Transformers Box Office Thread

I must admit -- I was wrong about Harry Potter doing better than Transformers at the US box office:

Transformers: $302 mil domestic
Harry Potter 5: $272 mil domestic

Even if Harry Potter catches up (which is still a possibility), it would most likely end up tying Transformers' BO at best. I thought for sure that all the HP book hype would put the Order of the Phoenix movie way out in front of Transformers, but that was apparently not the case in the USA.

Now worldwide of course, HP: Order of the Phoenix is pimpslapping Transformers big-time:

Harry Potter 5: $822 mil worldwide
Transformers: $631 mil worldwide

I wonder how the DVD sales between the two will compare...

First of all there is not even a theoretical chance for Harry Poter to get to 300 let alone beating TF domestically, not a single chance.

And second Potter has 822 worldwide not 882 ;)

I don't see Potter surpassing TF. On it's 33 day, TF was at $294, Potter is at $272. That $20 million needed to be made up much earlier in it's domestic release.

Harry Potter is a sequel. They always do better do to HYPE. And the fact TF is catching up to it, well....I think you get the drift.

I didn't say "beat", I said "tie", but yeah, the $30 mil needed for that is pretty unlikely at this point.

I'm going to go watch Harry Potter 117 times just to kick you all in the nuts. :cmad:

I've been saying since mid May that Transformers would come in the top three domestically and beat Potter, but Potter would have a bigger worldwide intake.

I'm surprised at how much money this thing has made overseas...

Go for it. Then you go broke from spending 11,115 bucks, and you have to go bankrupt and loose all your possessions to the bank.

TF was "fun"... but Harry Potter/Pheonix was a much superior movie. And I'm not even a Potter fan. I can see why TF is doing well tho... after the past few summers of brainy or self-involved movies that ask you to think, TF I think was a welcome release for a lot of people.

I haven't seen Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix yet, but I'm sure it's a better film than Bayformers. Hopefully, the next weekend will yield no more than 1.75 million and it can continue its rapid decline from there. :woot:

Man,first of all you i'm a HP fan and the book>>>>>>>>the movie so there you go...just like you as an non-HP fan think the movie is awesome,it's the same thing with 95% of TF non-fans who thing the movie rocks

And almost everywhere i read or everyone i talk to liked TF more than HP.

You know i hate when people piss on stuff that arent too damn intelectual or too complicated...take Green Day for example and Dream Theater for the other example:The first one is a band with 3 chords and story to tell and the second one is formed by some of the best musicians that walk the earth and guess who is more popular and influential?

Quality is subjective, sometimes less is more and that was the case with TF...

And btw portland2002 you have no idea who pathetic you sound like...

It's like HAHAHA **** you Sam Raimi SP1 didnt beat Titanic cause you dare to make Spider-webs organic!!!

I don't disagree. But you proved my point with the Green Day vs Dream Theater comparison. You're right... quality is subjective. It's also why NSYNC and Backstreet Boys outsell Green Day, Nirvana, and everybody. Fun is fun. I said Transformers was "fun."

As for HP movie vs the book. I have no doubt you're right. My fiance tells me so too. It's usually the case with books that become movies. That doesn't mean HP wasn't a superior "movie movie" than TF. There's no doubt- objectively- that it was. As to folks personal *tastes*?... that's another story.

Well i guess you're right maybe it's better if you look at it from a critic's stand-point but so what?I mean there at least 50 movies i have watched that are far better than either TF and HP but are considered:boring, far too long and what not by the general audience...i mean if they did most blockbusters by that formula there woudnt be no blockbusters, only flops...

Most of the people go to the cinema to relax and forget about their personal live for the 2 hours they are there and that's why movies like HP,Pirates TF and SP are popular...you go in there have a great time and go home with a smile on your face

Then there are potential blockbusters that try to be mature and take the formula i was talking about earlier like Superman Returns and Hulk and we all know how that worked at the end.

Objectively? Please, there is no way you can be the judge of that in an objective way. If you think HP is a superior movie, then it's your subjective view. Not objective. :)

Um...not in my opinion. Harry Potter movies suck IMO. And Transformers was a good movie with more than special effects. It had a plot. It wasn't a die hard where you watch it for the explosions.

Congrats to TF for crossing $300 mil over the weekend!

I knew you could do it....too bad those little teenage girls didn't know you were going to be better than SM3! :(

Actually it's not a rapid decline, it's the same decline as every other movie this Summer.

It was a better movie, but it hasn't beaten SM3 yet.

Yet?

It's not beating Spider-Man 3.

Probably looking at a final domestic gross of $311 - $313 million.

I'm looking at its total worldwide gross. It's got 200 thousand or so to go.
