Bought/Thought 8/15

Just curious, why do you think Annihilus is sending Phyla after Kang? I can understand the aspect of the wild goose chase, that he is manipulating her into going after something or someone beneficial to him, but why did you pick Kang? I didn't notice a dropped hint and was just wondering if I missed something.

Well, we know that the true villian is yet to be revealed. We also know that, so far, AC follows the same formula as Annihilation almost to a "T". The "Conquest" part of the AC name would correspond to the villian, if we're still following the original Annihilation formula. No one fits that bill besides Kang the Conqueror.

As far as being a wild goose chase, I'm not so sure. I mean, I'm sure removing Phyla from the action while the Phalanx take down the rest of the heroes is certainly a plus, I think Annihilus really just wants Phyla to find Kang, plain and simple. Kang is pretty much the time travel guy in the MU. I think Annihilus has a deal for Kang, in exchange for some time traveling back to the past to "undead" him. Perhaps Annihilus offers up the sheer limitless number of Negative Zone troops at Kang's disposal. It could go a number of ways. Bottom line is that I'm fairly certain Kang factors into this.

For the record, I never said he didn't contribute every week. Just wondering why PJ has been such a crotchety pants is all.

And I'm wondering why you have such a hard on for me.

Because you aren't such a poop head most of the time! Maybe someone needs a hug? ;p

Yes, troll. That's me.

I guess I'll just throw an "I know you are but what am I" so we're operating on the same level.

I actually picked up Booster Gold as an impulse buy. I don't buy much DC, not because I don't like their stuff, but because I know I'd be doubling my budget pretty quickly. I got this one because a) I've always liked Dan Jurgens art and b) I've always liked Boosters gaudy costume. I know it's a stupid reason to buy a comic, but as many others have pointed out to me, I'm subscribed to Wolverine: Origins for God's sake! Hopefully, I won't have to know too many DC going-ons to understand the story. (And please God, let my buying end here. I've got a mortgage.)

Since it's a Bought/Thought, I'll throw in:

Terror Inc #1- I liked it. I know almost nothing of this character outside of what was revealed in MTU (see how that title was a great seeding ground. I never would have bought this title otherwise.) Interesting origin, with a very modern/snarky "voiceover." I was wondering if he could replace his face/head, and here I got to find out. I'm not hoping for this to turn into a series or anything, but I would like to see characters like him, Morbius, Deathlok, Man-Thing, etc to become more prominent fixtures in the MU.

I keep hearing good things about Terror Inc. Hmmmm, maybe I'll snag it today.

Countdown #37
Again, almost picked this up...but managed to stop myself just in time. Not a bad issue, comparatively. The art is pure abhorrent sht, but hey, I've read the Super-Skrull mini; I can take it.

I did like Zatanna here and her rockin' crib
f9515c4d7449d37d098c501293bdb83a9de8bd9.gif
. Piper and Trickster with Poison Ivy was actually pretty funny if you look past the fact that it makes no sense at all (Ivy is mad that they...ate her fruits? But...but fruits are supposed to be eaten, that's how the trees reproduce...am I supposed to just chalk this up as "she's crazy" or something?). And oh yeah, kthxbye for spending most of the last two issues getting Karate Kid and Una to talk with Oracle and then spending half of this issue telling us that it served absolutely no point whatsoever since, oddly enough, a woman from a millenium ago doesn't know about the future virus plaguing K. Kid. Huh. Imagine that.

...okay I guess it actually was that bad. Something does actually happen what with that ending where Jimmy tries to rape Clark, though, which is...something.

Quasar #2
Man, everyone's got issues.

It's surprising to me that Phyla and Heather are very obviously in love and yet never seemed to have confided a lot of significant details of their past to each other. The whole cosmic awareness thing and the Dragon of the Moon thing...I would've thought these things would be common knowledge in the MU, too, something most people are at least a little aware of. But I guess they just don't get wikipedia or Marvel Handbooks in outer space. I really like this book and I really like these people. More, thanks.

