Borat 2 Coming After Bruno

Source: Financial Times
February 8, 2007

Financial Times reports that Rupert Murdoch, chairman and chief executive of News Corporation, has revealed that Sacha Baron Cohen will do a "Borat" sequel at the company's 20th Century Fox after he completes Bruno for Universal Pictures.

Cohen will next play fashion victim alter ego Bruno from "Da Ali G Show." Murdoch said Fox was not prepared to outbid other studios for Bruno because Cohen would not show the script.

After the film is done, Cohen will "come back and do Borat 2," Murdoch said during an interview at a conference in New York.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan was made for just $18 million and earned $248 million worldwide.

Yeah Sasha said "Borat is now dead, it will never work like it did in the first film"

Yeah, I thought he said he killed the Borat character. This is a bad idea, anyway.

You saw the effects of fame on the jackass people they didnt pull as many stunts on the public (best part about Jackass), because half the world knew who they were, thats what the trips to india and japan were for.

They'll just do it without Cohen and make it DTV. It seems to be the next trend in Hollywood.

Do we really need a sequel to something as dumb as Borat?

These studio's are just turning into cheap ****es making a sequel out of anything that makes money.

Some guy assaulted Borat for harrassing him in NYC thinking he was a real guy while the movie was making the rounds in theaters. Plenty of people still don't know who he is.

But yes, I agree, bad idea.

Cohen's made it clear he won't do Borat again. I think it's Murdoch talking out of his ass.

Borat? Dumb? It's quite possibly one of the best thing to happen to the comedy film in years, and it made such a huge profit. I agree that making a sequel would be a horrific idea, but that doesn't make Borat dumb.

Now Fantastic Four is a different story...

irony's a beautiful thing, isn't it? :D

Last month, we noticed social media reports about Sacha Baron Cohen shooting something in Los Angeles as one of his most beloved characters, and today Collider can exclusively report that Borat 2 has already been shot and even screened for a select few industry types.

Plot details remain vague, but what we know is that Borat is no longer the little-known Kazakh TV personality he played in the original 2006 movie. The public knows who he is now, so he has to go “undercover” to interview people. One source described the film as “Cohen playing Borat playing Cohen,” but since we published this story, another source reached out to refute that description while still confirming the project’s existence.

It’s unclear who is paying for the sequel, but it wouldn’t surprise us if Borat 2 was being financed by a deep-pocketed streamer. After all, 20th Century Fox released the first film, but the Disney-owned studio is unlikely to be prioritizing R-rated comedies in the midst of the pandemic. The film was based on pre-existing IP created by Cohen, so it’s also possible that he has retained ownership over the character and is free to do with it as he pleases.

Larry Charles directed Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, which Cohen produced alongside Jay Roach. It’s unclear whether Charles or Roach are involved with the sequel, or when the film will be made available to the public. Some believe it will be released prior to the election in an effort to reach younger voters.

Borat grossed $262 million worldwide, which paved the way for other Cohen movies like Bruno ($138 million) and The Dictator ($179 million), though neither was able to replicate the same box office success. We’ll report additional details as they’re revealed, but our understanding is that this project is a full-fledged feature, rather than part of a series or ad campaign.

Representatives for Cohen and Roach did not respond to requests for comment. Earlier this summer, Cohen trolled attendees at an alt-right rally while in disguise, and you can click here for more on that story. We’ll update you with more on Borat 2 as we get it…
Exclusive: 'Borat 2' Has Already Been Shot and Screened by Sacha Baron Cohen

Aroo?

Well this is unexpected and random as hell, especially in this day and age. Am I the only who thinks the first Borat was insanely overrated though? I didn't hate it, but I still don't understand how that movie became such a phenomenon back in 2006.

I loved it...when I first saw it.
It came out in middle school and it was a moment. But I've tried to watch it 2 or 3 times since then. Once you know what's gonna happen it's not as funny. The outlandishness and unexpected stuff was the funniest element.

It's been a while (10+ years). Might try and rewatch the first.

I was in Middle School as well at that time, but after seeing something like Jackass: Number Two in a theater it really takes a lot to shock me and I just didn't think it was all that crazy or shocking, but definitely random.

Knew something was up when those pics of Sacha Baron Cohen dressed in the suit and sporting the mustache popped up a while ago. Definitely interested in seeing this.

Borat was one of the funniest theatre experiences I ever had. I haven't seen it in maybe a decade, but there are moments I haven't forgotten. I admire Sacha Baron Cohen and the risks he takes. He's extremely talented.

That said, post-Borat I haven't really laughed at any of his later stuff (ie. Bruno, The Dictactor, Grimsby).

I did like him in supporting roles like in Sweeney Todd, Hugo and Talladega Nights. As for a Borat 2? ... why not? Borat is his most memorable character. Not sure if that kind of comedy fits in 2020, but again, why not? Like Tom Cruise risking his life for stunts, I'll see Cohen risk his life for comedy.

What? Seriously, what? No, Sasha, bad. Bad.

Love the first one, but feels like such a mistake to revisit it somehow. Seems so cynical too, it just reeks of "Brothers Grimsby sucked, I had fun with Who Is America, better go revisit the real-world pranking stuff again, people eat that up". Which is a shame, always felt Cohen has way more possibilities up his sleeve than just the Borat/Bruno/Ali G schtick (great as it is).

Broaden his horizons, do something else. Especially given he could barely even do the voice anymore on that Kimmel bit a couple years back, he sounded so off.

I guess he may have something particularly crazy up his sleeve to justify doing this, wouldn't count Sasha out in that respect, but can't help feel he should probably keep the original three characters retired. If he wants to keep doing the messing-with-people-out-in-the-world thing, cool, but maybe cook up a new guy for it, half of those Who Is America characters were awesome. Erran Morad and the PBS jackass guy and the Finnish streamer dude ruled.

Was watching The Dictator a couple of weeks back though, forgot just how crazy funny that one is. Can't for the life of me figure how he followed that thing up with the soccer hooligan flick, barely got a handful of chuckles out of Grimsby.
