Imagine if they do an animated movie one day.

Yeah the original UT was a landmark. When that came out in November of '99 we had finally gotten DSL which was huge. I played that game non-stop with Counter-Strike. I remember the local cyber-cafe we would play until 4 in the morning. Ahh when I used to be able to stay up that late.

Bill Murphy : Overwatch & Battleborn - WoW and EQ2 Redux

Posted May 25, 2016

Now that they’re both in the wild, the war rages on between fans of Battleborn and Overwatch – two similar (at first glance) games competing for gamers’ attention this summer. While there’s little doubt that Blizzard’s shooter is dominating the marketing airwaves, our own Suzie Ford recently penned a column on why you can love and play both. But for Bill Murphy, there are some obvious parallels to two rival MMOs from 2004…
Read more of Bill Murphy's Overwatch & Battleborn - WoW & EQ2 Redux.
and just how the next few months will play out.

The prediction or observations here will seem grim for fans of Gearbox’s Battleborn, but believe me: there’s nothing wrong with being a fan of a niche game. You’re talking about a former fan site editor for Auto Assault. But let’s not beat around the digital bush here, one game is going to dominate sales, and it’s been clear for months that Blizzard’s Overwatch is that game. I’m not even addressing other similar titles such as Lawbreakers, Paragon, and Paladins in this article. The fates of those games remain to be seen, and again they’re all vastly different experiences but they’re in the same wheelhouse.

Bill-May25-1_t.jpg

Ah, the good ol’ days. No, how I see Battleborn and Overwatch will be familiar to all of you: Battleborn is EverQuest 2. Overwatch is World of Warcraft. Battleborn comes from a studio that’s been developing shooters for years and is seen as the “veteran” of the genre. Overwatch is Blizzard’s first attempt at the shooter. Battleborn pulls from Gearbox’s previous games (especially Borderlands) in tone and mechanics. Overwatch pulls from the best games in the genre while donning Blizzard’s own custom-built IP. Battleborn has a faithful and devoted niche community based on fandom for Gearbox’s previous games. Overwatch has a massive audience, but it’s amazingly built just from fans of Blizzard games in general. Something the Irvine developer has earned over decades.
What will happen next is probably clear to see. Battleborn, a great game in its own way, will see a dwindling player base and will likely go Free to Play after some large discounts (it’s currently sitting at $40 as part of a sale with the launch of a new hero). Meanwhile, for some time into the future, Overwatch will make a mint on box sales, and even the lootcrate sales. I’m betting we’ll see a “10 Million Units Sold” announcement from Blizzard within the month, and Gearbox’s camp will hit around 1 million units. These are just guesses, but again they draw parallels to what we saw with EQ2 and WoW over ten years ago.

Bill-May25-2.jpg

Image courtesy of DigitalCrackNetwork.comBlizzard does something few developers can ever hope to replicate. They take a game, they distill it to its basics, and they polish and iterate until even if it’s “basic” it’s so damned refined that few people can resist its lure. Battleborn is beefier, to be sure. With progression, a full (but limited) PVE campaign, and more heroes and maps already being added you’d think folks would be more drawn to Gearbox’s game. But there’s something working against them, and it’s not something they can even fight: they’re not Blizzard.
Like EQ2 and WoW 12 years behind us, I doubt we’ll still be talking about Overwatch and Battleborn in 10 years’ time. But I’m willing to bet we’ll see more Overwatch games and spinoffs, and quite possibly we’ll still see Overwatch being played by hundreds of thousands of players. Maybe we’ll see a Battleborn sequel, but it’s probably more likely we’ll see more Borderlands games come to fruition beforehand… the RPG shooter is something Gearbox owns by themselves for now. Now if Overwatch: The RPG ever becomes a thing, then we’ll just have to see what happens.

EP Daily Rundown for June 1, 2016
Why did the chicken cross the road? To get a new Rundown, of course! Today we discuss the delay of the ranked competitive mode for Blizzard's Overwatch, have an early look at the latest Skylanders game, find out who might direct the the next James Bond movie, have new details on the X-Men TV series Legion, get an update on the Star Wars spinoff movie Rogue One, and finally, have some bad news for anyone excited to play GTA or other Take-Two games in virtual reality.

