World Cable fom the Future?

Hey I use to love watching the 90's x-men cartoon as a kid, but i've just started watching the show in order (re-runs on tv) and i've seen like the first 6 episodes of the show and in like the 2 or 3rd episode they show Cable. But they dont mention anything about him being from the future or anything. They mention that he was in the military i think. But the bad guys in the episode knew who he was.

So was cable at first not ment to be from the future? He still had all the cool future guns and stuff but is there any back store to Cables introduction to X-men?

In Comics : Cable was always meant to be from the future, though originally he was intended to be a future version of Cannonball, before eventually being declared Scotts kid.

In the cartoon : I don't see why they would change this, don't remember the specifics but I do remember a few episodes in where he was in the future. Im guessing they always intended him to have the same storyline in the cartoon as well.