Justice League of America #12
I am going to miss Meltzer. He had some good stuff, some good ideas -- it's completely unfair that he got burdened with the Lightning Saga which, in retrospect, was a giant waste of time for everyone involved -- and I feel like he's leaving us with a whole slew of unfinished stories just as he was getting started. I'm really interested in Geo-Force's story, and I don't feel like McDuffie will be following up on that at all. Stuff with Roy and Kendra, with Mari, with Jeff...if anything, this issue just showed us how much good stuff was not being resolved by Meltzer and will likely never be resolved. And on that note, I cannot possibly see how Jeff is not being a complete ****** right here, what with him pretending to have an in with Luthor to have an in with villains. That's just ******ed on levels there are not even words for.

It's interesting what Meltzer points out about Hal...that he's the only "true" original on the team right now, aka an original both in the sense of the silver age and in terms of post-Crisis Year One. I love the beginning and ending, really tying things together. Meltzer does great nostalgia, at the least. And I'm really glad about Aquaman returning here. As I said otherwhere, I much rather prefer he return in this series than in the current Aquaman title which sucks. And it was a genuinely nice surprise to see him with J'onn. Both characters have really been shafted by DC lately and it's nice to see these two old friends still hanging on together.

Booster Gold #1
"Don't worry about Countdown -- focus elsewhere"
"It's residual damage from Mr. Mind's feast on time and space and super-brat's whining."

Oh Christ...I laughed so hard.

This is the book for DC fans who hate DC right now. This is where the continuity happens. This is where the fun is. This is where you'll find WORM ON MAN ACTION. Well, someday.

The gimmick of Booster never getting to receive credit for his good deeds sounds amazing and ingenius and all that, but...it's also something that I'll probably get really tired of really quickly. "Wow, who was the mysterious stranger who saved our time?" "Certainly not me! No, the man you want to thank is...over there, by the bushes! And his name is most certainly not Booster Gold!" We'll see how Johns works it.

That ending and those preview images...whoa. Nice.

Points are taken off, however, for Grandma Carter being an investigative reporter. Seriously? We haven't had enough red-hot female investigative reporters in the DCU yet?

Flash #231
Love it. Pretty much completely love it.

I'm sure there are people out there who simply cannot stand reading about anyone under the age of seventeen or something, but I've never had that problem, and I love these kids. Yes, I said that I loved them. As in
emot-pedo.gif
. That's right.

I am a bit unsure about Linda all of a sudden being a megascientist -- wasn't she a reporter the last time we saw her? -- but she's not nearly a character that I'm so involved with so ultimately it's no big deal. And she's Asian so, y'know, it's obviously in her genes or something
emot-pseudo.gif
. But seriously, folks.

I do love the way she and Wally are together. An actual nuclear family (heheh) that doesn't have issues (yet)? Let's see how long DC takes before this all gets screwed up!

Next up, tentacle rape. Well, maybe it won't take that long.

Black Canary #4
FYI, Bedard...Connor was eighteen when Ollie reunited with him, not twenty:cmad:.

Okay, I think I like it, but I think I hate it. I'm annoyed that Sin has now basically been put on a bus, which is preferable than killing her off, certainly, but also certainly less preferable than *gasp* actually attempting to write interesting stories with her in the picture. She was a fascinating progression in Dinah's character and now she's just...gone. Not gone like dead, but gone like gone. Basically this entire story is that Dinah tried to make life work for herself with a foster daughter and she tried to make life work for Sin...but she failed miserably. Yeah, not the most uplifting arc.

On the other hand, I can't really find fault with the story and writing itself; both were solid. A lot of people have apparently gotten pissed that Dinah agreed to marry Ollie even though he manipulated and hurt her "for her own good"...or, rather, because he did so. I think that's really overexaggerating things. It was a cold dick move, but the basic logic behind the plan was pretty reasonable. It's not like the Sin's gone from her forever, anyway; it worst the situation is comparable to a boarding school. She's going to Hogwarts! Dinah immediately going "Oh, okay" about it is a bit unrealistic, but what's she going to be angry for? The fact that Ollie just guaranteed Sin's safety for the foreseeable future? He didn't do it for himself, or for Dinah even; he did it for Sin. Dinah would understand and respect that. Maybe not immediately, which is something that threw me, but sooner or later.