Overwatch players are going to have to wait a little longer for one of the game’s most anticipated features.Blizzard has revealed that the game’s ranked competitive mode will not be coming to the PC until mid-to-late July, while the console version doesn’t yet have a release window at all. The ranked competitive mode was included in the closed beta test for the game, but Blizzard says they need more time to polish the final version. For those of you who don’t spend a lot of time playing games online, ranked competitive play is a more intense version of normal PvP that’s based around a system of divisions and tiers, giving players the chance to rank up and collect rewards much faster than normal. Most online games have something like it, so the sooner it comes to Overwatch, the better.

It looks like the toys-to-life genre is alive and kicking. Activision has announced an all-new game in their annual Skylanders series. This one is called Skylanders Imaginators, and the thing that sets it apart is that, for the first time, players will be able to create and customize their own in-game characters. Since this is a toys-to-life game, the creation system will work alongside new toys called Creation Crystals, which are bought in stores and give you the ability to create one character within the game. That character is then tied to that Creation Crystal,

which means players, or their parents, will need to buy a new Crystal everytime they want to make a new character. This is can obviously mean a lot of money Activision, although the toys-to-life genre as a whole isn’t always as lucrative as you might think. Disney recently cancelled their rival franchise Disney Infinity, so the fact that Skylanders is still doing well is good news for fans. Skylanders Imaginators will launch October 16 on consoles and the PC.

A pair of fresh young faces might be joining her majesty’s secret service for the next 007 movie. Last month, reports surfaced that Loki himself Tom Hiddleston is being considered to take over the role of James Bond in the super spy’s next film. Now, Britain’s Radio Times reports that the new film might be helmed by Danish director Susanne Bier. She recently directed Hiddleston in the miniseries The Night Manager, which is also a spy thriller about a British secret agent, so she seems like an obvious choice. If Susanne Bier does end up directing the new Bond film, it would be the first movie in the franchise directed by a woman, which will likely piss off a lot of sexist idiots online.

Keep in mind that no official announcements have been made, and there’s still a chance that Daniel Craig might return as 007 for another mission. We’ll keep you up to date on the latest intel.

The next stage in the evolution of the X-Men franchise is a live-action TV series. FX has officially ordered the new TV series Legion, set in the X-Men cinematic universe. The first season will consist of eight episodes, with the first scheduled to premiere in early 2017.
Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens will play the titular mutant Legion, who, as any Marvel Comics fan will tell you, is a powerful mutant and son of Professor Xavier. He’s sort of an anti-hero who tries to do good, but suffers from dissociative identity disorder, which can make him do bad things. Expect the show to have a more serious tone than the X-Men movies, and since it’s on FX, don’t be surprised if there’s more swearing and violence as well.

This may not be the only live-action X-show on the way. Fox is developing a second one called X-Men Hellfire, but it’s unclear if that will ever be greenlit. It looks like the disturbance behind the scenes of the latest Star Wars adventure isn’t as great as suspected.

Yesterday, rumours surfaced that the spin-off film Rogue One is getting a series of reshoots this summer, with some outlets reporting that Disney is having major problems with the film. That might not be true from a certain point of view. According to The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, the situation isn’t nearly as serious as suspected, and the reshoots are only being done to add a bit more humor. It seems the first cut was a little too dark and had a tone similar to a war drama, which is apparently not the film Disney is looking for.

Keep in mind that most big movies go through reshoots, including last year’s The Force Awakens, so there’s no reason to have a bad feeling about this. There might be yet another reason for the reshoots. There are rumours that the film may include a cameo appearance by a young Han Solo, who’s set to be played by Hail Caesar actor Alden Ehrenreich in his own solo film in 2018. As much as we like Captain Solo, it seems a bit odd that he’d be involved with the Rebel Alliance before the events of the original Star Wars film.
We’ll just have to wait and see what happens. Rogue One drops out of hyperspace this December.Big game franchises like Grand Theft Auto, Borderlands, and XCOM might not embrace virtual reality anytime soon. Speaking at a recent conference, CEO Strauss Zelnick of Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of big game publishers Rockstar and 2K, downplayed the prospects of VR gaming.

He says that virtual reality is just too expensive right now, and most people aren’t going to spend thousands of dollars on an entertainment device that requires its own room. Ouch. He adds that VR might be exciting in the future, but it remains to be seen if it will actually take off.

