BOUGHT/THOUGHT June 6, 2007

Either way, I think it was a great read as a trade. It's lateness will cause many to avoid it short term, but it's one of the best Daredevil stories I've read outside of Miller and Bendis.

To be fair, everything reads better in a trade. You don't have the time gap that cuts into the flow of everything.

I have to agree with Darthphere. Anyway I don't want comics about the deceased parents of superheroes to become a regular thing.

Yeah, it's a strange concept for a mini. I was surprised by how much i liked it.

Black Summer #0 - If you're a Republican, a fiscal conservative, a neo-con, a social conservative, a capitalist, a religious person, a Bush fan or just plain old pro-war, then don't read this. You would do well to just pretend like it does not exist and do not even think about.

But if you're not one of those things...you need to pick this up. It's spectacular.

Geez,I didn't know this was coming out so soon.I've been looking forward to this.I thought it was coming out the same month as Doktor Sleepless.

Caselli's art is hit and miss for me.I feel that if this series were given an artist with a more subtle approach,it would really be a bonus.

I'm all for different styles of art,but his cartoon-like pencils with the flat coloring are hard to swallow at times.

Scalped #6 - This continues to be one of the best comics currently being published. It's one of those books that when you're reading it, you can easily see it being worked into a TV show. Granted, this would have to be air on HBO or Showtime.

Issue six is the start of a new arc, and it looks like it'll be dealing with Dash finding out about the other undercover FBI agent on the Res. My guess is whoever the other guy is, he's not making it out of town alive. I'm also assuming Dash'll come to find out about his mother's death at the conclusion of last issue.

Such potty mouths these Native Americans are.

Warren Ellis is a weird dude.......

It's just a preview issue, so you're not missing a whole lot if you can't find it. I'd recommend you do try to locate a copy, though. It's very, very good.

I like the animated feel. I think it's cool to see various characters illustrated in different styles. That said, I don't like Caselli's Ben Grimm. He just looks off to me.

Countdown #47

Okay, this issue felt a whole lot better to me, I don't know, maybe it was just that the Black Adam scene finally got resolved after last week's sluggish installment but things seemed to at least be headed somewhere. Still, I wish this series was moving in real-time. I mean the Black Adam stuff has taken only a few minutes to unfold while for Jimmy hours (days?) have passed. Everything just felt more organized back then.

Avengers: The Initiative #3

Damn fine issue and an awesome Spider-Man appearance. The ending with Komodo begging to not have her powers taken was moving. Also, I'm looking forward to see who Hardball (?) was talking with. Hydra, AIM, who?

Slott does a great issue presenting the registration act as a mixed bag.

The Scarlet Spider army certainly has potential to be a cool force in the Marvel universe.

Oh and the usual cry of Slott for Amazing Spider-Man!

Iron Man #18

Finally, some action. This issue was a fantastic climax to an arc that I really haven't been crazy about. I mean the thing was dragging so bad, but the last issue was just awesome.

Plus there were a few great one-liners.

"FREAKING RIGHT NOW"

and that montage over all the people's he lost that ends with "I am Iron Man" was cool.

Definitely looking forward to seeing this plot picked up after the World War Hulk tie-in ends.

My only problem is I don't get how Maya could just hook up with a private company. I thought she was only out of jail because she was working with SHIELD and Stark. Did I miss something?

Still, the best issue by far since Civil War ended.

I'll be reading Ms. Marvel and Marvel Zombies tomorrow. Definitely looking forward to that.

Today I got in the post and in the middle of raiding I read MOUSE GUARD: FALL OF 1152 HC.

Which was as good as I hoped it would be. It looks just stunning which is a great reason to get it alone. Thankfully it's not the only reason and it holds up as a great start into a new fantasy world. The lone Mouse Guard against the army of Crabs was excellent depicted and was one of the highlights for me. It's very much "this is my first attempt at a story in the world" but it is a fantastic start and I only want to read more about the characters. I wish it was a bit longer things just happen and move a bit too quickly. I'd gladly read talking heads for a while to learn about political structure, religious structure, general technology, society or some more of the history of the world. It wouldn't bore me and after reading this I'm genuinely interested in the world he has made.

I guess it's a good thing when the only bad things I can possibly say is "too short and do more".

