Bought/Thought October 28th, 2009 - SPOILERS

I don't think I ever said that exact quote, but I do love that show. Yes, it's dated, but the writing was often really, really good.

Finally got to read some stuff.

Dark Reign The List - Punisher: This wasn't just the best book of the week...it was the best book of the year without a doubt:applaud. Everyone knows what happened by now so I won't repeat it. Rick Remender and JRJR were fantastic. I'll definitely check out FrankenCastle. My only question is how does this affect the Punisher Max relaunch? Does the Punisher Max comic take place in the past? Anybody?

Ms. Marvel #46: If not for the above mentioned Punisher one shot this was my favorite book of the week. War of the Marvels was really good and Moonstone is my favorite Dark Avenger right now (Although Daken has me interested in him now). Ms. Marvel totally broke Karla psychologically. I wonder how this will play into the upcoming end of Dark Avengers?

Anti Venom: New Ways to Live #2: More Punisher! This wasn't as good as last issue, but it was still ok. I'm a little bored already with Brock trying to rescue a damsel-in-distress that's a recovering junkie, but overall I like the new direction they're taking him.

Spider-Man: The Clone Saga #2: Didn't like it. I hated the Clone Saga, it drove me away from Spider-Man in the mid 90's, but I tried to give this a chance. The first few pages did it for me. I'll admit I'm not familiar with Kaine but his joking on page 1 seemed out of character. I though he was supposed to be a tragic figure? Plus DeFalco and Mackie made a reference to Jon Stewart early on. The Clone Saga was from 94 to 96. Jon Stewart hit it big when he took over The Daily Show in 1999...poorly done fellas. Stuff like that makes me stop reading right away.

Also enjoyed NA#58 and X-Force #20 as always. Bendis was better than normal this month. I still have to read Dark Wolverine #79.

An inconsistent schedule is always the death knell of a comic's fanbase. I'm sorry to say I found out about Dynamo 5 a bit late, but Dread's gushing got me onto the book and I grabbed as many of the backissues I could find thus far (missing one or two yet). The book has never failed to be good, and hopefully it'll keep that steam going when it returns. If a mini-series format is what it takes then that's what it takes.

For the record, Mephisto DID recover from being blasted into fragments by Franklin Richards, it just took a long time. And contributed to the whole Scarlet Witch/Vision/fake baby breakdown.

Glad to hear that DYNAMO 5 will continue, Jay Faerber. Glad some others here are taking an interest in it. If back issues can't be had, there are 3 trades out there (and I assume soon a 4th), which makes me curious if some 25-26 issue "Omnibus" style HC would be out of the question. The first trade was priced very well and I convinced a few people to give it a try online, and they didn't regret it. It does seem that some shops do under-order D5, whether by sales or schedule or whatnot. I live in Brooklyn, New York, and while that's hardly a desert in terms of comic shops, most shops within the borough, on a good day, order maybe 1-6 copies of D5 (although some ordered maybe a dozen or more of the .99 issue zero); if I don't zoom to the shop ASAP, I'll miss it. Shops in Manhattan usually order a bit more of everything, so it usually can be had there. D5 is a book I have been willing to chase on a subway an extra hour. :)

Punisher Max and the previous Marvel Knights Punisher is not part of the 616.

Blackest Night #4 - Another solid issue that still suprisingly doesn't feature an A-list hero other than the Flash. The only problem I have is that each issue can maybe feel a little...dense. Maybe it's that I'm coming home from basketball on top of school and I'm just tired -- I don't know. Ivan Reis' art, in terms of detail an pencils, is great. Though, I don't care for most of his rather repetitive panel work. It's as if he's trying to fit too much on one page, but I don't know if I'd blame that on Johns or Reis. A good issue, regardless -- even if the Scarecrow moment was cringe-worthy.:o

Batman #692 - Somewhat good issue that finally seems to adjusting the title book to Dick as Batman. Great pencils and coloring, but I feel indifferent as to where this arc is heading. Nearly each character was broing and felt the same, in a way. I'll keep buying this just for Tony Daniel's art, but I can't see the story getting much better.

