Brett Ratner Interview

I liked the film, but I think Brett needed some perfectionism. He just seems to shoot something and say "WOAH HOLY CRAP, that was awesome - i'm sooo good."

I didn't know that he changed the whole Golden Gate Bridge thing. Using it in the middle of the movie to break a lot of mutants out of Alcatraz does seem kind of smarter than moving it so they can get their army to alcatraz, but I do like that the battle was on the island.

What's so wrong with having the war at Washington D.C?

I agree. But I think they thought the bridge scene was too dramatic for the middle of the movie, and also there was a lack of time for all the Washington stuff (another location, etc etc)....

The lack of time did prevent some things... that's Fox's fault for not allowing enough time for the movie to be done to its full potential.

Brett does have tons of energy and enthusiasm - and from what the cast said about shooting scenes dozens of times, he's fairly fussy about getting the shots right. What was lacking was attention to detail in places (which might be the writers' fault) and also a bit of subtlety and breathing space (definitely Brett's doing).

What's been obvious about all the X-movies is that - despite being excellent, entertaining films - the people involved do not have a strong enough connection to the source material. Singer proved this again with SR.
Whereas Spider-Man and Batman Begins are much more representative of the comicbook characters, X-Men has missed the mark in several places in all three films.

i dont know, i think X3 was missing class. The first scene of X-men is something of Oscar winner movies, even the first Rogue scene is so subtle, i'd say even cute despite terrifing. Magneto in that first shot of him, with the hat, the plastic prison in the end, i dont know, the film really knew how to be elegant, good looking. You can see the actors in full potential. (though Famke and Ian were best in X3 imo)
I think thats the best description, X1 and X2 were classy, elegant movies, while X3 was a nice blockbuster...X3 fell in a common place...
i kinda missed a "rainy night", a beautiful shot, a good Photography. The first movies were full of scenes with great designs, locations that actually helped building the tone of the movie.
Now we got Elektra forest, fake-looking trucks...of course the School and X-men basis still looked nice, because, well...
also, an example of great filming in X3 is the very first scene, really elegant, but hell, it was Mathew Vaugnn's idea...

Remember the team's disgust in X1 at the idea of experimenting on mutants? Well guess what's happening to Leech? They're keeping him locked up in a lab against his will, while they milk him to produce their Cure.

Now, I agree they didn't do much to explain the background of his character...but he didn't seem like a prisoner in the sense that he was being held hostage. He had toys and video games in his room, and seemed to be treated well. Definitely not locked up in the way Wolverine was.

As far as the interview...wow, he really loves his movies, doesn't he?