I want Dini's 'Tec right now.:cmad::csad:

I skipped the shop today because I thought only Detective came out for me. Oh, yeah. AND BUFFY. Kill me, wait you don't have to, because I think I might die if I don't buy it within 24 hours of its release.

Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness #4 - I'll be glad when this finishes up. It's not horrible, but I'm tired of paying money for it every month because of teh completist in me. The whole Marvel Zombies thing has run it's course, at least for me. That and the second artist in this issue left a little to be desired. It was nice to see Sean Phillips wrap up the last few pages, though.

The best part has to be the bit about Mystique biting Quicksilver, and him pretty much infecting the world. I thought that was a nice touch.

Apparently the new Detective is a humdinger. I wasn't going to pick it up but I think I will now.

Actually I'll go pick up comics right now.

If you think you're going to explode, can I take pictures?

The Seventh Shrine TPB (Dabel Bros.)
Essential Silver Surfer Vol. 2
Aliens Vs. Predator Omnibus Vol. 1

Just to talk about the Trades, which I won't get to for a while:

Essential Silver Surfer Vol. 2:

Readers should definitely pick up Vol. 1 before Vol. 2. That early Silver Surfer series still holds up well, even though it was written so long ago. But, in this issue, you get some very recent appearances (at least, recent in my mind) from Epic Illustrated #1, Silver Surfer One-Shot (1982), Silver Surfer (1987) 1-18, Annual #1, and Marvel Fanfare #51. Except for the Wolverine volumes, this is a rare Essential that gives readers comics from 1990. The only downside to this volume is the only issue I don't have in this collection would be the 8-page story from Epic Illustrated #1. 10/10

Aliens Vs. Predator Omnibus Vol. 1: Pretty affordable Omnibus for only 24.99 for over 400 pages. This collects Aliens vs. Predator, Aliens vs. Predator: War, Aliens vs. Predator: Eternal, and stories from issues 146 & 147 of Dark Horse Presents. I wish more companies would make their Omnibus' so affordable. While I'd love to buy some of Marvel's big collections, I can't imagine that they are worth the $99.00 price tag. If you are a fan of Aliens and Predator like me, this is a great collection. 10/10

The Seventh Shrine: No review for this title. It will take some time to read, as this trade paperback released under the Dabel Bros./Marvel line is set up like a novel with pictures throughout to make it seem to be in a comic book format. Those of you who read the recent issue of Batman featuring the Joker will know the style very well. It's pretty affordable, too. Only $11.99.

I disagree. I really love the anticipation I'm left with while reading an ongoing. I just find certain stories work better in this format, and Father was one of them.

Very often to military engineers end up working with private companies when developing things.

I disagree. I really love the anticipation I'm left with while reading an ongoing. I just find certain stories work better in this format, and Father was one of them.

When I read a story in single issues, month to month, it feels like there's not enough actual story packed into the individual issues. When I read them together as a whole, I don't get that feeling, obviously.

To each his own, though.

I was surprised by how not-sucky New Warriors #1 was. I could've done without the mystery text-messager's "lol" and "l8r" and all the other stupid text message-speak--in fact, it kind of felt like Grevioux was trying too hard to make a lot of the dialog sound "hip"--but overall it was pretty good. I never read New Mutants or New X-Men, but Sofia was instantantly likeable and charismatic (except for that one part in the diner where she came off like a completely stuck-up *****e to her boss). Great move making her the POV character for our introduction to the Warriors.

Paco Medina's art is getting better. His faces in this issue were a little less cartoony and a little more expressive and varied. I also really liked how he slipped all of the little pro-Initiative propaganda into the exterior shots of the city.

The Warriors' reformatting from goofy reality TV fare to a serious, guerilla vigilante force aimed directly at blowing holes in Tony's perception that unregistered heroes can't get the job done is a stronger premise than I initially thought. I found myself wondering if Night Thrasher was the real deal and, if so, how he went from starring in said reality TV show back to a more serious demeanor reminiscent of his early days with the Warriors.

The one off element was Beak. Losing his powers is well and good, but how the hell did he wind up looking like a model? And what's the deal with his "liking" Sofia? What happened to his **** wife and their brood of little bastard children? In short, wtf?
