Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

I hope we get a third movie. And that it's a little more serious. With Inhumans (but no Lockjaw!)

Ain't nothin' wrong with that dog. :cmad:

I loved the movie, and I'm still here. But this is the BO discussion, and for me the fact that it didn't beat the first one is quite sad, specially since this one is much better.

I think we all liked the movie for the most part, but we are FF fans, I think honestly that a lot of us overlooked a few things because we are for the most part positive and we were hopeful for the movie. I like this movie, but I know that I am easily pleased. I can see that the potential for this franchise has been short changed by an inattentive attention to detail and a lack of respect for the source.

When you hear comments from Mark Frost about "well it was a studio driven enterprise and once you knew that going in you went with it" it make me a little bitter, because he is a writer. You have to maintain the balance on the creative side cause the suits are number crunchers for the most part.

Their jobs (suits) are tied to Fox and so they are going to be obsessed with the bottom line of fox.

Creators however have a little more independence as they move from company to company. Mark Frost apparently never held up his hand and said Doom must be Doom, heck it sounds like he suggested a lot of the changes. He made wholesale changes to classical characters because he thought that this would work better in the context of today.

And so DOOM, the template for Darth Vader became an Osbourne clone.

When I read that I could not believe it. Now we know why Dr. Doom was portrayed as he was.

So now you have a situation where Tim Story in trying to pitch the FF more on the epic side fought with Avi and won in getting the Studio to bring the Surfer, brought in Don Payne a more faithful fan of the source to try to correct what Frost and the Studio did.

So in this film you can see the influence of Tim in what this film is. Even so Fox brought some numbers to him and said the exit polls are skewing young, lets take it lighter, lets get a running time of about shrek and no Galactus battle cause the Surfer is expensive as it is, so cut that story out and lets just count the money.

I had no problem with the PG rating, I think that actually that was a plus, but the running time can't allow people to invest in these characters. Maybe the kids but for the young teens and adults you will feel cheated cause by the time you get comfortable with the characters Fox shows you the door, time to go.

I am embarrassed at myself, I jumped on some people for being too negative at times about what Fox's intentions were for this movie, but now Fox's intentions are clear.

And now to think that Tim is going to take the heat for the film not being as eventful as it could have been burns me, cause you can see that he has been working hard trying to be true to the source and to appease us hardcore fanboys.

Tim is not to blame for this stuff. It is obvious that he and Don Payne have had to be political, trying to move the studio from point A to B without offending everyone and losing their own opportunities.

Fox's model is not conducive to great and epic films. Their model is suited for simple light fare.

In that respect it is a tragedy that they have the FF franchise.

Ok that is it, no more negativity after today. I'm all out.

Here is to Jack and Stan, creators of the worlds greatest superhero team.

Bravo, Mr. Highguard.

I hope we get a third movie. And that it's a little more serious. With Inhumans (but no Lockjaw!) and Doom trying to seize the Inhumans' Terrigen Mists (maybe he even uses a burrowing 'Moleman' accomplice or 'negative zone' portal to access the otherwise impenetrable Great Refuge). And maybe Franklin born at the end (and seeming to be normal, to complete the arc of the family dynamic...with perhaps a final after-credits scene hinting that he is not normal, a glint in his eyes or something).

1) How do you recommend that they do a movie about ALIENS WHO LIVE ON THE MOON who have MAGIC MUTATING GAS, but still make it MORE SERIOUS?

2) Yes to more Doom. He should be the franchise's Magneto, but I want to see him become COMPLETE DOOM next time. Take over Latveria, get an army, build some robots. The WHOLE SHEBANG.

3) Just keep Franklin normal. No reason not to. He's been normal in the comics for a long time now, with all of his powers retconned away. There's no path that includes Franklin with powers that would interest me...

Theoretically they could do an Onslaught crossover with the X-Men.

And yes I do think it would suck.