This seems to cast a lot of doubt on the possibility of big Take Two franchises coming to VR devices. Through their subsidiaries, Take Two controls GTA and Red Dead Redemption, along with Borderlands, XCOM, Civilization, BioShock, Mafia, and all of the 2K sports titles… just to name a few. There are plenty of other titles coming to VR this year, so if the industry does take off, maybe that will change his mind.

picked this up for 35 bucks (gift card for the win!) for ps4

Most fun I've had with an online shooter in a long time, especially when playing with your mates. Only downside is the lack of modes but I know in due time more will come, especially with E3 around the corner. Thankfully there are plenty of maps and the characters are just a lot of fun to learn and to marvel at.

Right now, I'm digging Pharah, starting to really fall in love with Roadhog and attempting to learn the ropes with Genji since for the longest time he was the most frustrating character that I would have to deal with other than Junkrat players who lob grenades from across the map. :o

I have not had the chance to play OW yet but feel free to add me you fellow OW players (note I only have it for PS4). I just recently upgraded to a wired connection so hopefully it will be more better for me online than my wi fi.

EP Daily Rundown for June 6, 2016

In a heavyweight Monday edition of The Rundown, we take a look at the new Saints Row game Agents of Mayhem, find out when you'll get to play Horizon: Zero Dawn, Yooka-Laylee, and a massive new mode for Halo 5, have the latest on Blizzard'sOverwatch, find out if movie audiences are getting sequel fatigue, have the first details on a new Final Fantasy game, find out which Star Wars traitor is going to star in Pacific Rim 2, and finally, have some very super news about Supergirl!

The makers of Saints Row have even more mayhem on the way. Developer Volition has unveiled their latest project, a futuristic, open-world action game titled Agents of Mayhem. It’s not a Saints Row sequel, but does take place in the same universe as the Saints Row games, albeit in the distant future, with players taking the role of Super Agents out to thwart an evil supervillain organization. Since this is the same universe as Saints Row, it will feature the same kind of over-the-top action and humour, although judging by the announcement trailer, it doesn’t seem quite as vulgar. I guess that means you probably won’t be spraying raw sewage on anyone. Agents of Mayhem hits the PS4, Xbox One, and PC next year, and more details will be announced at E3 next week.

Delays are a very common occurrence in the video game industry, so here’s a few new ones. Horizon: Zero Dawn, the new PS4-exclusive from Killzone creator Guerrilla Games, has been pushed back a few months. It was originally announced with a late 2016 release window, but has now set a launch date of February 28, 2017. As with all game delays, the developers need the extra few months to polish what they’ve got and make the game as good as it can be. Horizon: Zero Dawn is a big project. It takes place in the distant future when the world has been overrun by giant, mechanized creatures resembling dinosaurs, and offers a unique blend of futuristic and stone age visuals.

The other delay announced today is the Kickstarted game Yooka-Laylee. It’s been pushed back from October 2016 to the first months of 2017, with the developers citing the same reasons as the makers of Horizon. If you’re wondering why these kind of delays seem to be so common, any game developer will tell you that it’s because games are such big undertakings that it’s impossible at the start of a project to predict exactly how long it will take to finish. That seems fair to us. Yooka-Laylee is a 3D action platformer that’s inspired by the N64 classic Banjo-Kazooie, and is being made by several of the same people.

The biggest expansion yet for Halo 5 is right around the corner. 343 Industries has revealed that the massive Warzone Firefight expansion will deploy at the end of the month. They haven’t named a precise release date yet, but we do know that, like most the other DLC for Halo 5, it will be free. Warzone Firefight is a new mode that’s a combination of the existing Warzone mode and the Firefight mode from previous Halo games, and will see a team of up to eight players join forces to defeat waves of enemies and complete objectives. Teams will need to survive five rounds of increasing difficulty, and there’s also a timer, so you’ll need to work fast. The thing that sets Warzone Firefight apart is its scale; Microsoft says that this will be the biggest co-op experience in Halo history. We can’t wait to play it.

Gamers just can’t get over the idea of cross-platform multiplayer between the PS4 and Xbox One. When asked by fans if the new online shooter Overwatch will ever support cross-platform between the two consoles, developer Blizzard Entertainment says that they’re keeping an eye on the possibility. They haven’t elaborated so it’s unclear just how serious a possibility this is, but we’ve got our fingers crossed that it will happen. PS4 and Xbox One gamers have been craving cross-platform multiplayer ever since the consoles launched, and some game makers, notably Rocket League developer Psyonix, have stated publicly that it’s already possible, and the only hurdle is working out the legal details between Microsoft and Sony. If the two are able to work out a deal, E3 would be the perfect opportunity to announce it… just sayin’. Back to Overwatch, cross-platform between the consoles and PC could be implemented today, but Blizzard says they won’t do it because it’s unfair to make console players with a controller go up against PC players using a mouse and keyboard.

