Iron Man 2 Can Iron Man 2 Beat it's Predecessor

I just fear that they might have too many characters that could hurt this film. Whiplash, War Machine introduced, Black Widow and that whole thing with her and Tony and Pepper, and Hammer. Hopefully it's all cohesive.

I wouldn't worry about that.
I have a feeling that Hammer is going to be a rather one-dimensional bad guy.
I'm also pretty sure that they can handle Black Widow quite easily. I don't think things will get too serious between her and Tony. They might give her some background and the rest is just eye-candy. She's that bad ass chick with some heroic qualities. And that's it.

So the large number of characters doesn't bother me because they don't have to flesh them all out and only a minimum amount of character development is required.

War Machine is just a suit. They've already introduced the character of Rhodes.

I think it will beat the original's 3rd act easily thanks to War Machine but it will be tough to beat the 1st act. It was pretty strong in Iron Man.

I loved the origin story in IM1, but the final fight was a bit generic for me...

I hope IM2 is better than the first movie... and goes on to become the best comic book movie ever. :)

Of course until Batman 3 comes around....

The first Iron Man was very successful and people hailed it as one of the best comic book movies to date, along with The Dark Knight. Do you think Iron Man 2 has enough fun in store to be as good as the first, or even better? Just wondering what you all think :im:

In terms of finances. Yes it will beat the one first one. If ROTF can beat the first movie BO gross then IM2 can do that too.
But if you're talking about storylines and critical performances , yeah that is a different area.
Before TDK came out Iron Man was hailed as the best comic book movie . And for a good reason. The characters in the movie were compelling, the movie was fun , the action . Hell to this day i can't understand why critics and fans considered Spider-man 2 to be the best comic-book movie ever with a whiny Peter parker , rain drops keep falling on my head song which made me puke and to top it off MJ running in her wedding dres to peter.
Iron Man had none of that and it was fun AND well acted . But the reason why movies like TDK are considered to be better is that the mature take on what happens with the character. The hero girlfriend is blown to pieces , one of his best allies is face if horribly burnt and we get to see that. And to top it if we have a psychotic anarchist whose antics push the movie towards the R rating.

Obviously we don't need to see such extreme things in IM2 but as long as the story is compelling enough and the actors continue to act well , then i don't see any problems why IM2 wouldn't be better then IM1.
Look at the Potter movies. Each movie gets darker but they are still fun. And each movie continues to get high scores amongst critics.

Well, I'm one of those fans who considers Spider-Man 2 to be better than TDK. I also think that IM2 will simply continue the formula IM1 started and surpass TDK as well. I genuinely wonder if the Nolanites that literally worship at his alter will try and create a backlash or canned hatred of IM2 in order to defend their religion? Most fans won't care but I know a few will attack or even go to the film looking to bash it. It's human nature.

^You damn well know that's gonna happen. ;)

I would be very surprised if this movie was better than TDK
I would be VERY surprised if any future Iron Man movie directed by favrau was better than any of the nolan Batman films.
Iron Man was a fun summer action film but it is in no way near amazing.

I think IM2 already looks like it has much more potential and i want to say "flavor" then the bland first one. The cast looks like its going to make it a much more exquisite experience.

However I don't think it will top BB or TDK in any way, as those movies have darker and heavier complexity. I mean faverau is a good director but look at his non-superhero films as opposed to Nolan's, Nolan isn't always fun but he definitely like dealing with heavier themes. Faverau has a good way of making things fun and cool though so this film will be a blast, and possibly more enjoyable than TDK to the general public. But I think that stating that Faverau is a better film maker than Nolan is a bit premature.

To me(and a lot of other people) heavy themes do not make a movie better. Often quite the contrary. I go to movies for fun. That's all. They are incapable of being more than that, IMO. ANY MOVIE.

I know IM2 isn't meant to be deep and thought provoking that TDK was. This is completely different and shouldn't be compared. So saying it could best TDK is ridiculous. Both are completely different things. IM was great because it was smart and fun and light, and showed it didn't need to be dark and deep like TDK. Just well made. I'm hope they can deliver with that again.

Agreed. I think they have already done that as I think the villains in the second film will be far more interesting. Warmonger didn't really seem like a challenge to Tony.

You mean Iron Monger.
I thought Jeff Bridges was absolutely superb as Stane. He and McKellens Magneto are my favourite Marvel movie villains to date.
I'm sure Rourke and Rockwell will deliver but in my opinion Bridges really nailed the character. Obviously the character was written as a one-dimensional power-hungry tycoon. But Bridges was so enjoyable and I even liked the much-maligned final fight between Stane and Stark. I thought the fight had some great moments.

I liked the final battle, but I wish it was a bit longer. and that is my ONLY complaint about the 1st iron man

It'll probably make a bit more money, but I'm dubious as to whether it'll do better with the critics. I'm looking forward to it but I'll be frank, nothing I've seen so far has wowed me, and the RDJ factor is no longer a novelty that the movie can trade on its own with.

Great action set pieces (somthing the last movie arguably lacked) and decent characterizations beyond Stark, and it should be a success equal or better than the first.

Seriously? No movie can be more than 'fun'? You might as well say that of all art. And you'd be mistaken.

lmao, I disagree, War Machine isn't the deciding factor if this one beats it's predecessor or not.

Sustitute 'fun' for 'entertaining'. I probably should have put it that way instead. And in that respect I believe I am not mistaken. Movies that try to 'teach' is what I have a problem with. All these hollywood d-bags are out of their league trying stuff like that.

Yeah, what were the likes of Kubrick thinking...

Whatever it was, it managed to put me to sleep.

I think it will....

I am very hopeful Rorke brings a gritty kinda feel to this that will have people so on the edge....

From the Trailer, you kind of get that sense.

The problem i had with the final fight in IM1 was Pepper's involvement and it looks like
she'll be in IM2's final fight as well. Seriously, what the hell is she doing going with Shield agents to arrest Whiplash?

I also didnt like how Monger's size and immense invulnerability didnt allow for a good fight. IM only punched him once and it didnt phase him. Just imagine Bumblebee vs Megatron. Bee wont be able to fight melee without getting tossed around.

That's why i like the Hammer drones in IM2. Not because they re fragile (too fragile perhaps?), but because they are about IM's size and he can actually fight them, punch them, grab them. Whippy is gonna get an armour at the end of the movie, so i just hope he is not another invulnerable mechanical giant that Tony can only defeat with some deus ex machina. I want to see melee + ranged weapons + gadgets + flight + crashing through buildings.

Iron Man 2 could be just the film for you then! :cwink:

I jest, I jest, I'm sure it'll be good harmless fun. At least it isn't Transformers 2.

After reading the spoilers, unfortunately I do not think that there is a huge chance that the sequel will be better than the first Ironman movie. Imho, there is seemingly too much bullcrap that will hurt the movie.
