeneuve, one of the best filmmakers around and he's bringing his crew with him. We've got some great actors involved. This NEEDS to be good.

Btw. imagine Deckard being kidnapped by rogue Blade Runners who are led by Barkhad Abdi.

"Look at me, I'm the Blade Runner now!"

I think this could be the movie that wins deakins his oscar..his cinematography paired with sci-fi production design will be just awsome !

When you see a thread bump and hope for a teaser, but just a pointless comment.

just because 2016 blockbusters have been mediocre doesn't mean it will every year

2014 summer blockbusters had:

Days Of Future Past
Winter Solider
Edge of Tomorrow
Guardians Of The Galaxy
Interstellar
Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
22 Jump Street

2015 had:

Mad Max: Fury Road
Jurassic World
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation
Antman
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Inside Out

Teaser? They've been filming for, like, two weeks. :o

Bro you miss the sarcasm smile at the end?

No, I caught it. My point was simply that this thing is closer to the end of filming than it is to the beginning. We're still a looooooooooooong way off from getting any kind of a teaser for the film, but more than enough has been filmed to put one together if the studio wanted to.

Denis on the comparison between Arrival and BR2049.

http://www.torontosun.com/2016/11/08/new-blade-runner-has-its-own-personality-villeneuve

Do not expect Denis Villeneuve’s forthcoming Blade Runner sequel to look anything like his science fiction drama Arrival, which opens wide on Friday.
“They are two different movies,” Villeneuve tells the Toronto Sun in a telephone interview, while taking a break from shooting his Blade Runner in Budapest. “They are very different!”
Arrival, which stars Amy Adams as an American linguist trying to communicate with aliens in space ships hovering just above the ground in locations around the world, is remarkably realistic. Villeneuve’s team utilized an absolute minimum of special effects except when the aliens are depicted. Little flashy technology is shown.
“That was one of the main objectives,” Villeneuve says. “The idea was really to see what would happen if it was happening next Tuesday— on a rainy Tuesday morning in North America.” Arrival was shot on location in Villeneuve home province of Quebec, with most of the action set in the United States.
In contrast, Blade Runner 2049 is a long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s controversial classic from 1982. It starred Harrison Ford as a burned-out replicant hunter in a bleak, futuristic Los Angeles. Ford will make a cameo appearance in the sequel with Ryan Gosling headlining Villeneuve’s strong cast.
“The project that I am working on now has its own personality,” Villeneuve says warily, referring to how he has learned to adapt to the dystopian vision offered in the original Blade Runner.
“This is the first time that I am making a movie in someone else’s universe while trying to make something mine. It’s a strange transformation. So that’s where we are right now. It has its own personality because it was inspired by and is linked to the first movie, but it has its own aesthetic.

“For obvious reasons, I am not allowed to discuss it. But it is like a different world. That is all I can say!”
