Brooklyn's Finest Casts Up
Cheadle, Gere, Hawke join ensemble cop thriller. And New Jack City 2 news.
by Brian Linder

US, March 27, 2008 - Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, and Ellen Barkin are set to join the cast of Brooklyn's Finest, an ensemble crime thriller which will be directed by Antoine Fuqua.

The script, according to The Hollywood Reporter, was penned by Michael Martin, a Staten Island tollbooth worker who wrote the screenplay while he was in physical therapy after a car accident.

"I had never written a screenplay before," Martin told THR. "I thought, 'How hard can it be?' I was more like, 'If I win this, I can get a new car.'"

The script attracted the attention of Thunder Road executive Mary Viola who was looking for someone to write a direct-to-DVD sequel to New Jack City for Warner Premiere.

The story, THR says, tells three intertwining stories involving Brooklyn cops.

Martin, who is now working as a construction flagger in the subway system, is writing the script for New Jack City 2 on the side.

New Jack City 2?!?!?! Aw, HELL NAW!!!! Are they really gonna do this?!?!

His first screenplay has attached quite a nice cast. And another New Jack City? :o Dear god - no!

Dude must be one hell of a writer if they got two projects from him.
Car accidents make you more productive. :testimonial:

Not bad, simple...gritty.
NYC Cops are hot. Every time I go up there I'm amazed. I can't even watch where I'm going. :meow:

No worries, this wouldn't be the first flick with well known ppl to end up DTDVD

I have a strange feeling that this will be very good. Can't beat the excellence that is Don Cheadle.

Aggggggghhhhh Gotham! you changed your avvy. :(

Cool to see some pics from this, Hawke is an underrated talent imo.

There were tons before, but I can't seem to find them :(

I know. :D

I'll switch back to The Joker one day, but it's time for something new. Do not fear, I'm still Gotham: Defender of the Night! Or Gotham: Defender of Nothing... and a little dorky.

I there's a few new pictures there.

Finally,
Snipes in a proper movie role, and not another DTV!

maybe he has stopped with the DTV's, lets hope so,
he's wasting himself on those low budget movies.

With Hawke, Cheadle and Gere, this movie is definitely theatrical,
and with Fuqua directing, this is shaping up to be a good one!

I like Fuqua's work - Shooter and Training Day were both good. Still haven't seen Bait or Tears of the Sun (are they worth a look?)

This should be pretty good if this guy can be consistent

Tears is worth a look. Not as good as Shooter and Training Day.

I'm a huge Fuqua fan, he's carrying the fire when it comes to gritty, hard ass, R-rated, guy movies. Plus Shooter's action scenes where great compared to that shaky badly edited crap you'd get from Greengrass.

Spill.com talked about the screening of Brooklyn's Finest at Sundance this weekend.

Apparently it's pretty good.

Brooklyn's Finest was screened recently at the Venice film festival and Euro News was on hand to see it.After a hilarious moment at the Men Who Stare at Goats press conference :-)woot:) some brief clips from the film are shown in the video report which includes a snippet of the director talking about some of the troubles he faced during filming.

Apparently it has been reedited since it first screened at Sundance earlier this year.
