Karen Gillan To Topline ABC Comedy Pilot ‘Selfie’, Julie Anne Robinson To Direct

Doctor Who‘s Karen Gillan has been cast as the lead in ABC/Warner Bros. TV single-camera comedy pilot Selfie. Julie Anne Robinson is set to direct the pilot from Suburgatory creator/executive producer Emily Kapnek. It centers on Eliza Dooley (Gillan), a self-obsessed, twentysomething who is more concerned with “likes” than being liked. After suffering a very public and humiliating breakup, she becomes the subject of a viral video and suddenly has more social media “followers” than she ever imagined — but for all the wrong reasons. She enlists the help of a marketing expert at her company to help repair her tarnished image. Scotland native Gillan, best known for her role as Amy Pond on the long-running British sci-fi drama Doctor Who, recently recurred on the Adult Swim comedy NTSF:SD:SUV. Repped by UTA and Troika, she next stars in the features Guardians Of The Galaxy and Oculus. Robinson, repped by UTA, 3 Arts and UK’s Independent Talent Group, has directed multiple episodes of Kapnek’s current ABC/WBTV comedy series Suburgatory. She also helmed the pilots of two ABC comedy series, The Middle, produced by WBTV, and How To Live With Your Parents.

Smash alumna Debra Messing is back at NBC as the lead of another hourlong project, pilot The Mysteries Of Laura, lifting the project’s cast-contingency. Messing is set for the title role in the pilot, written by Jeff Rake and directed by McG. Based on the popular Spanish series Los Misterios De Laura, The Mysteries Of Laura follows the life and relationships of Laura Diamond (Messing), a female homicide detective who can handle murderous criminals — but not her hell-raising twin children. Warner Bros. TV, Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Prods. and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment produce. Production on the pilot and the series will be moved to New York where Messing is based. Messing is making her Broadway debut in John Patrick Shanley’s play Outside Mullingar and will segue to Mysteries Of Laura after wrapping her well received stage run. The Mysteries Of Laura extends Messing’s long history at NBC where she became a household name with her Emmy-winning starring role on comedy Will & Grace. Lee Daniels’ The Butler co-star Terrence Howard is reuniting with the movie’s director Daniels and writer Danny Strong, this time on TV. Howard is set as the lead in Empire, Fox’s drama pilot from Strong, Daniels and Imagine’s Brian Grazer. Written by Strong and to be directed by Daniels, Empire is described as a unique family drama set in the world of a hip-hop empire. It centers on Lucious Lyon (Howard), a charismatic, savvy music superstar who is about to take his company, Empire Entertainment, public. Raised on the streets, he has never backed away from a fight and will resort to any measures, fair or foul, to defend his beloved Empire. 20th Century Fox TV and studio-based Imagine TV are producing, with Strong, Daniels, Grazer and Francie Calfo executive producing. Empire, which is geared toward series per Fox’s new development model, extends Howard’s relationship with the network where he co-stars on the upcoming event series Wayward Pines. EXCLUSIVE: Happy Endings alumna Elisha Cuthbert is taking on another comedy with Happy in the title. After fielding multiple offers, Cuthbert has been tapped as the female lead opposite Nick Zano in NBC’s multi-camera pilot One Big Happy, from Warner Bros. TV and Ellen DeGeneres’ A Very Good Production. The project reunites Cuthbert and Zano who had a recurring role on Happy Endings. Written by Liz Feldman and directed by Scott Ellis, One Big Happy centers on two platonic friends since childhood, a lesbian, Lizzy (Cuthbert), and her straight male best friend, Luke (Zano) who have been living together and have been trying to have a baby via artificial insemination for some time. They finally get pregnant — just as Luke meets and impulsively marries the love of his life. Feldman is exec producing with DeGeneres and Jeff Kleeman.
Cuthbert is part of the much sought after Happy Endings cast this pilot season. She is the latest to be scooped up, joining Eliza Coupe, Casey Wilson and Zachary Knighton, with Adam Pally and Damon Wayans Jr. still in play. Cuthbert, who rose to fame with her role as Jack Bauer’s daughter Kim on 24, is repped by ICM Partners and John Carrabino Management.
‘Revenge’s Barry Sloane To Star In ABC Drama Pilot ‘The Visitors’

Aiden is on the move. Revenge star Barry Sloane being cast as the male lead in ABC alien drama pilot The Visitors, from Amblin TV. It chronicles the race against the clock to defeat an unseen alien enemy out to destroy the world. Sloane will play Wes, a former FBI agent now with the Special Projects Division of the Defense department who investigates military threats that are better off solved outside the public’s knowledge. The Visitors is for the same network and hails from the same studio, ABC Studios, as Revenge, where Sloane has been recurring since the beginning of Season 2, regular since midway through the seasons season. Sloane received the blessing of Revenge‘s producers to do a pilot this season. The fate of his character, Aiden, is kept under wraps.
Ventimiglia, repped by CAA, Management 360 and attorney Jeff Frankel, will play John Doe/Drew, who is covered in strange tattoos and diagrams and speaks in a strange language.

Krysten Ritter, who toplined NBC’s comedy pilot Assistance last season, is back as the star of another NBC/Universal TV half-hour pilot. Ritter is finalizing a deal to topline in Mission Control, from executive producers Adam McKay and Will Ferrell and writer David Hornsby. Ritter also will serve as a producer on the project, said to be in the tone of Anchorman. The workplace ensemble is set in 1962 and examines what happens when a strong woman (Ritter) butts heads with a macho astronaut in the race to land on the moon. In addition to being pursued for pilots, this season Ritter also developed and sold projects under a first-look deal with Uni TV. Ritter, repped by WME, Sanders Armstrong Caserta Management, and Bloom Hergott, recently appeared in Tim Burton’s Big Eyes and will next be seen in the Veronica Mars film, reprising her role from the series.
Morena Baccarin To Star In ABC’s ‘Warriors’

Hot off a three-season run on Homeland, which earned her an Emmy nomination, Morena Baccarin has been tapped as the female lead in another drama project that deals with war veterans, ABC’s medical pilot Warriors, from writer Chris Keyser, Mandeville TV and ABC Studios. Inspired by the Walter Reed Military Medical Center, Warriors follow the best and brightest active-duty military doctors and nurses as they practice trailblazing medicine. Baccarin, repped by UTA, Seven Summits and Jackoway Tyerman, will play Tory, a psychiatrist and expert on PTSD who suffers a mild case herself having just returned from Afghanistan. This marks Baccarin’s return to ABC, where she starred on the sci-fi drama series V.

It centers on Dr. Henry Morgan (Gruffudd), New York City’s star medical examiner. But what no one knows is Henry studies the dead for a reason – he is immortal. His investigative work with Detective Jo Martinez and relationship with best friend Abe (Judd Hirsch) will peel back the layers of Henry’s colorful and long life. Pilot Scoop: Ugly Betty Alum Becki Newton Lands Starring Role in Fox Comedy Weird Loners
Ugly Betty vet Becki Newton is heading back to Fox as one of the stars of Weird Loners, a half-hour comedy pilot about four relationship-phobic people who are unexpectedly thrust into one another’s lives in a townhouse in Queens, NY, TVLine has learned.
Newton, who starred in last season’s short-lived Fox comedy The Goodwin Games, will play Caryn Goldfarb, a smart, attractive, high-strung, dental hygienist who is a pushover where handsome, charming men are concerned, but who always comes on too strong and fast for any relationship to last.
As we reported earlier this month, one of the other four loners will be played by Happy Endings‘ Zachary Knighton.
King of Queens scribe Michael Weithorn penned the script.
