Box Office 2015

Looks like those predictions weren't high enough.

From Deadline:

7TH UPDATE Friday, 11:55 PM: Industry analysts currently see Star Wars: The Force Awakens with an opening day record of $125M-$127M+ en route for an all-time record opening of $251M-$255M, calculated from midnight tickets sales on both the east and west coast. To put Fans Line Up To Watch "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" In New York CityForce Awakens’ opening in perspective, consider the following: Disney made $100M from the film in just 21 hours at 1PM PST; an amount that most successful tentpoles open to in a 3-day weekend. By Sunday, Force Awakens will beat or come close to beating the entire domestic runs of the last two Hobbits which were released over the last two Decembers— The Desolation of Smaug ($258.4M) and The Battle of Five Armies ($255.1M). It took Jurassic World five days to cross $250M. Domestic all-time grosser Avatar, which opened during this frame back in 2009 to $77M and ended its stateside cume at $749.8M, took 12 days to clear $250M. However, that was during the pre-historic days of digital and 3D cinema. When Avatar opened there were 3,100 RealD screens in the U.S./Canada; now there are 14,000 with the majority of them playing Force Awakens.
Oh, I did not see that prediction, or at least didn't remember him. Looks like someone has a lot of crow to eat. :hehe:

Anyone think SW could overthrow Avatar worldwide?

It's a possibility. With the amount of hype it has, as well as the acclaim the film is getting from audiences and critics, it could have the legs to beat it. I certainly hope it does. I'd be happy with a good Star Wars film having that record.

:funny:

Reading the first few pages of the Star Wars box office thread is hilarious. A lot of, "Star Wars isn't relevant" anymore. And of course, you can guess what these people are a fan of.

what were they a fan of?

Star Wars is not going to make $2 billion or anything close, it won't even beat out Jurassic World to be the #1 movie of the year.

About $1.4 billion will be where the train ends. The movie will open between $125-$150 million & domestically will end up around $400-$500 million.

Disney can overshoot with their numbers (something that's unfortunately spread with everyone else) but I know, based on the numbers, the way things going & previous history that this movie will not even come close to being the biggest movie in history.

:hehe:

Marvel and DC fans dipped their toes in to remind us Star Wars doesn't carry the weight it use it. The best talk though is in the box office threads for Avengers and BvS if I remember correctly. Since the pre-ticket sales have come in however, very little talk. I wonder why...

It won't. The overseas market won't let it. I hear a local South Korean film made more money than Star Wars this weekend. The domestic battle is on though.

Hey, I was wrong. But I've stated several times that I could be, so you should've quoted one of those posts instead. :cwink:

But anywho, congrats to Star Wars & its fans, this is a monumental accomplishment that I truly didn't think the film would accomplish. But I'm no hater, I'll give credit where it's due. Hell, I did kind of start rooting for the movie deep down the closer we got to the release. :sly:

Your apology was as poor as your prediction. 0/10. :o

I'm personally not so surprised by these predictions(i'm sure the actuals will be higher, they sometimes tend to be ala this year).

With big films there are sometimes ones with campers and sometimes ones with walk ins and sometimes just straight legs(sometimes all 3). By campers I mean you turn on the news and you hear about people in line ups around the block weeks out. There have been a few films like that and I would imagine star wars is the mother of all camper films. That it would, at it's best smash the opening record is only so surprising, especially domestically.

However something like avatar represents the other 2 categories(in hindsight), one that seemingly dropped nill in it's second weekend. I can't see a camper film opening near 300 dropping nill(literally) in week two. However this is the winter season so anything is possible.

I'm one of the people that predicted big numbers for this, especially domestically, but at the same time, avatars WW is a very particular kinda of thing. Hard to process. However the market has expanded in such an unpredictable way that the rules are rewritten monthly. F7 for instance.

Also fun to see how people(fans) lean on china money so much now. Only a few months ago I had to argue for it's legitimacy in the face of TF4 malcontents, now china money is...something else.

The crazy thing is, it's breaking JW's international records without China.

What is the deal with China? They embargo December films for a few months or something? Is there a business rationale behind that? What's the logic?

The folks who said that Star Wars wouldn't be able to be the highest grossing film of the year are gonna eat some serious crow.

Editing stuff their govt don't like.

I think there was some talk about it when the Civil War trailer dropped. Or maybe it was earlier.

I wonder if Marvelites still think Civil War will close in on Star Wars.

I'm a "Marvelite" who loves SW and was up for a 5:15AM show because I could get a better seat. CW won't come near to TFA. I'd say CW will do maybe 1.2-1.4B WW and maybe 330M+ DOM (If it's well received). Early this year, I would have thought that AoU would slightly outperform TFA and JW wouldn't have entered into my mind as being the #1 movie of the year (pre-December). I also bought a $16 popcorn container that will soon serve duty as wine cooler.

Call me crazy.......

EDIT: Did they have those overpriced popcorn containers (see attachment) at just IMAX theaters or were they generally available? People were actually buying them and all other kinds of stuff.

My theater had nothing that cool. I am totally jealous. :oldrazz:

Also, I love your avatar. :woot:

And your post is as poor as your attitude. You really need to grow a sense of humor, you take yourself way too seriously. I'm not going to drop down on my hands and knees & scream to the Heavens. I was wrong, I admitted I was, end of discussion. Troll.

Anyway, will probably end up seeing this during the end of the week so all my conjecture was just in good fun anyway/now moot.

I'm glad I was there.....my wife wanted to buy all 5 of the popcorn containers. That would have been one sure way to make sure I had a heart attack before the movie even started. :cwink:

Can't wait for Tatiana/Sarah/Rachel/Alison/Krystal and, of course, my personal favorite Helena to return. She got a refund and had to go......

I need a sense of humor? I at least know what the sarcastic smilie is. :cwink:

This post is great though. I am the one with the poor attitude, and you flipped out on a joke, clearly marked as so. :funny:

I am with your wife on this one. I would have totally bought them all. :funny:

I finally caught up on the whole series. Can't wait for the return as well.

The irony.:mnm:

Ah, it wasn't a joke. He's just falling back on that now to save face. Stop riding his coattails as he does so, it's not a good look. :D
