Box Office Thread

Tron Legacy at least made a profit. A small one but it was profitable. Plus, they have the new Tron ride at Disney World.

The Marvels will be one of the biggest flops of all time. Disney is going to lose hundreds of millions on this.
This is why I would be shocked if Captain America, Fantastic 4, Thunderbolts and Blade are released less than two years from now. And these neXt 2 years can fly by instantly, so its not really a long time from now.

Surely if The Marvels which is basically Captain Marvel 2 and had a lead who appeared in Endgame, flopped so hard. What else more for 4 non-sequel films (two of those are reboots for ips that don't have a great track record at the boX office). I hope Kevin Feige appears neXt year's SDCC to reassure us about the future of the MCU. I'd hate to see this end up like FoXverse and DCEU.

$635k for Friday, domestic total is at $78.86m.
So it looks to edge past $80m by the end of the weekend. I said last week $85m looked to be the high end of where it will finish and that is looking even more likely now. Probably in the $84m to $85m range unless it loses theaters faster next weekend.

And that's that. Surprised Disney hasn't announced a date for PVOD.

Thats crazy that they aren't gonna report international boX office updates after this weekend. For a Marvel movie, that heavily emphasizes on the word Marvel, this didn't Marvel at the boX office.

Disney should just cut their losses and put this on Disney+ as soon as they can.

It'll at least put the movie out of its misery with the embarrassingly dwindling box office returns, especially with Disney no longer reporting numbers. And at this point, people are going to be trained to wait for these movies to show up on streaming services anyway, if they aren't already.

The general public aren't aware what the film is doing in its 3rd to 10th weekend at the boX office, unless they look it up.

Putting it on Disney+ 1 month after its theaterical release, is more bad pr as websites will this pick it up more so than the little millions it is currently doing right now at the boX office. They will not put it out of its misery by dumping it on a streaming service, this quickly. It would reflect badly on film, and long term won't help the upcoming Mcu films, as people would assume if The Marvels comes out 1 month after theatrical release, maybe the rest will? Leading to people skipping on more mcu films in the cinemas.

The Marvels would come out in streaming in February or mid January of 2024. December is way too soon and Marvel Studios should know better that they are not doing it any favor by dumping it through a streaming site, the same streaming site that caused Mcu fatigue in the first place in these last 2 1/2 years.

Hard to believe just how badly this has done. :csad:

Ultimately, I just think the general public just didn't care to see this in the cinemas. We could blame Disney+ and the eXplosion of mcu content in the last 2 and 1/2 years, but the damage has been done. I just hope Disney learns a big lesson from this.

I just think their current slate (3 to 4 Marvel shows for 2024, 4 Marvel films for 2025, 3 Marvel shows for 2025 and Wonder Man still not canceled), will not bring back the viewers anytime soon at the cinemas aside from the big ips like Deadpool, Spider-Man and Avengers. So imo, with the first real sign trouble at the boX office, they should pull the plug right away on some of these projects rather than later, when MCU gets another flop or two. And its too bad, all of these announced projects are still moving forward like as if they didn't have a flop.

Problem is that Sony is still going to keep releasing crap and most of the people I speak to (non-geeks) seem to think it’s all Marvel. So now they will think the years in between are outright terrible!

Yes, Sony with its bad Marvel movies aren't helping. But I think if only phase4/5 movies and shows are as good as phase 3, I think Marvel Studios could counteract the content eXplosion from them and from Sony, and lessen the fatigue.

So now, people didn't just care for The Marvels who doesn't have an A lister like Spider-Man to begin with. I doubt they will care for Fantastic 4, Captain America, Blade and Thunderbolts in less than 2 years - if Deadpool, Madame Web, Echo, Agatha, Venom, Kraven, Daredevil, Ironheart, turn out be mid to bad. I'm confident Madame Web, Kraven and Venom will be terrible. That 2025 line up needs to be changed or we will be seeing lower numbers in 2025.

I think from Disney's side, they really should have considered things in hindsight. I don't know if no one from Marvel/Disney thought their phase 4 and 5 road map, were quite too much and they just eXpected people to buy tickets for every movie and quality control wouldn't suffer. It was impressive that Black Widow, Eternals and Shang-Chi made those numbers when theaters were barely open. Then people really went to see No Way Home, Wakanda Forever, Love/Thunder, Guardians, Madness and even Quantumania.

And then suddenly, The Marvels will not even outgross Quantumania's NA opening weekend and barely hitting $200 million worldwide. If someone told me that 2 years ago, I would have thought there was another pandemic or Marvel Studios released a truly bad film.

Disney can't do anything with Sony, but they have control of what they release. So far, aside from releasing just 1 movie in 2024, I don't confident about how the others will perform. I would hate to see the reboot of F4 and Blade to be delayed again and again only to flop because mcu aren't popular anymore and Disney keep releasing new Marvel shows in Disney+ that aren't even worth it imo.

Just $1.33m this weekend for a total of $82,940,438. It lost 500 theaters this week, down to 1700 now so around $85m domestic still looks to be what it will finish at.
Almost $200m WW now with $199,397,062. I'm sure it has already passed $200m, but overseas grosses aren't being reported anymore.

Interesting. Apparently international grosses are still being reported despite Disney stating they would no longer be reporting them.
Not much coming now, it looks like about $2.9m total for both the week and weekend. I checked individual markets and a number of them (like the U.K. , Spain and Mexico) have totals going through Dec. 10th.

Maybe they really wanted to show it finally passed $200m WW?

WW total is now $202,229,615

Well at least it finally outgrossed Blade II. Making it the closest Marvel film to $100 million mark - not to hit the $100 million mark in North America.

Worldwide, only $200 million is terrible. I'm really curious how Fantastic 4, Blade and Thunderbolts will gross less than 2 years from now if they don't move, or if people aren't into Marvel movies anymore. Those films need like an Endgame boost to perform significantly better than The Marvels at the boX office. Brave New World won't definitely outgross CATFA in North America. Worldwide, unlikely too.

Wipeout. Shame the domestic $100m wasn’t possible at least. The final number is going to be lower than what I would have expected for OW.

Are those from boxofficemojo? Their numbers can't be trusted nowadays, they have wrong information on there all the time. According to the-numbers the movie has barely made over 200M.

Yeah, there often seems to be a discrepancy between those two sites. (Another example: BOMojo currently reports $952M for Oppenheimer; The-Numbers reports $954M.) But it’s generally close — the same ballpark.

As for The Marvels... unfortunately it doesn’t really matter which figure you go with. Neither one is remotely close to breakeven.

Looking at the numbers that Ant-Man 3 and Guardians 3 got in North America, it is shocking how this one didn't even hit $150 million, let alone 9 digits.

I would have thought MCU would first miss the $100 million mark with a really bad movie but this is not even one of the worst Marvel movies ever made. If they gave us their Elektra, Morbius, Dark PhoeniX, Catwoman, okay but not even close.
