EP Daily Rundown for June 28, 2016
Today in the Rundown, we head to the Seven Kingdoms for the latest on Game of Thrones, have the first details on a new Harry Potter short story, find out about the delay of Batman: Return to Arkham, get new details on the big screen Minecraft movie, shoot up the latest on Overwatch, have early intel about a new Avatar game, and finally, get some disappointing news about Xbox FitnessGame of Thrones has hit a new high. HBO has revealed that Sunday night’s Season Six finale drew 8.9 million viewers, the highest yet for the series. It’s also almost a million more viewers than last season’s finale, which means Game of Thrones is actually getting more popular as it continues, whereas most shows see their audiences dwindle over time. The fact that the new episodes have overtaken George RR Martin’s novels probably helped; no one knows what’s going to happen, even if you’ve already read the books, so there’s extra incentive to watch. Season Seven is already on the way and is slated to premiere in early 2017. The show will likely come to an end with its eighth season, which will hit the airwaves in 2018.
And over to a less violent fantasy world, fans of Harry Potter can sit back and read a magical new adventure. Harry Potter author JK Rowling has released an all-new short story set within her wizarding world. It’s called Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and tells the story of the young wizard who started the North American version of Hogwarts hundreds of years before the events of the main Harry Potter series. The short story is the second published by Rowling that’s meant to tie-in with the upcoming Potter spinoff movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which will also take place in North America. The story is available now from Rowling’s Pottermore website, and the film will cast a spell on audiences this November.
Batman is running into some major trouble in his latest game release. Warner Bros has delayed the new bundle Batman: Return to Arkham. It was slated to arrive next month, and would have given players new, remastered versions of Arkham Asylum and Arkham City for the PS4 and Xbox One, but now the developers say they need more time to polish everything. Warner Bros hasn’t named a new release window so there’s no telling how much longer we’ll need to wait, but it’s probably a good thing that’s they pushing the date rather than release an unfinished product; the last game in the series, Arkham Knight, was a complete debacle on the PC, filled with game-breaking bugs and glitches that took months of post-launch patches and updates to fix. It looks like the publisher doesn’t want to repeat the same mistakes with Return to Arkham. We’ll let you know when a new release date is named.
Mark your calendars, because we know when movie goers can add Minecraft to their inventory. The big screen film based on the massive sandbox game is scheduled to hit theatres on May 24, 2019. Like other big budget films, the Minecraft movie will be released in 3D and IMAX, and don’t be surprised if there are loads of clever tie-ins with the game. The film is expected to be a combination of live-action with CGI. There’s no word yet on who will star, but we do know that it will be directed by Rob McElhenney, who created and stars in the TV series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. 2019 might seem like a long way off, but it’s coming fast and many other big movies are already slated to be released that year, including Indiana Jones 5, Captain Marvel, and the Lego Movie sequel.
It looks like some of the best online gamers in the world may have chosen a new favorite game. After just one month on store shelves, the new online shooter Overwatch has overtaken the MOBA game League of Legends to become the most-played game in South Korean internet cafes. Online competitive gaming is more popular in South Korea than any other country in the world, so the fact that they’re now playing Overwatch more than League of Legends could indicate that the rest of the world will follow suit. Overwatch isn’t the first big South Korean hit for Blizzard Entertainment; they also developed StarCraft, which South Koreans play more than any other population, especially in the eSports arena. Expect Overwatch to get even more popular when it’s ranked competitive mode launches in the coming weeks.
Gamers will be able to bond with the alien world of Pandora in a whole new way. Marvel Contest of Champions developer Kabam is teaming up with Fox and James Cameron to create a new mobile game based on the blockbuster film Avatar.
It will be a massively multiplayer mobile strategy game set in and around Pandora, with players taking control of the humans, Na’vi, and other alien creatures. It sounds like this won’t be just another crappy mobile game; Kabam says it will have one of the largest development budgets in mobile gaming history, which seems appropriate given that Avatar is one of the biggest films of all time. The game will launch around the same time Avatar 2 hits theatres in 2018, and include content from both films. It will then be updated and expanded with new content based on the remaining three Avatar sequels, which are set to continue rolling out over the next decade. Yes, they’re planning to make no less than four new Avatar movies. I just hope audiences don’t get Pandora fatigue.
Microsoft is ending its bid to keep Xbox One gamers in shape, but they’re keeping the money. The Xbox One launch title Xbox Fitness is coming to an end. Starting today, it’s no longer available to buy, and a year from now, users who’ve already bought it won’t be able to keep playing. Yes, you won’t be able to keep playing a game that you’ve bought. As for why they’re killing Xbox Fitness, the game was never as popular as Microsoft hoped, and they say that it’s become unsustainable. Microsoft hasn’t revealed any plans to offer buyers a refund once the game goes offline, so expect plenty of backlash from angry consumers.
