Alright Hype I'm finally back in the States, so I get my comics on time (not a day-2 days late).
Small week for me this week, but I bought Cap and JLA. Oh, and when I say "book" I mean "issue."
Captain America- 6/10 (good, not great).
I still think good things are in store for the arc, but I also think it is time to finish it. My main problem with this stretch of Brubaker's run is he seems to have forgotten that we get one comic, once a month. As a result, issue to issue, I'm not really excited. I think the pacing of each event within the comic is fine-- every piece of dialogue is wonderfully maximized, and the characterization is excellent. But the pacing on the whole, when read in context of an issue, is getting to be too slow. I'd like more to happen, and soon. I really don't want a year's worth of cat and mouse.
My next problem is one of those logic problems that pops up when you're no longer in love with a book, a nasty example of applying real world reasoning where it doesn't always belong. I really can't picture Tony Stark worried about Bucky coming to kill him, I don't see why anyone who knows Tony would be worried that Bucky is coming to kill him... he's Iron Man. I'm surprised he didn't just go get him. Also, is Black Widow really the only person he can send after Bucky? She's really cool and all, but I mean, you can't also have Ms Marvel or someone fly around a bit? I'm pretty sure any superhero would be willing to help hunt for Cap's killer. This hunt is a little over-dramatic don't y'think?
It's still a good series, and if you're reading Cap you can't miss the issue. I would just like it to speed up. This will probably be an excellent year long trade.
JLA-- 5/10 (not bad, not good).
In the end I didn't like Meltzer's run. Aside from his sometimes confusing narratives (never thought I'd say that about a comic), his choice of plots was just off. This is more or less a day in the life in the watch-tower, and he basically takes this issue to tell you what you more or less already know about the JLA members, more exposition on who the characters are (as if we don't already know, and as if he hasn't already done this before). There are one or two neat moments that save the book from being bad, but nothing that makes it a book that you have to buy, even if you are reading JLA. (There is a semi-important reveal, but if just want to know you could just ask Hype really). I really wanted to like his run, but overall, I couldn't.
You don't have to buy this one. It certainly isn't a bad book, but it isn't good either.
