'Tales From the Crypt' Anthology a Go at TNT With "Reinvented" Crypt Keeper
APRIL 14, 2016 12:54pm PT by Lesley Goldberg
The 10-episode series hails from M. Night Shyamalan and will be part of a horror block as the Turner network also adds seasonal anthology pilot 'Time of Death.'

TNT is moving full steam ahead with its Tales From the Crypt horror block.

The Turner-owned network announced Thursday that it has ordered a 10-episode anthology based on Tales From the Crypt as part of the block of programming overseen by M. Night Shyamalan. The cabler also greenlit seasonal anthology pilot Time of Death from IM Global Television and is developing psychological thriller Creatures from Sue Naegle.

First announced in January, Tales From the Crypt will be at the center of the weekly horror block. After uncertainty about if the new series would feature the famed Crypt Keeper from the original EC Comics series, TNT confirmed that its incarnation will indeed feature a "newly reinvented" Crypt Keeper. The horror block is slated to launch in 2017.

As part of the block, TNT has picked up pilot Time of Death — a seasonal anthology produced by IM Global. The drama is described as a season-long horror tale that unfolds in real time — with each episode taking viewers hour-by-hour through a single "long night of hell." Season one will follow a murderous psychopath who returns to his Midwestern hometown during the annual county fair to exact revenge on a community he believes destroyed his life.

Guy Busick (Watch Over Me) and newcomer R. Christopher Murphy will pen the script with Shyamalan and IM Global Television's Mark Stern and IM Global founder Stuart Ford on board to executive produce. Season one will pay tribute to the slasher films of the 1980s with subsequent seasons inspired by the traditions of other horror subgenres.

Additionally, TNT announced that it is developing drama Creatures for the block. The drama, produced by Naegle Ink, is described as a sophisticated psychological thriller that tells the disturbing tale of two former best friends who, at 12 years old, tried to cut out their classmate's heart as a sacrifice to an internet bogeyman they invented called Mr. Gorgi. Fifteen years later, the two young women have been released from a psychiatric institute into their small town in Alaska, but it's not long before they start to feel the alluring and terrifying presence of Gorgi again. BAFTA winner Dominic Mitchell (In the Flesh) will pen the script and exec produce alongside Naegle. Tom Shankland (House of Cards, The Missing) is set to direct and exec produce.

The horror block, curated by Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Fox's Wayward Pines), will feature short- and longform stories. The Tales From the Crypt series is exec produced by Shyamalan and his Blinding Edge Pictures partner Ashwin Rajan. Endgame's James Stern and Aloris Entertainment's John Santilli and Dan McKinnon also exec produce.

For TNT, the news comes as the drama-focused cable network looks to reinvent itself and make noise with edgier fare beyond staples like Rizzoli & Isles, The Last Ship and Major Crimes. Under new topper Kevin Reilly, the cabler has added Chad Hodge's Good Behavior, starring Michele Dockery, mini The Alienist and film-to-TV adaptation Animal Kingdom.

thats pretty ambitious programming

could be ok, or an unmitigated disaster that upon failing will damage the chances of any similar programming getting a chance like that again

Just hope all that isn't on Sunday. They'll never be able to compete with HBO and FX and all that. :(

Despite appearances there is a rumor that Sleepy Hollow is likely to get a fourth season. Castle and CSI: Cyber I think are forked (as in done, put a fork in them) and I have no idea about the other two seeing as I have no interest in them.

If they replace Abbie with some white chick, that will come off very suspect.

This could be the best week of television for the year.

Better Call Saul, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Broad City season finales.

Season premieres of The Night Manager, Inside Amy Schumer, Game of Thrones, Silicon Valley and Veep.

Plus everything else that's still running like The Americans, Underground, The Path...

I doubt that although a few times there I thought maybe Betsy Ross might have been a past life of Abigails. But that appears not to be the case. It was disappointing how little of Ross we got and then they throw everything they built away.

It was also stated whoever soul reincarnates to is going to be connected to the family line somehow which rules out the Ross connection I thought they might be playing at.

WTF is going on? Is TV trying to be the anti movie regime and dusting female leads left and right? That's 3 gone in no time.

To be fair that was her choice. She very nearly didn't come back for this season. The big assumption that Castle will make a comeback (seemingly Sleepy Hollow will so it isn't impossible) then she chose not to re-up her contract. Fillon is contracted but not Katic.

and apparently she and Fillion were butting heads

now Fillion has a very good rep as being super easy to work with, so Im thinking a lot of the conflict may have come from her end

Based on this:

I hear the decision for Katic not to return was made by ABC and ABC Studios. Both Fillion and Katic last spring inked one-year contracts, which are up at the end of the current eighth season. While the studio started making overtures to Fillion for a new deal months ago and has been in on- and off- talks with him since the beginning of the year, I hear Katic was never approached to re-up her contract and was not offered an opportunity to continue on the show. Instead, I hear she, as well as Jones, were informed late last week that for budgetary reasons, they won’t be asked to come back for Season 9.

It wasnt her choice. They basically fired her.

That is true but she also almost did not return last time (as I recall it came down to the wire) and since they are trying to cut the costs on another season and the likelyhood she would demand more money for her return means cutting out the negotiations entirely makes it simpler.

Yeah true. Hopefully she gets another good show pretty soon. I enjoyed her on castle.

The battle for money speaks to the inherent problem though IMO, this continued stupidity of the male lead getting paid more than the female lead needs to end.

This is an ugly situation with ABC and Castle.

Nathan Fillion not returning without Jon Huertas and Seamus Denver
As for the remainder of the cast, sources say that Fillion would not return to Castle without co-stars Jon Huertas (Esposito) and Seamus Denver (Ryan).

It is ending. The ending is an erosion as opposed to a landslide but it's still happening. Of course it would be nice for it to just happen over night but nothing of this magnitude ever does.

That would be a first. A network that started as something returning to its roots successfully. I would almost say SyFy has done that but it never completely left its roots as a science fiction/fantasy network. They have gone much deeper into returning to it but they never abandoned it so heavily as MTV abandoned it's musical roots.

I fear TLC will never be about learning again however. I think Honey Boo-boo and its ilk killed off the brain cells at that network.
