Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

Yea China has been crossed off the list completly. Never could figure out what the deal was there. They kept pushing it back, and back, and suddenly it disapeared. So I think we can say the box office is done. So lets take a look at the final #'s.

Foreign Total as of Dec. 10, 2007:
$156,419,980

Domestic Total Gross: $131,921,738

Worldwide: $288,341,718

Not a bad worldwide take, made more than I expected it would after the soft opening and all. Here's hoping Fox decides to go for a part 3...if they release it in a not so packed slot it could do better.

I figured it out, taking how much domestic the 1st one made, and dividing by the price of a ticket to see how many viewed the 1st movie. Then I did the same with the 2nd movie. 4,122,367 less people went to see FF 2 then saw FF. That translates to $ 27.1 million more box office dollars or about $ 159 million domestic. DVD sales were strong. So far FF 2 has done $ 39.57 million in DVD home video rentals. 30 % of the box office take. So it has done extremly well considering everything.

They banned US productions. Several films are being made overseas and set up to actually be UK or Austrailian films because the studios have production offices there too but Fantastic Four didn't do that. China is such a backward thinking country I couldn't care less. They think it's ok to not crack down on piracy and let there people blatantly rip off other companies IP. They're not even trying to hide it.

Yea well. China would have bought in mabey 2 million. I'd like to see 290 rather than 288. :cwink: You figure $ 288 box office. $ 40 million from rentals. Thats $ 328 not including DVD sales. Not bad at all.

They need to scrap it and reboot! Get a new cast....a new director! Someone who isn't afraid to fire Chiklis and do the Thing in CGI. Someone who didn't cut his directing chops on "Barber Shop". Someone who will bring the villains they way they are suppose to be.

This whole thing was a major disappointment.

I have a few to add:

-Someone who can give a superhero action movie an epic, adventurous tone, with actual fight scenes.

-Someone with an artistic vision, instead of making a movie that feels like an extended, mediocre sitcom.

-Someone who doesn't cast a mediocre actress like Jessica Alba, and ridiculously try to pass her off as a blonde white girl.

-Someone who doesn't try to pass off Julian MacMahon in plain clothes with a smug attitude as "Dr. Doom."

I can't really fault Story for Mcmahon as Doom. When he was first announced as Doom, I felt it was the perfect cast actor and he actually does have the look of Doom. It's just that when he gets in the mask, that when it all goes down hill. I think had they stuck with Doom in the comics and still had Mcmahon play him, it would have come off better. But I totally agree about Alba. Worst casting ever! She's so overrated!

Point 1. I agree. Story is not a big action scene director. I would love to cross Story with Spielberg. You would have a director who not only can develope charactor, but a director who can direct one hell of an action scene.

Point 2. Sheesh. Jessica's a mixed bag. I like the way she portrays Sue, but she just does not have the look. You can't transform someone into someone they are not. She's not blond hair, blue eyed, and no amount of makeup, or wigs can change that.

Poimt 3. I have no problem with Jullian as Doom. In the 1st movie Victor was the smug, proud, victor over Reed. He was suscefull, and had Sue to boot. When he started to change into Dr. Doom, his arc was dead on. He had an evil look in his eye, and acted the part. In 2, there was too much Victor, as Victor, and not enough Victor as Dr. Doom.

I know,Dr.Doom needs to be evil and the Comming Of Galactus should have been done right. But people will still say the current films are fine.:ikyn

When it's all said and done,it's like it was said before. The higher ups should be blamed,if anyone.I can imagine the films were forced to be made like that..no creative decisions?

My problem isn't so much with Julian MacMahon, as it is the way Story used him. MacMahon has the look, and he can definately pull off the evil and arrogance needed for the character. But Story gave him crap to work with.

As you say, in part 2 there was "too much Victor, as Victor." MacMahon spent most of the movie in plain clothes, even though he had long transformed into Dr. Doom. He looked like a regular guy, and he acted like a typical smartass jerk. We all know somebody like that. There was nothing to set apart "Dr. Doom" as anything special. Anybody could have been him. Could Story have made things any more underwhelming?

In the 1st movie the crap he had to work with was the writers fault. He played the part well, but just had too many stupid lines ( Marco Polo for 1 ). However given the 2, I perfered the Doom of part 1, then the Doom of 2, only because there was not enough of Doom in part 2.

As to your 2nd point, underwhelming in the 2nd movie is correct. Not the 1st one.

Julian was completely wrong for this part. His voice was not right. It grated on my nerves!

Well, a friend came over and we watched both FF movies. He found them fine as forgettable fantasy fun, but said he didn't get to care about any of the characters, that nothing had any impact or depth even when the entire world was at stake and Sue died. He knew she'd be resurrected because she was one of the Four.

He thought the movies were reasonable bits of fluff, but lacked heft. And he thought the box office (which i looked up online and told him) pretty much reflected the (lack of) quality and that the movies could have been so much more.
