Bought/Thought October 28th, 2009 - SPOILERS

Quickly Reviews:

Dark Avengers - Ares #1: Good, solid issue, bringing the greatness of Ares back. Bendis really turned him into a bit of a joke with Mighty Avengers, especially after that awesome miniseries a few years ago. This reasserts Ares as the badass he is. Not as good as that first miniseries..but, thankfully, it's a big step in the right direction.

Secret Warriors #9: Man, this is one of those titles that I thought would be dull and boring, especially with my disappointment of Nick Fury's use in Secret Invasion...but, this title has been spot on. Every issue (except maybe the first, which kind of set all this up) has realy impressed me. I still have that feeling that I shouldn't enjoy this as much as I do; but, it's done just right. Hickman is awesome, an I love Vitti's art. (The countdown pages looked great!)

Spider-Woman #2: I didn't follow this comic on the net; so, I am glad I have it in book form. (I'm taking it that's the case with this..I didn't look it up, so I'm not really sure if this is an exact duplicate of what they were offering up as the webcomic.) I loved Bendis when he did Alias, and these first two issues really have that Alias touch. It works well with Jessica Drew, and is probably some of my favorite Bendis work in ages. Plus, Maleev's art works well with this Noir type of style.

Punisher #10: Wow, the ending of this (what seemed very long) storyarc involving Frank vs. The Hood comes to an ending that has stuck with me since I read it two days ago. Really, how does the reader feel about Frank's decision? Do we believe what the Hood said, or do we believe Frank's reasoning and subsequent decision? I don't know...I dislike Frank more than I have ever.
I think it was his family in those caskets, and this shows how very far gone he is. He was willing to save J.W. Bridge (who, I take it, just bit the bullet), but sentences his family to a second death...and, one of the worst I can think of, burning to death.
Seriously, Remender is becoming one of my favorite writers. What a friggin' issue!!!

Wolverine Origins #41: Cool issue. I love seeing Skaar showing up in this issue, and how nice to see the Wolverine titles being so much better than they were just a couple years ago.

Hulk #16: Ya know, I'm just reading this and not thinking much about it any more. I've had enough; but, if I have to deal with one bad Marvel book out of six, that's not too bad. Red She-Hulk makes no sense at all...and, one minute Loeb has Rulk being bad ass and unbeatable, and the next he's all talk with very little action. There is just no consistency with this book. I'm hoping after the big battle of the Hulks, that it all just goes away.

Wait, what did Bendis do to Ares in Mighty Avengers? I thought Ares maintained his badassitude. What I've seen of Ares in Bendis' Dark Avengers has been solid, at least...

I'm not sure how to explain it. Bendis almost turned Ares into a joke. He just ran in without any thought to a fight. He didn't really advance the character in any way...in fact, Ares became so two dimensional, I hated the character. (He did the same thing with The Sentry.)

It's my big Bendis complaint. He does not seem to care for what came before, and just writes these things how he wants them. (See his retake on Secret Wars, my most hated of all Bendis comics.) Don't get me wrong, as much as I get upset with Bendis on Avengers, I love him on Alias, Powers, and Ultimate Spider-Man(for the most part...there were a few stories on USM that weren't that good) and this new Spider-Woman. But, he does have his face buried deeply in his own projects, even ignoring everything that went down the Sentry in World War Hulk. (I STILL don't understand how Sentry is still around as if nothing happened in that event.)

Not sure if that explained it.

Ah, I see. On the other hand, though, Bendis contributed to the complexity of Ares and Alex's relationship a couple issues of Dark Avengers ago. Where he left Alex with Fury because he loved Alex and realized that Fury would be a much better influence on Alex.

So much deaths in the MU this week. Guardians of the Galaxy and the Punisher had to be the most shocking. Franken-Castle just sounds stupid. I won't spend a dime on it. Who the heck came up with a lame idea like that?!?

See, while I agree that Castle's decision was shocking and would've made a grand ending, I thought there was absolutely no emotional investment from Castle AT ALL. It ended too abruptly. Also, maybe I missed something, but was that "envelope" in the last issue? The one Frank was sending to Fisk?

