Honestly, I think the way they should do the Thing is emphasize that, once the Fantastic Four are public and known? He's *not*, by and large, "feared by normal people". Sure, he's a giant rock monster, but he's got a likable personality and celebrity fame. The average person's reaction isn't to scream in terror, its to snap pictures or maybe ask for an autograph. This would then contrast with Ben's *own* view on his status, with his mixed and changing balance of contentment and dissatisfaction ( note that even if he's well liked, there's still an element of "gawking at the freak", which would make Ben uncomfortable on a bad day ).
Basically, play him up as an allegory for how fame works for somebody who has legitimate troubles in their life, but is stuck in the public eye no matter what they do.
