Cameron's "Avatar"

i think htey are hyping the CGI to much.
he said that we see now level 1 and in 2009 we will get level 20.

And that is a problem because.....
I don't think it's hype if it isn't that far from the truth. Cameron himself has said in interviews ( click back a few pages) that right now the image quality is comparable to the grahics of 80's game.
WHen the movie is released he's confident enough to claim photorealism.

Of course we are the ones the judge to realism but the fact that both Spielberg and Pete Jackson are interested in his technology supports his claim.
My guess is that one of the main reasons why Spielberg and Jackson are interested in this technology is because of their Tin Tin movie(s).
They have said that they will make the Tin Tin Movies animated but the level of realism is photoreal. And WETA is gonna be responsible for the animation.

With Avatar WETA was the VFX studio that collaborates with James Cameron . It's Cameron's technology that they're using. Cameron says that he can achieve photorealism and said that SPielberg and Jackson were interested and have visited the set to get a hands on impression.
Fast forward a couple of months later and they make an announcement of the animated Tin Tin Movies with photoreal characters.
Coicidence.....
I think not :cwink:

WETA is in close second...

they just havent had their chance to shine... except lotr..

Is WETA going to best ILM?

Nope. And it's not that they're not delivering good work. WETA delivers excellent work. It's just that ILM has their history as a truly groundbreaking award winning VFX studio and no matter how good WETA will get they'll never reach that status that ILM has.

It's like saying will Alfonso Cuaron ever be better then Steven Spielberg.
Both can get amazing performances out of their actors and especially the kid actors , both truly know how to use VFX to draw the audience into a movie.
Yet Spielberg is a league of his own and so is Cuaron.

WETA will get loads of awards. But ILM will always will have it's history and impact in movies and that is something unique for ILM.

After seeing wha ILM did with TF I have no doubts who will get Oscar Award for VFX :)

Imagine how awesome Transformers would have been if they used Cameron's High Definition twin lense camera's with photo realism CGI in 3D? :wow:

Too awesome for words... :word:

Nah, theatrical version was enough for me :D

when Cameron told everyone that he was gonna do a 3d movie i couldn't help but think how much of a perfect candidate for a 3d movie Transformers would've been. hopefully, they'll make the sequel in 3d...

...anywho, it just occured to me one HUGE advantage of 3d movies (besides the effect of course) is that the movies won't be bumped from the theaters in 3 months like they've been doing. there's no home video format for 3d so it can stay in theaters longer.

cameron is one of the best when it comes to CGI. but they did the same with spidermen 3 and superman returns .they should stop saying that it will look realistic. make a movie and show it to the world. when people will wonder how they did it and if people will ask themelf how did the actor do this( davy jones was not an actor) then they made something groundbreaking.

and cameron will do groundbreaking effects no doubt about this.
level 1 and level 20 is IMO to much. if he gets level 10 he did something groundbreaking for the next 5 years.

If Cameron shows some footage of them and we assume they're actors in makeup and suits but in reality they're fully CG, that's when you know he's done it.

Raimi and Singer nowhere near Cameron though. Cameron has had over 20 years experience working with the best of the special effects industry. i like to refer to Aliens for his ability to pull off believable effects. there were shots in there that honestly fooled me until i watched the making of. Cameron is a man that delivers on his promises. he said he'd make Aliens work and did. his work ethic has gotten him the reputation of being a hardass director to work with because he wants nothing but perfection from the people he works with.

i still have my doubts but if ILM can pull off Davy Jones then i don't see why James Cameron wouldn't be able to push Weta to pull off 100% photorealistic cgi images.

Felt the same when I watched some of the visual effects breakdowns on the Collector's Edition of Titanic.

Ubisoft and Fox Team for Avatar Game
Source: Ubisoft
July 24, 2007

Ubisoft announced today that it will develop and publish the video game based on Twentieth Century Fox's Avatar, the upcoming feature film written and directed by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker James Cameron, whose previous films include Titanic, True Lies, The Abyss, Aliens, The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Avatar is the story of an ex-Marine who finds himself thrust into hostilities on an alien planet filled with exotic life forms. As an Avatar, a human mind in an alien body, he finds himself torn between two worlds, in a desperate fight for his own survival and that of the indigenous people. More than ten years in the making, Avatar marks Cameron's return to feature directing since helming 1997's Titanic, the highest grossing film of all time and winner of eleven Oscars® including Best Picture. The Avatar cast includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver. Academy Award-winning visual effects house, WETA Digital, renowned for its work in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and King Kong, will incorporate new intuitive CGI technologies to transform the environments and characters into photorealistic 3D imagery that will transport the audience into the alien world rich with imaginative vistas, creatures and characters.

"Ubisoft is excited to partner with 20th Century Fox and James Cameron on this important project. 'Avatar's' rich scenario, onscreen action and special effects will provide a wealth of inspiration to create a unique interactive experience," said Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer of Ubisoft. "True to their reputation, Ubisoft's creative teams are looking forward to recreating Cameron's high definition 3D environment in a compelling game for film and game fans."

James Cameron commented: "For the movie 'Avatar' we are creating a world rich in character, detail, conflict and cultural depth. It has the raw material for a game that the more demanding gamers of today will want to get their hands on -- one that is rich in visuals and ideas, and challenging in play. I told the Ubisoft team I wanted them to be free to do their very best work, and not think of this as a movie-based game. They responded with a fully realized presentation which captured the soul of the world and the characters, while promising to be a knockout game on its own terms. Their passion inspired my confidence that they are going to do something transcendental."

Elie Dekel, Executive Vice President of Fox Licensing and Merchandising added: "James Cameron's 'Avatar' will re-define the movie-going experience forever. Cameron's vision and innovative approach to film-making demand that we align this breakthrough project with the most talented and creative partners in the world. As we embark on the incredible journey that is 'Avatar,' we are thrilled to be collaborating with Ubisoft on the development of the video game. After an extensive review, it became clear the talented Ubisoft team is uniquely able to bring Cameron's vision into the interactive realm."

The game is expected to release in conjunction with the movie's planned opening in May 2009.

So is this going in the same direction as Beowulf when it comes to CGI?

Anyway, a few years ago I went to Universal Studios and saw Terminator 3D: B.A.T. which Cameron directed. It was awesome. I love 3D movies when it's IMAX and you get the black glasses. But normal red and blue glasses 3D just flat out sucks. It would suck if this movie is shown in red and blue 3D instead of IMAX.(because the problem is, there's not many IMAX theaters in the world)

slightly. Beowulf is 100% cg and is supposed to look like older fantasy paintings (ala Conan). Avatar is totally original with a whole world that they have to create including totally original plant and animal life.

Avatar DEFINITELY won't be using the red and blue glasses. hell, even Superman Returns did away with those. Cameron's trying to develop stereoscopic 3d technology so powerful you won't need glasses at all. whether that'll be the case with Avatar remains to be seen but at the most you'll be wearing clear glasses.

With WETA and Cameron showing faith in photorealism technologies, I have high hopes.

I'll leave it at that.

if its anything like the T23d ride.. ill be fine

Same. Thanks for the info DF

I'm definitely excited about this movie. Creating an entire world, new language, new species, and even new plants and such. Wow, this is gonna be cooler than Middle Earth

So Cameron's claiming he's hit photorealism for this flick?

^^^

That's the same what Zemeckis said about his Beowulf, which now looks like video game :(

As great as they look in Beowulf, put them next to a pic of a real person and you can still see the difference.

Cameron's Avatar will feature the photorealistic world, the photoreal aliens, design, etc, but I doubt the humans will be. Anyway, from what I've read, the humans will be live action anyway.
