Syfy Developing ‘Pax Romana’ Miniseries, ‘The Magicians’ Series
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

EXCLUSIVE: Ahead of its upfront presentation today, Syfy has put in development Pax Romana, a miniseries based on the graphic novel by Jonathan Hickman, and The Magicians, a drama series based on Lev Grossman’s popular fantasy novels. Pax Romana is being adapted by writers Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia (Warehouse 13) and Circle of Confusion, while The Magicians hails from former Supernatural showrunner Sera Gamble, John McNamara (In Plain Sight) and producer Michael London. Both projects are set at Universal Cable Prods.

Based on Hickman’s comic book limited series published in 2007, Pax Romana is about a Special Forces team that travels back in time to Ancient Rome on the eve of World War III to “fix” the future by altering the past. Roman legions battle modern day attack helicopters, tanks and soldier as the leaders of the expedition fight over their vision for civilization. David Alpert of Circle of Confusion (The Walking Dead), Federman and Scaia executive produce, Hickman co-executive produces. Federman, Scaia and Circle of Confusion are repped by CAA.

Based on Grossman’s books, described as Harry Potter for grown-ups, Magicians follows a group of twentysomethings in New York who study magic and discover that the magical fantasy world they read about as children is real and poses a grave danger to Earth. Gamble and McNamara will write the script and executive produce with London. London had optioned Grossman’s first novel after it was published in 2009 and originally set it up at Fox in 2011 with different writers. A sequel novel, The Magician King, was published in 2011.

Syfy has been ramping up its original slate with recent pickups of The Expanse, Ascension and 12 Monkeys, renewal of Helix, as another recently ordered series, Dominion, is set to premiere soon.
Definitely intrigued by The Magicians. I haven't gotten around to reading them myself, but I've read alot about them. I could see it almost being for the fantasy genre what Being Human was for supernatural/horror TV. It's not so much "Hey, we have to save the world" stuff (though, yes, there's a bit of that), but more bad **** happening as a result of the characters' own personal crap and they suffer for it and have to clean up their own mess. And I like Sera Gamble too. Her time as showrunner on Supernatural wasn't great, but she was fantastic at writing individual episodes, even during those two seasons she was running, so hopefully having the benefit of adapting material that's already there yields better results.

^^^^ Both of those sound like they have potential.

Bumped their respective threads on it but might as well mention it here too, Crisis and Believe both failed to make it through their seasons.

A crisis at NBC can fully be believed now:

The network has yanked two new dramas off its schedule.

With both shows struggling in the ratings, NBC has pulled Crisis and Believe from its lineup, effective May 18, the final Sunday of May Sweeps.

A Woman of Saturday Night Live special will air in their place.

Never watched Crisis. Watched a few episodes of Believe before I got so bored with it I never bothered to return. No big loss either way, IMO.

Hope the girl from Believe finds work, though. She came off very mature for her age.

I wanted to watch Crisis but felt it would get cancelled so never bothered. Rachel Taylor just can not catch a break. This is what? Her 3rd show that has been cancelled. She should've stayed on Greys.

Perhaps the cancellation of Crisis frees Lance Gross to play Luke Cage?

According to her IMDB profile, yep. Three in a row. She's becoming the Taylor Kitsch of television.

She needs to hop on board an established show.

Kevin McKidd did that. I think he had two shows before he jumped into Grey's Anatomy, where he's been for six seasons.

It's a shame to, because Charlie Angels could've gotten good and 999/666 Street or whatever it was called was getting really interesting. She always finds her self around top talent.

Wow. I didn't realize he'd been there for six years.

I thought Christian Slater was the king of cancelled TV shows
He has compeition.

Maybe Fox can give the Believe girl a role on Gotham

Fox Picks Up Hip-Hop Drama Pilot ‘Empire’ To Series
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

I hear Fox has added another new drama to its slate for next season, picking up to series Empire, its drama pilot from Lee Daniels, Danny Strong and Imagine’s Brian Grazer. Written by Strong and directed by Daniels, Empire is described as a unique family drama set in the world of a hip-hop empire. It centers on Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard), a charismatic, savvy music superstar who is about to take his company, Empire Entertainment, public. Raised on the streets, he has never backed away from a fight and will resort to any measures, fair or foul, to defend his beloved Empire. Henson plays Cookie Lyon, Lucious’ ex-wife and former business partner. Taraji P. Henson co-stars. 20th Century Fox TV and studio-based Imagine TV are producing, with Strong, Daniels, Grazer and Francie Calfo executive producing. Empire’s order follows the pickup yesterday of Batman prequel Gotham. Word is that there may be more pickups at Fox today so stay tuned.

that's too bad. Believe never really had a shot with that night & time slot.

NBC also has some home improvement show on before those two. Sadly they have to wait through the dreck of Summer before football season returns.

UPDATE: Fox has made it 3-for-3, picking up all three of its drama pilots with a series order to Red Band Society starring Octavia Spencer, from Amblin TV and ABC Studios. I hear there have been talks for Fox to come on board as co-producer. The adaptation of the acclaimed Spanish hospital series Polseres Vermelles was written by Margaret Nagle. Red Band Society, which has been a favorite staffing choice for writers this season, is a coming-of-age drama with humor set at a big-city hospital. It explores with dark humor the daily life of a group of teenage kids living in a hospital who become unlikely friends. Nagle is exec producing with Amblin’s Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank as well as Sergio Aguero; Carlos and Julio Fernandez of Filmax co-executive produce. The newly picked up Fox drama series Red Band Society, Empire and Gotham join previously ordered Backstrom and Hieroglyph. On the comedy side, Sober Companion and Cabot College have been garnering buzz, with Dead Boss a possibility.

