After Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’s monstrous 5-day domestic box office take of $201.2 million, Dreamworks/Paramount is going to want to fast track a third film into production and strike while the iron is hot. But will Bay hold up the big giant robots return to the big screen?

The studio has announced a July 1st 2011 release date for another sequel, but Michael Bay has been saying that he wants to make a smaller film before returning to the big robot action. And a Summer 2011 release date would mean that he would need to begin development within a couple months, and would have no break.

Screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have their plates full already. They are working on Cowboys and Aliens, and have promised Paramount a draft of Star Trek 2 by Christmas. But the Transformers scribes have already publicly said that they aren’t necessarily interested in returning for a third film. And some might argue that it would be best for the project if Kurtzman and Orci were not being involved in a third film. Opinions of Orci and Kurtzman aside, it’s worth noting that the writer’s strike is more likely to blame for the subpar screenplay for Revenge of the Fallen.

It seems more likely that Bay will move ahead with his self-described “small Pulp Fiction-like project”, Pain & Gain, which tells the true story of a couple of Florida steroid-abusing knucklehead bodybuilders who become criminals involved in an extortion ring and a a kidnapping plot that goes horribly awry [read more info about that project here]. The project actually sounds like a nice departure for Bay, a film which is more character development than explosions (actually, from what I hear, there is no explosions, only a car crash).

But who knows, Paramount might be able to offer Bay a deal he can’t refuse. But since Bay already makes an estimated 8% on Transformers movie toys, and a good percentage on the back end (enough to make Bay $80 million on the first film, and the sequel is on track to make at least 50% more than than original).

Rushing a director is never a good thing, I think they should push it to 2012 ATLEAST and tie it in with one of the 2012 prophecies that could work in transformer lore. I say let him do is own thing and if they really want to push for '11 then give the project to Spielberg or wait it out. Nothing and I mean NOTHING will come from rushing the next movie...bunch of money hungry mofos...

I don't think so. He seems pretty determined to get his year off. I think that for the sake of keeping him on board, Paramount pushed TF3 back to 2012.

Either way, it'll be cool. Transformers is one of the best movie franchises yet.

I think that two years is a very short period of time for a movie of this magnitude. Even though i would like a new one every month, i think i would rather wait one more year (total of 3) for a better third movie.

I think it would pay off if they took their time. Bay tried to fill a thousand robots in this, he also tried to make the scale bigger by using the Fallen and Devastator and he ended up underusing and nerfing them. A well thought, balanced third movie can only come if the writers have time to work on the plot and of course if Spielberg holds Bay's leash.

I'd rather if they didnt introduce a bigger god this time to go one up from ROTF, but if they focused on the civil war, both on Cybertron (when it began) and now on earth with an event that would tie those two time settings. No more magic gizmos, no more explosions for the sake of it. I'd rather they did some good storytelling for a change.

And that takes time. Oh and btw, can somebody please tell me why Orci and Kurtzman are in business? What the hell?

Orci and Kurtzman are the writers on the two biggest movies of the summer so far... why do you think they're still in the business, genius?

Give Bay his break. Let him try his little character driven Movie, hopefully he'll learn from it.

Because ROTF was weak in everything that concerned the writers and ST wasnt anything special..... Genius....

I can't comment on Star Trek, but ROTF suffers from a very weak script.

That doesn't prove whether or not the script is any good. It only proves that people like giant robots and hot chicks.

It proves it isn't utter garbage like some people say.

But let's get back on thread.

They cater the writing style to whoever the director is. This is what writers do. They couldn't give Bay a script they'd write for Abrams, and vice versa. It's not rocket science.
