Bought/Thought for September 28, 2011 - SPOILERS

I dropped all of my comics in July and have been suckered back in for some of the new 52. I'm not even sure yet I'll pick up any #2's. They'll be sparse, if I do and I'm dropping after the first arc.

Just finished reading all of my DC comics; and, while I don't have enough time to review them, I thought All-Star Western was HANDS DOWN the best of the bunch. I didn't even have to think about it. If you loved Batman: Gates Of Gotham, this book has the same feel, as it tells of when Jonah Hex came to Gotham in 1880. At first I rolled my eyes; but, the storytelling was fantastic. I almost though Snyder had wrote this book! Fantastic!!!

My worst isn't as easy. Quite a few of the titles that came out I didn't really enjoy. I hated how Flash and Firestorm has started over, and especially thought Manapul should stick to drawing. For that matter, Green Lantern: New Guardians didn't do much for me. Again, we get a Green Lantern title that focuses on an Earthling more than any other. (That's what makes Red Lanterns such a nice change of pace, and my favorite of the four Lantern titles.) Are they starting Kyle over, while the rest of the Green Lantern universe is still the same?? (This DC universe makes zero sense.) Teen Titans almost did the same thing. Everything in Batman's universe is almost the same, but I guess not Red Robin. As usual, this Teen Titans has no connection between the members.
I don't think Kyle's starting over. That first part of the issue was just a recap of his origin, and it looks pretty much the same as it always has.

As for All-Star Western, isn't that by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti? They got a ton of critical praise from their Jonah Hex series a couple years ago. Seems like All-Star Western is a continuation of that in spirit if not in name, so it's not surprising it was so good. (Although I didn't read it because I don't really care much for western comics.) :ninja:

Flash #1 Great book. Beautiful looking, good solid storytelling. I dig this alot and this is coming from someone who never cared for Flash at all. I'm gona stick around for this.

Dark Knight #1 Ugh. That is all.

Mighty Thor #6 This is just...this is just....I'm sure TheCorpulent can back me up on this but this just isn't good. Coipel draws pretty pictures but the story and dialogue destroyed this for me. Thor+Silver Surfer+Galactus+Coipel SHOULD equal an automatic homerun but this arc has been s***. Yes i said it, its absolute s***. This isn't Thor, its some carbon, cloned copy wearing Thor's skin. I'm sorry Corp but i kept holding out hope that there was a reason for the crazy, manic behavior going on in this book between Thor, the Asgardians, Surfer and Odin but I'm pretty sure Fraction is just doing whatever the f*** he wants at this point. And honestly, I would have been HAPPY if this was a simple "Galactus has gone out of control now Thor and the Surfer must team up to stop him" kind of story. But this ended being some sort of weird, contrived, uncharacteristic piece of garbage story. Call me when Fraction's off this book and we'll talk.

I read the entire series of Jonah Hex by Palmiotti and Gray; and, this is even better than any of those previous issues.

So why'd you roll your eyes if it's the same creators and the same character from a series you already know you loved? The Gotham connection?

As a Hellblazer reader I'll say that while it's not terrible, Milligan's run has been very matter of fact.

I don't really read Hellblazer, but with his other stuff like Shade, The Changing Man, Engima, Extremis, his Batman run and X-Force/X-Statix (the latter two obviously aren't Vertigo, but they both have Vertigo-esque bends), I think the praise he gets is pretty warranted. I rarely see him get that praise, or much noteworthy, though, which is why I find it odd anyone could really find him 'overrated'. I could maybe understand if he had a strong internet fanbase, but he doesn't really seem to have even that, most of the time.

And also, didn't he marry Constantine off and been playing the character off in a much light-hearted tone than usual? I don't know, doesn't really sound all that matter of fact to me.

Personally I love Milligan's Hellblazer. Sure I thought it took awhile to find it's legs but 's been pretty fun and wacky. The only problem that I've had with it is Constantine is way too Dr. Strange when it comes to magic use. A story from the perspective of John's trenchcoat is good in my book.

Honestly, I'm expecting it to end badly. Throughout the book's history, every writer has given John a lady to make him seem like less of a bastard and by the end of the run they take her away because John pulled a scum bag stunt and effed it up.

I like Epiphany but I can see he leaving the book when Milligan does. The same with Ennis and Kit, Carey and Angie (who was my favorite and I miss her a lot) and sso on and so forth. There's a lot of tension with John and Piffy's mobster dad, so I can see that boiling over in Milligan's last arc.

They're all great. John is like James Bond in regards to his women. Every writer brings their own female to match wits with him. You can argue that they are more fun to read than him at times. You want to see how each new one introduced is going to deal with his bulls**t. The only recent writer that didn't follow this formula was Azzarello (and I loved loved loved that run), he used FBI agent Frank Turro instead.