Arkham Reborn - I found the Arkham one-shot released last May a good read and now it's followed up by a mini-series and I'm happy to say the first issue is solid. I'd love to see Arkham pretty much lose it like he did in The Last Arkham arc.

Chew #1 - Very fun issue; I can't believe I've been missing out on this series. I'll own #2-5 by the end of the week.

Green Lantern #47 - Another great issue with great artwork by Mahnke(sp?). IMO, this is just as good, if not better than the actual mini-series.

Quick question: has anyone picked up Haunt by Robert Kirkman, Underground by Greg Rucka or King City?

Yes, a 4th TPB will be out in January, so the entire series will be available in TPB form before the book returns from hiatus.

We don't have any plans to release a HC edition, though. I'd love to have one, but I just don't think there's enough support for it.

Quick question: has anyone picked up Haunt by Robert Kirkman, Underground by Greg Rucka or King City?

Quick answer: Yes, Yes, and no.

Somewhat extended answer:

Haunt was pretty decent; I'm definitely going to pick up the next bunch of issues. Kirkman and McFarlane do a pretty good job setting up the first issue, and it's got that old Image feel.

Underground is actually by Jeff Parker and Steve Lieber. (Both are going to be at the November 15th Portland Comic Show..it's about a 3 hour drive...but, that might make it worth it.) I wasn't thrilled with the first issue; but, the second issue really picked things up. Sometimes a first issue set up doesn't do a book justice, and I felt this may have been the case with Underground. Also, sometimes it's real nice not to have to read another superhero comic; and this sure isn't one of those. Still, not sure it's for everyone. I just love Parker's work, and will support his comics.

I just looked up Brandon Graham's "King City" Damn, that title looks pretty darn good, and the August reviews were very praiseworthy. I guess it was previously collected by TokyoPop. I might have to look this one up.

I'm not really sure why I'm still reading Green Lantern. I read it at lunch and the whole time I was just speeding through pages without feeling anything. I don't care about any of the characters it covers. Larfleeze's half a page or so was kind of funny, though.

Not even Sinestro? He's arguable the most complex character in the whole series.

Thanks, man. We're currently working on a way to do the book that will be the best of both worlds -- do what are essentially mini-series, but also keep retain the numbering and continuity.

What makes the mini-series appealing is that we've pretty much proven that we can't do the book on a monthly schedule, so continuing to solicit it as a monthly series just wouldn't be very honest. So we're looking at other avenues. But in the meantime, the book is still in production. The next issue is already halfway drawn and I've written scripts for the next two issues.

The numbering/mini-series storytelling seems to be working with Dynamite's Lone Ranger comic... though I have no idea what kind of sales figures come with that book... but it should be higher... :cmad:

Thanks for the response...

There's a comic that makes me very frustrated, especially when you compare it to the vastly superior Zorro. Lone Ranger had humongous hype when that first issue came out; yet, in the past year, we must have only gotten about 4 issues, it seems. Plus, with the slow pace of each issue, you don't feel like you're getting anywhere with it. I would bet that Lone Ranger's numbers have fallen immensely.

Yet, Zorro comes out pretty frequently, and that book comes loaded with content.

Of course....I would love to see Zorro vs. Lone Ranger. Zorro would take him in a heartbeat!

He's all right. But practically his entire current characterization is the result of retcons Johns has made over the course of the current GL series, which I haven't read, so I don't really know that much about the current version. I still basically see him as the megalomaniacal control-freak from the animated universe.

Plus, I liked Mongul and I thought it was lame how Sinestro cheated to beat him. :oldrazz:

Fantastic Four 572: Pretty good read, though, as much as my love for this book is increasing since Millar worked on it, I'm feeling the stories to be a tad too short for the matreial they're covering. Even so, that moments between our Reed and one of the others was very touching.

The Invincible Iron Man 19: Probably my favorite book one the stands. The ending left me wanting more, ubt with the knowledge that this story distends further beyond this one's ending, it's still extrememly badass. IT's pretty much why Tony Stark is my favorite comic book character.

The Incredible Hulk 603: Again, ****ing awesome book. The humor in it is fitting, as well as the action. I caught Hulk in the midst of that Rulk ****, so I'm glad I've got this book to really fill my Hulk quota. The dynamic between Skaar and Banner is awesome, and the moments between Banner and Wolverine in this story were great as well.

