Question for the techies:

How much better is a Blu Ray player over the X-Box 360 DVD player, which upconverts DVD's to HD? Is it a significant improvement? Or marginal?

Blu-Ray is better than any HDDVD player. Do they even sell HDDVDs anymore?

To put it in simple terms... upconverting isn't true hi-def. If you're playing a regular DVD at 480i or 480p and then popping it in the XBox for upconversion... it's just "filling in" the lines to get 720p.

You get true hi definition with blu-ray discs, it's more "information" with better clarity in the picture. I'm always shocked when people can't see the difference between regular DVD and blu-ray. Then again, a lot of people haven't seen blu-ray and so they just assume regular DVD still "looks great."

Blu Ray blows upconverted DVD's out of the water in audio quality and video resolution. There is just no comparison.

I mainly play my Xbox and I gotta say if you have to pick between a 360 and a blu-ray player for movies, go with the blu-ray player.

I'm not gonna get a PS3, too expensive, but I did see some Sony, Samsung, and Vizio Blu Ray players from $88 - $128

Agreed. Cars is usually the definitive movie where it will make anyone a believer of BluRay.

As for the question above, HDDVD and BluRay are both 1080p capable, so other factors probably play into it. HDTV, et cetera.

As far as up converting, If you're going to watch a regular DVD because you already have it, then whatever. But it is a pretty good joke. Up convert, heh.

If by too expensive, you mean too cheap. Yes. It is really underpriced for what you get.

It's not HDDVD, it's an upconverter that converts DVD to HD.

My TV is 32" 720p if that makes a difference.

Oh hell, we're talking about an up converting dvd player?

****ing no brainer then. BLU RAY FTMFW!

Blu Ray Player>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>up converting dvd player

It's not worth $300 or $400 or whatever it is now. Not to me. Especially when I can get a Blu Ray player for $88 - $128

Blu-ray player is definitely better picture quality than an up-converted DVD.

Even for a 720p TV?

One of my friends told me that on a 720p, I'm not going to get a significant improvement over the X-Box with a Blu Ray.

Hmm if it's a 720p TV then I guess that's a slightly different story. What resolution does the Xbox upscale the picture to?

And I must point out that different DVD players or an Xbox in this case has different "upscalers". So a DVD being upscaled on one player may not look the same as a DVD being upscaled on another player.

go ahead and buy a HD-DVD player for your 360. that way whenever you decide to get a tv that can display 1080p and want the latest, greatest movies in HD you'll be stuck wondering why you didn't just buy a blu-ray player in the first place.

That's the key though, to you, but it actually is still very much worth the cost and as stated below, often you can find deals on it through rebates and such.

I got mine almost two years ago, when they were more expensive than they are now and got a slim for $250.

I think Sony is still losing money on them, that or breaking even now.

That's because you're friend is dumb. Truth. Fact. And if you're tv is 720p it most likely 1080i which is still very damn good, as it 720p. Hell converted movies that are compressed into 520 still look pretty damn good.

I have a Sony 1080i/720p and it's an LCD projection and it still looks great. You're friend doesn't know what h e's talking about.

If by latest you mean.....discontinued and no longer supported, sure.

Y'know I bet if you go to a Best Buy or something they can set up a comparison and you can decide which quality you can live with; But there's no argument when it comes to blu-ray superiority.

Word, ****ing Sony, I hate em and love my PS3. I don't even really play games on it. Ugh, stupid Sony, I swore I would never buy one. Oh well, at least I held out and got a great deal.

At least until...well if...red ray comes out in a movie format. But I have a feeling there is not going to be anymore physical media formats from now on.

haha yeah I've had a PS3 since launch and it's pretty much just my blu-ray player too. anyhow more and more things are available digitally so I wouldn't be surprised if physical formats become obsolete in the next couple decades, maybe even sooner.

btw blue is the upgrade from red. :o