Moviegoers might finally be getting tired of all the sequels, prequels, remakes, reboots, reimaginings, spin-offs, adaptations, and spiritual successors filling up the theatres these days. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel Out of the Shadows was released over the weekend, earning $35 million. That was enough to make it the number one movie at the box office, but it’s well below the opening weekend of the 2014 turtles movie. While it’s true that there’s usually a drop-off in revenue for sequels, TMNT and other recent sequels like X-Men: Apocalypse, Neighbors 2, and Alice Through the Looking Glass have made a lot less than anyone was expecting. Variety and other outlets are reporting that this is causing major concern in Hollywood about the reliability of sequels. Until now, it’s been assumed that if a movie was part of an established brand, it would make a profit, but given recent trends, audiences might be getting sequel and franchise fatigue. If they are, this is a major problem for the studios; every single one of the big movies coming out this summer is either a sequel or remake, or based on an existing property like a comic or game. Hollywood could always end up doing what they use to do: make original movies. That’ll be the day.

And if gamers get sequel and remake fatigue, the makers of Final Fantasy are screwed. Square Enix has announced another remastered version of a classic Final Fantasy game. This one is called Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age, and is an updated version of the original Final Fantasy 12 with better graphics, a re-recorded soundtrack, and several gameplay enhancements. The biggest selling point is that it includes all the improvements to the battle system that were made in the 2007 International Version of the game, which was never actually released in North America, so this will be the first time many western fans will be able to try it. The new Final Fantasy 12 is coming exclusively to the PS4 next year. Square Enix is also working on a highly-anticipated remake of the most popular game in the franchise, Final Fantasy 7. The all-new Final Fantasy 15 launches worldwide on September 30.

A traitor to The First Order is getting a new job on the Pacific Rim. Star Wars: The Force Awakens lead John Boyega is set to star in the sequel to Pacific Rim. He’ll play the son of Idris Elba’s character from the original film, and will hopefully be better at slaying giant monsters than he was at wielding a lightsaber. Pacific Rim 2 doesn’t have a firm release date yet, and shooting will have to be adjusted to accommodate Boyega’s Star Wars schedule, so expect to see it in the next few years. Original director Guillermo del Toro is serving as producer but isn’t returning to the director’s chair. The film will instead be directed by Steven S. DeKnight, who produced the Spartacus series and the first season of Daredevil.

The heroic TV series Supergirl is getting a cameo from an even more famous Kryptonian hero. Warner Bros. Television has revealed that Superman himself will appear in the first two episode of the show’s second season. Yes, we know that Superman has technically already appeared on the show with his face obscured, but now we’ll be able to see all of him, hopefully saving the day alongside his cousin Kara. They’re currently in the process of casting the new small screen version of Superman. Who do you think should play him? Let us know in the comments below. Supergirl was recently picked up for a second season by The CW after former network CBS decided not to pick it up again. It soars back onto the airwaves this fall.

It's been like that since day 1. I flat out REFUSE to play this game without at bare minimum, a party of 4. If I join up with randoms, it's a loss every single time because there's just no team cohesion. Hell I don't even like relying on 2 randoms when I'm in a group of 4.

Korean Overwatch player is cleared of cheating allegations

June 21, 2016 67 Comments

Have you ever met someone in a random Overwatch match and been absolutely certain that they must be cheating, that no one is that good? That’s exactly what happened to a 17-year-old Korean player who goes by the handle of Gegury.

Only she wasn’t in a random match; she was playing in the qualifying rounds of a championship, and she was reported by her opponents, who were certain that she was too good and had to be cheating somehow.

As it turns out, no, she didn’t have to be cheating. She was just that good at playing Zarya (you can find that out in the video down below). Gegury has been cleared of any allegations of wrongdoing, although not before some of her accusers threw tantrums, harassed her, and ragequit when it turned out she was just better than they were.

We all eagerly await when the South Korean government gives her a stompy robot in the video-games-as-training-for-war scenario that would be deeply fitting under the circumstances.
