C. Nolan's Interstellar

Before the Matrix was inspired by Ghost in the Shell, Ghost in the Shell was inspired by Blade Runner.

Paraphrasing Oshii "When you create a film dealing with humans and cyborgs, you have no choice but to refer back to Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, as this movie is probably the foundation of movies with this theme"...so yeah its kinda impossible to escape from some similarities to BR aesthetics.

But , although Shirow usually doesn't give a lot of interviews its very clear the influence of Neuromancer in his work . That's a book that shares a lot with Gits ,and the granddaddy of cyberpunk vast networks theme.

And speaking about Gibson's book , i also think Inception has a lot of similarities to some of its structure (the lost love in the meta-consciousness , the job he needs to take , armitage role's , he needs to avoid the merge of two entities , assembling the team , etc).

Yeah while the aesthetic of Ghost in the Shell may go back to Blade Runner, the characters and the story are far more similar to Gibson's work in terms of archetypes and tropes and things.

That's what I theorized as well but someone (Chris) is telling Wally how to frame the shot which leads me to believe C. Nolan has very well seen the film. That's the smoking gun for me.

Regardless I love when anime cross pollinates with work from western directors that I like. Would it be cool if Satoshi Kon got more credit in the vain of Aronofsky crediting him for major inspiration from Perfect Blue for Black Swan? Absolutely but hey at least anime is being recognized one way or another.

Now I'm just hoping Jonah saw Steins; Gate and convinced Chris to use elements from that for Interstellar. The funny thing is that the main character resembles Joseph Gordon Levitt uncannily so there's a start. :funny:

Like I said before I don't think Nolan usually has problems admitting his influences but seeing as this is anime he may fear some sort of artistic backlash from some of his peers. Understandable but so unfortunate at the same time.

He also borrowed a few ideas from Last Year at Marienbad.

Basically every story has already been told. If we think we're doing something original we're actually subconsciously cribbing it from something we've read or seen in the past. Ideas in general come from **** you've heard of or seen, it's impossible for them not to be.

I'd love it if Nolan goes against typical "hero's journey" stories and seriously makes us root for a "bad guy".

I think when it comes to conventional storytelling, there's like 7 or 8 narratives that get used again and again for movies and such.

True, and I love both movies. I do think Ghost in the Shell takes one story element as presented in BR (androids and what it means to be human) and goes in a different direction with that.

Or Inception for that matter.

And Memento. In fact I'd say the only time Nolan's done that is with The Dark Knight Trilogy, but he was even able to twist it around a bit with that.

Or Memento even.

EDIT: CURSE YOU, HAPPY JACK! I WILL MAKE SURE YOU ARE NO LONGER SO HAPPY FOR STEALING MY EXAMPLE!

As has been pointed out though, Paprika's influence amounted to a lot more than that though with fairly specific shots.

Exactly. This instance can't simply just be brushed off with "Well all stories are the same". These are specific visuals that are essentially shot by shot identical.

Nolan's strength is with the villains IMO. That's probably why The Prestige is so brilliant for me because both leads have their touches of villainy.

Read that again!

LOL.

While having done bad things I don't view Angiers or Leonard as purely malicious characters. They become morally corrupted due to their obsessions (beating Borden or "finding John G.").

Hmm it was probably a dumb thing to suggest. It's hard to find the words for what I'm imagining. I guess it'd be different in that we'd know the character is a bad one from the start, rather than realizing it at the end.

Anyway, sorry for the derail.

I'm interested to find out if this is going to be in the mold of 2001 as opposed to a more action based sci fi.

I don't know if I agree with this.

The only extremely memorable Nolan villain for me is Ledger's Joker.
