Brett Ratner Interview

Oh I've been waiting for this...thanks narrows

*reads*

What exactly should we be keeping an eye out for? Everything in that interview is stuff we have pretty much heard before.

X3 stuff is dispersed throughout the whole thing, it's not continuous. That's all I meant - not to stop reading when another subject comes up since it goes back and forth.

He swears a lot.

Interesting about him and AICN...

ic ... when you said that, it made it sound like there was something in there we have not really heard before that would make us think differently about things .... not too much though.

He seems to think highly of himself. He said he's good at pace....

well at the some moments he is...but at those other moments that need to have a longer pace...he's not. lol

he seems like a pretty "too-self-confident" and "I love myself" kind of guy.
So X3 could be 2:30, but his wonderful sense of pacing and the fact that all the characters got the best emotion made he turn it into a 1:40 summer blockbuster...great.
I say go back to movie school and learn what is "pacing" and "character development". Or then get rid of your "ADD".

I used to love X3, but each news make me like it less...:(

The fact that he loves every frame of every movie of him doesnt please much too. Where is the perfectionism and critical vision if he loves absolutely everything he does? He's right wheen he says he's the one director who is like that...
I think even the best reviews of X3 mention that the movie seems a bit rushed...

Thank you narrows, frankly I needed this, lol

He seems enthusiastic and he was focused on what he wanted--that's cool. And I think too he had a good idea on not reading what we were saying about him... povs can change so much...
But even so... even so... something did not work in the movie. And it's funny, I still don't know what it is. Perhaps the lack of character development was what made it 'unfinished'. Perhaps I was just expecting too much OR perhaps X3 is/was simply a bad movie. Heh.

The scene I’m most proud of, because these are two actors and characters who had never been in an X-Men movie before but they felt like they had, was when Beast goes to see the little boy. Those characters were not in X-Men 1 or 2, but they still felt like they belonged in an X-men movie.
Those are very nice words... but still, 'development' is not in his dictionary. :(

Q: Harry Knowles has come up a couple of times. Have you met him?

Ratner: I might have my facts a little bit off, but I think this is true. You can post this and see if he responds – he probably won’t, because he’s too busy with whatever he’s doing.

I think Harry Knowles is a complete hypocrite. That’s my personal opinion of him, because he’s become a different guy. I met him over the internet in 1996 or 7, when they first started. Somebody told me there was this cool guy doing reviews and I went to check him out. Nobody in Hollywood knew about him. What I’m saying, if my facts are straight, is that Quentin Tarantino was the person who knew and maybe Quentin told me about him.

I don’t remember how I got introduced to Harry. But I started emailing the guy, because I love movies. That’s all I know! I know ****. I started talking to him – ‘Did you see this one,’ ‘Yeah, tell me what you think!’ When I would see a movie I would write in, but he never printed my reviews because I’m a filmmaker.

Q: Did you have anything out yet?

Ratner: This was before Money Talks! I wasn’t even a ****ing feature director. I was a film student basically, doing music videos. I would do these ****ing emails back and forth with the guy and then we would start talking on the phone. And we would talk and talk and talk and talk and talk. For hours and hours and hours. This was before he had any influence, so I had no reason… this guy was my friend. I was the first guy. Nobody talked to this guy, you know what I’m saying?

I got $150,000 to direct Money Talks. I had negative $250,000 in the bank. Do you understand? I had no money. I had no money. I took the only money I had left and flew him and his fat ****ing father to ****ing LA. Him and his fat ****ing father to LA for the premiere of Money Talks. The first ****ing time Harry Knowles was in LA…

Q: And you flew him out there.

Ratner: I flew him out there. I brought him to LA. Now he might say, ‘Not true! In 1996 I blah blah,’ maybe Robert Rodriguez flew him to the set of El Mariachi, I don’t know. All I know is I remember putting him in the ****ing Mondrian Hotel, him and his father. I got a limousine to ****ing drive his ass to my premiere for no other reason than I liked talking movies with this guy and I wanted to know what he thought.

Now if I recall – it wasn’t like he said, ‘I love this movie, you’re an amazing filmmaker,’ I don’t know if those words were said, but he wrote a whole rave review for Money Talks. I don’t remember if I brought him out for Rush Hour, but I know one thing, and you can do the research and look in the archives – the review on Rush Hour was even ****ing better. The biggest blow job you ever read in your ****ing life. Because he really liked it. I was not the hack I am today.

Then I did Family Man. I don’t remember if it was good or bad, but I wasn’t angry with him because I was still his friend. I would never have gotten into it. Then one day I got a call and they wanted to hire me for Superman. I call up Harry and say, ‘Guess what, I’m doing Superman!’ And he was like [gasps]. I was like, ‘Why are you so shocked?’ ‘I don’t know, I just duhduhduh, duhduhduh.’

HOLY ****! Go Ratner!

I'm just glad he has the balls to say whatever he wants!

Wait a minute. This makes no sense. What the hell is he trying to say??? That's like saying "if you haven't arrived, you're not there yet!!!"

NightCrawler was not in X1 but he felt like he belonged in an X-men movie too!!!

On the other hand, Angel was never in an X-men movie either but he definitely felt like he didn't belong, or wasn't wanted in X3!

BTW, Leech and the actor playing him didn't have much to do, or am I the only one that noticed?

i got what he meant, but if he said he made Beast and Kitty belong to X-men movies it would fit more. Those are two characters portrayed really good. Indeed, Leech and Angel have pretty much nothing to do.

Yeah. You don't make someone BELONG in a movie just by putting them in there. Certainly Kitty Pryde came to her own in X3 and actually had a reasonably fleshed out role as well as contributing to the team with her quick thinking and feisty wits. To put Leech above her? Who is Ratner kidding? Is his ADD kicking in again and he forgot what his own movie is about?

Q: Please tell me you don’t read the TalkBacks.

Ratner: I don’t. But they tell me. I don’t read any of this ****. But Tom Rothman reads every ****ing word.

But apparently he doesn't listen:rolleyes:

had Zak and Simon there to keep me honest to the comic book fans, because they’re the major comic book fans

Im sorry!!! Im in fits of laughter at this comment!!!!

for sure. Why to read us if he doesnt follow anything? Just stop reading, its a waste of time, Mr. Rothman. Or then, start using your neurones and listen to, not everyone, because there are some seriously crazy ideas in these forums, but some people really are worth taking a time to follow.