The Amazing Spider-Man 609: I'm really not as into this one as I want to be. I love Spider-Man, but this current storyline really leaves much to be desired. I never got into the Clone Saga so maybe that's why I'm not that into it, but it does feel a bit draggy and the villian, while his design is pretty awesome, is a bit of a pain. I'm still not sure why the they're swinging like buddies on the cover though. :P

Wolverine: Weapon X 6: My favorite book on the stands, honestly. I love that Steven King/ David Lynch vibe coming off this new arc. Aaron takes a lot of changes with his Wolverine stories, and this one is no different. I even like the new artist, as it would probably fit the pyscho/crazy feel better than Garney. This is one is just warming up, and I can't believe I'd love a Wolverine so much without him popping his claws once.

Punisher 9: It's nice to see Frank Castle with his own series now, but it's still one to be desired. The art is meh at best and the ending of what was once a great concept for a storyline just left me dissappointed.

X-Force 20: X-23 is easily becoming a favorite of mine. This book is just beast in everyway. I'd like to see more of the team in future issues, but this X-23 centric arc is awesome. I love the gore, and the pacing, the art, EVERYTHING. IT's amazing.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to speak of DC here. If so I'll return.

Any comics are fine. The B/T threads are in the Marvel forum because the Marvel forum tends to get the most traffic out of the comic forums and because, basically, they've always been created in here.

I think the reason why TLR comes out irregularly is because they put out 3 or 4 or 5 issues arcs within the numbering with breaks in between...

I'm not sure where I read that, but it seems like that was the intent of the writers...

I'd like to think that Clayton Moore could kick Guy Williams' ass any day of the week... :oldrazz:

Nice to see someone else who's read Weapon X here. It was strange but in a cool kinda way. I am not so sure how he doesn't just claw his way outta there just by instinct alone, but then they do play up on Logan's feelings of guilt over all the mehyam he's caused over the years. He does seem to feel that he belongs there in some way.

I too am a fan of X-23 and have been ever since she was introduced into the comics way back in NYX. I must have a thing for these claw people becuase I really like Daken too even though he's a total jerkface. I love to watch him manipulate folks into doing stuff.

Honestly, I hated Daken, up until I saw him TIH 603. It was actually really cool seeing him interact with his dad and Skaar. If only for his really distracting look, I'd probably pick up Dark Wolverine.

And honestly, this whole "Wolverine is overrated, I'm not picking up his stuff" attitude is getting REALLY annoying. If he was so bad, he wouldn't be getting the attention he gets. His stories, especially with writers like Jason Aaron and Weapon X and Origins, are better than half of the boks on the shelf.

Yeah, I haven't been reading any Hulk books in a long while but I picked up that last one because Daken was in it and I had thought it was an Origins crossover (it wasn't). It was a delightful read, easy for me to follow even though like I said, I haven't been reading any Hulk stuff. I was especially amused at the end when both pairs of father and son looked at the other and said, "I'm glad we're not like them." :p Neither one would be the parental ideal, lol.

EDIT: Here's a question, Do you suppose it's true that Skaar really wanted Daken to kill him as Daken claims? I couldn't read all that super tiny print. If so, then I feel kinda bad for the guy. :(

I was really wondering about that as well. That's the only thing in the issue that took be back a bit. I couldn't figure why he'd want to die, or if it was a plan, what the point of it was.

Daken could have lied, he is a dick that way. :p

Skaar is pretty effed up in the head, though. The guy's had an awful life. He also tried to kill Galactus by punching him with the Oldpower even though he knew he'd probably get killed. I figured he was just a savage idiot, but maybe it was a death wish.

I couldn't read the teeny print so I decided to try scanning that one panel at a super high res, see if I can pick up what was actualy said.

It was just gibberish or a foreign language. Jerks. Not sure how Daken knew what he said -- unless Daken made him say it by influencing him with his pheremones. He is kinda empathic that way.

No, no, it's code! Look, he threw a "wow" in there; that's universal in every language. :awesome:
