Bought/Thought 4/2 Secret Invasion Edition

David's run on the book was pretty short (unfortunately).

What they are doing to Cyclops is almost like an adolescent power-fantasy. Blasting rockslide may be becoming more of a running joke (like Jazz getting thrown out of the mansion) but I don't really see that with his character. Protracted fights with Xavier and optic blasting people and my-way-or-the-highway-I'm-large-and-in-charge isn't leadership. It is bullying. Not only do I not like that (as a person), that isn't who cyclops is. He was selected to be a leader because he is a good person even if it hurts him, because he is intimately aware of his own moral failings and such. That is Cyclops. While some writers have had bouts of characterizing him like that they are bouts. That isn't the character. I'm tired of that. Brubaker did this nasty retcon right after House of M and made Xavier a bad guy, Whedon had Cyclops get a little angsty and show some balls and also made xavier a bad guy so now everyone wants to play this up. It's getting a little old in my mind.

I'm not a huge fan of the morally gray Cyclops myself, but I figure if they're gonna do it, they may as well go for broke on it and make a decent character arc out of it. Sort of like how Genis-Vell started out trying to be a real stand-up hero, then went insane from the pressure, then finally pulled himself back together and found a sort of balance that he could work with.

Really? It seemed longer to me. I did continue reading it after Mackie took over and added Shard and Forge to the mix.

Was he writing Havok during X-Cutioner's song? Because if so, you're right. Havok was great in that story.

Didn't Mackie write that one? The precusor/inspiration to Exiles? I recall the Goblin Queen and Blood Storm were featured and Havok lived out his lifelong fantasy of screwing Jean in one form or another.

I started reading it again when David got on and maybe bought a couple after he left and then had to let it go...

He did a fill in back in the day, but his run was 21 issues (#70-90), according to Wikipedia.

Yeah, that's why I wondered why you singled Havok out.

This story will simply provide another oppurtunity for his heroes to be inept, to in-fight, to act like desperate crybaby children, for some figure to lecture them about it, and then for them to prevail through luck or outside intervention. Or, for this to simply lead into another story and have a sucky ending, like CIVIL WAR. And he will determine which characters need his "almighty skill" to "save" from "past bad stories", with his opinions on what those are being counter to people who genuinely LIKE superheroes, rather than shock value monkies like Bendis who think superheroes need "fixing". At a time when even Mark Millar preeches about "creating" or "bringing characters together again", here comes another "trust no one because everyone, especially your best friend, is your worst enemy" storyline. I am ****ing tired of those kinds of stories.

Is there a chance Bendis will write against type? That he will actually provide some arc of genuine heroism and victory over adversity, with characters being smart and mature, and unifying for a common goal and evolving beyond all their petty ****? Sure, there is a chance. But I ask you; what are the odds, the chances, of Bendis writing a story that he has never written before, in some form or the other, with a theme he has never used before? He is all about heroes failing, falling, being inept, petty, vile, common, and stupid.

Of course. That's why he's so successful at Marvel. All of those two paragraphs have been the Marvel game plan since square one.

That's awesome to hear, I wasn't sure anyone else even knew that comic existed. That "Flowers for Algernon" issue with the Brute was one of my favorite single comic issues ever.

I didn't read the whole series, I guess I should confess. I did like what I read, though. Can't remember why I didn't follow it more closely. Probably money issues.

Okay, been a little busy, time to post some Secret Invasion thoughts!

LOVED the first issue. Seriously, just awesome. The art was fantastic, the story moves at a brisk pace, and the threat feels really intimidating. I'm really looking forward to seeing who was replaced when and where, although I think we can figure out when Dugan was.

I think Bendis really nailed why I love the New Avengers with this issue. Cage is a really great leader, and I loved seeing his team steal a Quinjet after calling on Cloak. This team is just plain bold.

All in all, I cannot wait for issue 2!
