You may not like it , but you can't ignore that Inception was critically and financially successful.

Never said it wasn't Critically successful
Never said it wasn't Financially successful
Never said I didn't like it.

I said and let me paraphrase for clarity, the Matrix was successful 'where' Inception wasn't. That should make at least some sense to some.

Then again the anti nolan agenda isn't for all ears.

This article is interesting, hard to completely agree, but everyone's entitled to their opinion. Nolan was listed as number one in case anyone is wondering.

I'll give you that though I should have clarified. I said small and to the point. By that that I meant no clever layer of backwards plotting or dream worlds to distract the audience. Sorry but I find Insomnia pretty boring for it's genre. It's almost like that's what happens when Nolan is stripped down.

Much of Nolans acclaim seems to steam from bells and whistles rather than the substance.

Hmm , there's nothing wrong not following basic structure in cinema. That's what Nolan does , and i think that's where is charm comes from , his elegance to construct elaborate form. But this is nothing new. Storytelling since its dawn has been playing with that. We can go back to D.W Griffith (1916 !!) showing those skills. Nolan likes to play with space and time , in a very inelastic medium . It's a way to overcome the restrictions of cinema. If we add up he has been working on the american system , his achievements are even more considerable.

And the plotting dont make his movies. They accentuate the story.

Its kinda strange criticizing something by nothing being standard...in a industry that all it does it replicate itself. Im glad he's different. He isn't inventing anything , he simply has great awareness to the tools of story telling.

And I agree. Nolan deserves his own thread.

Why just Nolan?

Why not a "directors" sub section?

Why haven't we seen Kevin smith direct a crime drama?

Or Tarantino a scifi film? Or scorcese?

Really hope that Guy Pearce, Michael Caine (didn't he basically say he was in it already though), Ellen Page, Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy return. Maybe add someone like Benedict Cumberbatch, Javier Bardem, Jessica Chastain or Joel Edgerton as well.

Yes to these!

I'm wondering if Nolan will eventually go with the trend and cast Mark Strong in one of his films. :oldrazz:

Anne as female hero lead imo! We all know how much Nolan is inspired by Ridley Scott and Alien. With his first space film, I wouldn't rule out him trying a female lead for the first time.

And with Spielberg's Robopocalypse on hold now for the foreseeable future... Anne has some free time. Perhaps Nolan will snap her up again.

That was an incredibly pretentious article all the way around and reminds me why I think the "Internet" has ruined the word overrated. He lists ten great filmmakers and points out all of them have made bad movies and then pats himself on the back for being superior than the plebs who read his stuff. It is self-aggrandizing crap that cherry picks entire filmographies.

As for the point on Nolan, he is right the people who say he is the next Kubrick are dumb. However, Nolan is delving into blockbuster and popular cinema in a way Kubrick quit doing after Spartacus. But the tone basically is that if you make mass entertaining movies for general audiences, they will always be inferior and are intellectually limited. It is a narrow view of cinema and the kind of snobbery that I have been pointing out this whole thread. Be careful of the smug Internet trends. All I will say.

That article...:barf:

There is so little self-awareness there it's not even funny. And also, the idea that Inception isn't about anything is utter garbage. Books don't get written about films that don't have big ideas in them.

I love The Matrix (a fan of the whole trilogy actually), but the idea that The Matrix is a "smarter" movie than Inception? Nah. It's more outwardly philosophical, but to say Inception is just deceivingly complex and lacking substance really grinds my gears. What's great about Inception is it's very much like a mirror. It can be about a lot of things depending on how you view it.

Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway could very well get picked up again.

I'd like to see Nolan work with more minority actors too. Why no Ibris Elba, Edgar Ramirez, Freida Pinto, Javier Bardem, Li Gong, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Gael García Bernal, etc Nolan?

Please no. I like Afleck but I want more visually dynamic directors for that job. Snyder would be decent. The Wachowsky siblings would be ideal.

Oh man let the Wachowskis make interesting projects , instead of condemning them to fluffy superhero group movies. I know they need a hit , but....

It might not be an artistic challenge, but their cinematic talents would be incredibly utilized in a film like JLA; plus, as you said, they need a hit so Hollywood would actually fund their more artistic endeavors.

Absolutely. It would be incredible visually (something i expected to see this summer , instead i got that visual trash) but i hope they are able to have another hit with something a little bit more of their own. Its one movie , then sequels , then they spend too much time in those things.

Wb wants a big check . They dont need particularly talented people to do that with a property of supe's and bat.