Yes, there was no emotional investment from Castle, and I really thought that was the point Remender was bringing out. Castle is so far gone, the ending just showed that even more. Maybe FrankenCastle isn't so far removed for the man Frank had become?

Or, maybe I'm reading too much into it. But, damn, makes me just appreciate this new direction even more!!!

Geez, Guardians of the Galaxy just depressed me this week. The only one of those people I won't miss is Major Victory. :(

Major Victory, Gamora, Phyla-Vell, Cosmo, Mantis, and Adam Warlock

Considering Gamora can regenerate, I kind of doubt she is really dead.

Didn't he slice her head off with the shield though, she surely has to have her brain attached to the rest of her bod, unless she grows a body from her kneck.

Did he slice her head completely off? I thought he just kind of cut her throat, because afterward didn't it show her laying there with her head still intact from the rest of her body? I don't have it with me to check, though, so I may be wrong

But, yeah, even so, it did feel like a surprisingly down issue in the series

Major Victory is one of the characters I desperately want to return. I really liked the fact that there was a connection between the original Guardians and the new one. It'd suck if that connection just got killed off. And worse, it doesn't even look like they took Vance's shield! That's a perfectly good alternate universe version of Captain America's shield going to waste. :csad:

I also really want Cosmo and Mantis back. The rest I can go either way on.

I'm wondering if Mantis and Cosmo are actually dead. I know Starlord (or whoever it was) said they were, but I wonder if next issue we'll find out they weren't and he thought they just were or got caught up in the moment and jumped to conclusions.

I mean that is a lot of death for the the team

Yeah, which is why I don't think it'll last. Adam will probably stay dead to keep the threat of the Magus out of the universe, but Cosmo? Cosmo's gonna stay dead forever? Hell no. DnA wouldn't do that to us. :oldrazz:

Mantis eats death for lunch. And I doubt it will be long before Adam is back in a cocoon.

:doom: :doom: :doom:

yeah I'm a couple of issues of Gaurdians and reading this I really need to catch up.

dread,

In Nova was the Tarcel/ Gaarthen Saal storyline ever addressed in Anything...I must have missed that..

Is that still out there?

It was never really defined " our" valentino Astrovik/ Major Victory...In fact Mantis said "he wasnt human" or somthing like that which was never even explored more...

I did like his presence in the book also. He was and is a strong character and my favorite of the old school GOTGers.

I think we'll see him again someday.

X-Men Forever #10. What a bore. Why do I keep torturing myself with this dribble? Because it's the only book with both Sabretooth and Gambit in it and yet, the bits with them in it are much too far and inbetween. :( I gotta stop reading this crap.

Quick answer: Yes, Yes, and no.

Somewhat extended answer:

Haunt was pretty decent; I'm definitely going to pick up the next bunch of issues. Kirkman and McFarlane do a pretty good job setting up the first issue, and it's got that old Image feel.

Underground is actually by Jeff Parker and Steve Lieber. (Both are going to be at the November 15th Portland Comic Show..it's about a 3 hour drive...but, that might make it worth it.) I wasn't thrilled with the first issue; but, the second issue really picked things up. Sometimes a first issue set up doesn't do a book justice, and I felt this may have been the case with Underground. Also, sometimes it's real nice not to have to read another superhero comic; and this sure isn't one of those. Still, not sure it's for everyone. I just love Parker's work, and will support his comics.

I just looked up Brandon Graham's "King City" Damn, that title looks pretty darn good, and the August reviews were very praiseworthy. I guess it was previously collected by TokyoPop. I might have to look this one up.

Thanks

I won't expect much from Haunt. It seems like it could be a fun title and, like most, I'm a fan of Ottley and Kirkman's Invincible. For Underground, for some reason, the second issue cover gave me a supernatural vibe so it looked immediately interesting to me. After researching it a bit more, I'll probably just wait for the trade. King City looks like an awesome title. The bigger size looks awesome and I'm susceptible to post-apocalyptic stories.

I figured Mantis was referring to the fact that he shouldn't be alive, since he's way older than any human should be. The suit probably had to change some stuff around to preserve him for all those years.