Up next is the wedding. Ooooboy. Brace for impact? Yeah, brace for impact.

Amazons Attack #5
...What? I mean...what?

So...is Grace a Bana or isn't she? Was it a lie or something? Do the Banas actually hate the Themyscirans or was it a ploy? The entire point of this series has been "Strange things are happening, nothing makes sense, you don't know why, and we're not telling you. Keep reading!"

Y'know my favorite part? "You might be fast enough so stop me, Superman...BUT ARE YOU SURE????" Btch, plz, Superman could melt your weapon, freeze your face, give you a wedgie, piss in your hair, and write a blog entry in less time than it takes a single electrical impulse to go from your meager brain to your meager neurons. He just doesn't in this comic because everyone's been turned into ******s, see.

Brave and the Bold #6
Heh, I love the fact that there's an ad in this book for Superman and Wonder Woman...MONTHLY! YES THAT'S RIGHT! We're actually printing out these books ON TIME now! Except that Simone's Wonder Woman has already been delayed a month. But seriously folks.

This is essentially organized chaos, and good organized chaos. Not only that, but it's good organized chaos that's readable. Perez's art can be a chore to go through, but the action and the story is breezy enough that it won't matter. Characterization is pretty on, and there are some nice surprises and moments throughout. All in all, a good book; nothing great, but pretty damn good all the same. And, hey, if you absolutely need to see Supergirl get penetrated this week, this would be the place.

Next up: Perez draws Wonder Woman, which sucks me onboard like sperm onto ovaries.

Linda was a reporter, but she left that career to study medicine in the hopes of becoming a pediatrician. She was actually enrolled at Central City Medical School when the whole Infinite Crisis and subsequent ******ation concerning all things Wally happened.

My insecurity knows no bounds.

It's like the Marvel equalivent to BETTY AND VERONICA. Men just don't read it, and those that do should hide in shame. Of course, I'm also a straightlaced prude. :o

Don't bring Archie into this argument. We all know Archie's gay, and Peter Parker isn't gay. Your point, my friend, is moot.

Ultimate Spider-Man -- what is up with Kitty's mask? Looks like she bought a hat too big for her head.

Justice League of America -- Nice issue with great covers. They should pare down to 7, 12 seems too many. There is zero logic of having Hawkgirl, Black Canary or Red Arrow over Martian Manhunter. MM is one of the most powerful forces in the entire DC world.

The entire issue was just one huge set up that one day both Aquaman (who's currently dead in his book) and J'onn will return to the Justice League. Also, a big Justice League is cool. But they really need to ditch Hawkgirl and Vixen for some Martian Manhunter and Aquaman.

Hell, Booster Gold #1 pretty much spoiled that they'll both be back by Final Crisis.

Except not really. It seems that always during a Crisis some of the big guns and some nobodies run around calling themselves the League.

Meh, it's a necessary evil so that the next time a huge creator comes along and rebuilds them around the Big Seven, it'll feel fresh and innovative again.

I think the Final Crisis preview was showing Booster with his old Justice League, wasn't it? J'onn's wearing his old costume. I don't remember if Aquaman was ever in the JLI, but that's the costume he wore during that period.

Bah! BW asked a question and I answered! Plus I was swooning for the JLI again, sorry about that.:(

Brave & The Bold #6 - Like a lot of others here, I don't get many DC books anymore (though I used to and I'm still very knowledgable with the DCU), but this one has been a "must buy" since issue #1, and I must admit that the first arc was one fun read. The story clicked together the way Waid can do it and Perez's art was simply a pleasure to read. It's unfortunate that this book won't last 25 issues as people don't like to read this kind of "fun comics" anymore, but this ol'timer will enjoy it while it lasts.