Glad to see Magicians still around. I knew it was optioned a while ago, but never heard anything beyond that. There's plenty of room for expansion, since the first book covers a long period of time (the characters full time at the school plus a year or so after), so they might be able to get a few seasons out of that alone. Hope they don't go too crazy faithful with the characters as they can be completely unlikable at times, hell most of the time, with how self centered they can be, but it could be interesting drama.

NBC Picks Up Comedy ‘Marry Me’ To Series
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

After three drama pickups for Fox, NBC started its series ordering campaign with a nod to its hottest pilot, Marry Me. It marks the return to primetime of Happy Endings creator David Caspe, who wrote the pilot, directed by Seth Gordon and produced by Sony TV and Jamie Tarses’ studio-based FanFare Prods. The semi-autobiographical project stars Caspe’s real-life fiancee and Happy Endings Casey Wilson. Six years ago, Annie (Wilson) and Jake (Ken Marino,) bonded over their mutual love of nachos and they’ve been inseparable ever since. Now, after returning from a romantic two-week island vacation, Jake’s all set to pop the question. Before he can ask, though, Annie lets loose on Jake for his inability to commit. Not wanting to spend the next 60 years talking about that mess of a proposal, Jake and Annie decide to hold off on the engagement until they can do it right. Yet if history tells us anything, it’s when we really want things to go right that they all tend to go wrong. The only thing we know for sure is these two are destined to be together whether they can get it together or not The cast also includes Sarah Wright, John Gemberling, Tymberlee Hill and Tim Meadows. Caspe and Gordon executive producer with Tarses.

Casey Wilson + Creator of Happy Endings = Thank you, NBC.

2nd UPDATE 5:20 PM: Another hot NBC pilot getting a series pickup, the Katherine Heigl-starring drama State of Affairs. The project is in need of a showrunner as Alexi Hawley, who wrote the original script, has left, and Joe Carnahan, who is getting high marks for rewriting and directing the pilot, is busy with The Blacklist. I hear Tom Szentgyorgyi is eyed for the job if The Mentalist is not renewed. Each day the president is faced with hundreds of life and death decisions, and to prioritize the biggest international crises facing the country, one top CIA analyst – Charleston Tucker (Heigl) – assembles the president’s Daily Briefing (PDB). Aside from the political minefields she has to walk, Charlie has a close personal relationship with the president (Alfre Woodard) because she was once engaged to her son before a tragic terrorist attack took his life. Charlie survived that attack and is now determined to bring the perpetrators to justice. The cast also includes Adam Kaufman, Sheila Vand, Cliff Chamberlain, Tommy Savas and Leslie Odom, Jr. Writer-director Carnahan serves as executive producer with Katherine Heigl, Nancy Heigl, Robert Simonds, Sophie Watts, Henry Crumpton, Rodney Faraon and Julia Franz. State of Affairs is a production of Universal Television, Bob Simonds Company and Abishag Prods.

UPDATE: After picking up its hottest comedy pilot, Marry Me, NBC also ordered to series its drama pilot frontrunner, Allegiance (form. Coercion). It was adapted from Israeli series The Gordin Cell by writer George Nolfi who also directed the pilot. I hear John Zinman and Patrick Massett are in talks to join as showrunners. Allegiance centers on Alex O’Connor, a young idealistic CIA analyst specializing in Russian affairs, who learns a shocking secret that his parents, Mark (Scott Cohen) and Katya (Hope Davis) are covert Russian spies deactivated decades ago. Today the Kremlin has re-enlisted them into service as they plan a terrorist operation inside the U.S. border that will bring America to its knees. The cast also includes Margarita Levieva, Gavin Stenhouse, Morgan Spector, Annie Ilonzeh, Alexandra Peters and Kenneth Choi. Nolfi serves as executive producer with Avi Nir, Ron Leshem, Amit Cohen, Yona Wisenthal and Giyora Yahalom for Universal Television, Keshet Media Group, which is behind the original series; along with Israeli satcaster YES, which airs it.

RIP Tomorrow People, Star Crossed, Dracula, and most of what i like on NBC.

Getting to a point where I watch cable shows and only thing I watch on Network are day time soaps...I'm a hell of a catch there, in that 18-49 w--Male demo.

She needs to hop on board an established show.

Kevin McKidd did that. I think he had two shows before he jumped into Grey's Anatomy, where he's been for six seasons.

Heh, that's funny, because she was actually on Grey's for several eps as a character who could easily have stuck around before she got Charlie's Angels.

State of Affairs would interest me if it had a different actress in the lead role. Allegiance sounds interesting.

Never watched Crisis. Watched a few episodes of Believe before I got so bored with it I never bothered to return. No big loss either way, IMO.

Hope the girl from Believe finds work, though. She came off very mature for her age.

If they'd focused on the main plot the show could have been a decent mini series, but the good deed a week format was incredibly dull, shame given the cast.

Yeah, she has a bright future IMO, she carried the show.

Believe was too much like Quantum Leap without Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell to carry it.