I still wanna know where all this NEGATIVITY came from. Everybody who loved the movie after the first weekend has left the board, and now it's full of people who think it's crap, mediocre or barely above average. What happened?

I still love it. Give me an FF3 that's on part with RotSS and my socks will be rocked again.

**** YA MY BROTHA PREACH IT MY MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys, did they have the original movie that made decent money at box office with poor reviews granted a sequel? The sequel failed at the box office but had mixed reviews but the good reviews out-weighted the bad. When the third came around it was very successful critically and a box office hit.

Did this ever happened to a movie franchise trilogy?

Bishop2, I still for the most part like this movie, but with all this Mark Frost/Avi Arad nonsense I'm very worried about the sequel. However, My opinion of Tim Story has gone up since reading this thread. Don Payne too.

Simple. Don’t put them on the moon. And it’s not ‘magic’ mutating gas - it’s science. If FF can be evolved by a cosmic cloud, then I see no reason why we can’t have a race of people evolved by some other kind of cloud. It could be a radioactive elements in the earth that emerge through volcanic vents or geysers, or it could be a more controlled thing. There is nothing that way-out about hidden races of people existing on earth - history is full of the discovery of uncharted lands and unknown tribes/races of people. All the Inhumans need to be is a race/island/tribe of people who subject themselves to some kind of mutagenic radioactive volcanic emission and have built a great city around them. They wouldn’t call themselves Inhumans, they would be known by that in local folklore. Hopefully they’d have their own language, not American English...though Crystal could learn English in order to infliltrate the outside world...

You know, Fox did a stupid thing when they made the new Die Hard PG-13, because now it's much more likely to cannibalize the potential earnings of RotSS this weekend.

Fox did a stupid thing by sticking both of their tentpoles two weeks apart. They also assume that this installment of Die hard will draw in a big crowd after 12 freaking years. Finally they did a stupid thing by sticking both of the movies in a crowded time slot. They Should've had Die hard out in April and F42 out in August or vice versa.

Well if its any consolation, it is getting good reviews. 2nd only to the original...

Well said, i havent seen FF2 yet, but from the sounds of, this and the first movie (and the X-Men Trilogy for that matter, though i love the 1st two) could have been SO much better if it wasnt for Fox screwing around so much with their production. Just look at the extended edition of FF, which is a much better version of the first movie, which could have been even greater with a little more freedom given to the film-makers.

Though part of me is sad, i am honestly glad this movie isnt doing well, because it is what Fox deserves IMO. I'm also glad i got this movie on pirate instead of going to cinema to see it.

^^

dont you relise that because of people like you getting pirate dvd's it means that studios become more involved as that are trying to sell their films with flashy trailers and promos so that people come to the cinema, plus pirate dvd ... what are you 6 cant you affort to pay for the film like a normal person!

FF is currently a B-Movie superhero franchise. Fun, but disposable. A back-up to the big guns like Spider-Man or X-Men.

Now I do like and enjoy the FF series, but it's so far away from it's potential it's almost laughable.

If you gave the project to someone like James Cameron or Robert Zemekis, with a proper budget, they'd give you a proper epic sci-fi action adventure, like Back to the Future crossed with Terminator 2 and Spider-Man and Star Wars. Imagine a Thing who had genuine pathos and wasn't simply a walking advert for his own action figure. Imagine a Doctor Doom who was as regal and menacing as Darth Vader, a character based on Doom.

And rake in $400m US.

Because that's what FF is supposed to be, not some little comedy superhero flick.

Well......in order to make that kind of money, the table needed to be set. Sadly, it has not been set. A total reboot is in order. Get a CGI Thing. Jettison Chiklis. I'm tired of these excuses they write into the script for him to get face-time (i.e. the power switch with Johnny). How about being the Thing thru ther whole movie?

I don't think they are even close to making back the money spent on this crap fest. So, I think this whole discussion on how the next movie should be may be moot.