10/10

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #23 - It's the book we've all been waiting for since the unmasking... the Peter Parker/J.Jonah Jameson confrontation and Peter David delivers in spades with spot-on characterizations on all fronts. Some will say (myself included) that there could have been so much more said between the two, but that would take a 12 issue maxi-series to complete, yet enough was said to satiate my palate. This book has been gold since it's inception (excluding The Other & the future Ben Parker timeline stories, which were "meh" at best), and it's unfortunate that it will go the way of the dodo after next issues "One More Day" tie-in. Nonetheless, David will always be a premiere Spider-Writer in my eyes.

9/10

:yay:

Yup, it was Waid. I sometimes get him and Busiek confuzzled too, to be honest. It's Alex Ross' fault, like most things are.

Captain America 29: great issue ,bucky finally finds out(at least its hinted) that lunkin and skull are one and the same. and the oragnization of the chapters in this issue really keeps the pace moving, proving again brubakers amazing writing talents. widow'schracterization, along with the storyline involving sharon and sam are all great.

10/10.

Brave and the bold #6: this issue mademe quizzy, its a good story but the timetraveling thing and the sequentials made my stomach hurt. the artain't bad but it felt like i was on an acid trip.

7.5/10

Do I want to write a review? As BrianWilly would write, why, btch plz, I sure do.

Spike: Shadow Puppets #3 - by Brian Lynch and Franco Urru, who will both (if I remember correctly) be working on Season Six of Angel, which has me in all kinds of happy dance moods.

When last we left our heroes (heroes being Spike and Lorne, along with Beck, Betta George, and Tok - these three being creations of Lynch's and not necessarily canonical unless they later become canonical, and Betta George, by the by, is a floating, telepathic fish, and quite adorable) they had been poofed by the giant, glowing egg that I can only assume to be the power source of the evil, soul-sucking puppets (I didn't read the Angel mini in which he fought against said puppets), and had been turned into "wee little puppets," as Spike would put it. That is, Spike, Lorne, and Betta George. Beck and Tok are still normal. And FYI, Spike is (currently) a puppet vampire with a soul, Lorne is (currently) a green song-and-dance demon with impeccable wordage, Beck is a "firestarter" (as in, one who can make flames, and thus not as lame as Pyro) and was saved by Spike, who she now idolizes, in the previous mini, and Tok is a female ninja. They're in Japan, where female ninjas that enjoy kicking supernatural booty reside. And Betta George is, well, see above.

These are the same evil, soul-sucking puppets (working through the television, and stealing the souls of children who watch the puppet show Smile Time) from the aforementioned Angel mini I did not read. Since Angel beat them out of America, they've gone back to Japan in an attempt to start small and take that country over. Spike's been hired anonymously by Beck to be the champion, his reason for going mostly to trump Angelcakes. And Lorne went along for some time off.

It obviously doesn't happen canonically after the end of Season Five, but hey, the forthcoming maxi-series-else-ongoing-series of Angel Season Six more than makes up for that. What Shadow Puppets is is a fun read written by a guy who has an obvious feel for his characters, both established characters and new creations, full of Lorne-quips and Spike-taunts and -lines. And, well, seeing Spike running around as a puppet with a ripped-off arm (courtesy of Lorne) is priceless.

I took a chance on this mini way back on issue one, actually picking it up a week after it came out, but they've been consistently fun. And next issue, we'll see PVP - yes, Puppet vs. Puppet, as the evil mastermind behind Smile Time debuts the leader of his ninja puppet army (yes, did I mention there are ninja puppets? After all, it's Japan)... pretty much Angel Puppet 2.0, as in, ANGELUS puppet, who yells "Bring on Spike! Our battle will be the stuff of legend and fan-fiction!"

Darn skippy.

It's interesting what Meltzer points out about Hal...that he's the only "true" original on the team right now, aka an original both in the sense of the silver age and in terms of post-Crisis Year One.

I don't get it. Wonder Woman was there in the silver age right?
